At 166 sq ft, the size of the living/sleeping area in this studio apartment was quite challenging. We made it work by taking careful dimensions of the space as well as every piece of furniture before purchasing. Even the height of the printer mattered as it had to fit between the filing cabinet and the desk. The busy student who lives here had two primary needs: sleeping and studying. Upon completion we felt we met those needs quite well.

HIPPIE STYLE GOES HOLLYWOOD FOR MAYA RUDOLPH

Old showbiz glitz and glamour meet modern fun and funky in this room designed for Maya Rudolph, complete with a small “kids zone” for when her family visited from the West Coast. The small robots contain their own genius and were created by students at The Providence Center, a school for children with unique learning needs.
With thoughtful details like books on successful variety shows, family photos, and a dazzling sequined dress picked just for Maya, this room is a home-away-from-home.
“My favorite things are the collection of vintage mannequin heads showing the changing ideals of female beauty through time, and the hand-carved dressing screen.” - Kyla

Mary Prince Photography // This fully renovated 110 year home is located in downtown Andover. This home was formerly a dorm for Phillips Academy, and unfortunately had been completely stripped of all of its interior molding and details as it was converted to house more students over the years. We took this home down to the exterior masonry block shell, and rebuilt a new home within the existing structure. After rebuilding the original footprint of most of the rooms, we then added all the traditional elements one would have hoped to find inside this magnificent home.

As the right side of the photo hints, the dining area is open with and connected to the kitchen. A large sliding glass patio door brings a surplus of light into the space allowing the black walls to produce a relaxed rather than oppressive feeling. The resident wanted to keep her string lights up for when she hosts small parties.

The owner of this apartment is a graduate student in the field of literature. She had a large book collection for which I mounted a custom shelving system. The headboard is also custom-made and I stained the wood to match that of the bookshelves for a feeling of unity. This bedroom features a large window (not pictured) that lets in a flood of light, allowing the edgy black paint to feel relaxed instead of oppressive. Board and batten on the lower portion of the wall was also a custom job to make the built-in ledges seem more intentional as opposed to an accidental result of the strange in-law floor plan.
