Design ideas for a contemporary backyard landscaping in Salt Lake City.

Clay brick pavers were chosen and installed in a running bond pattern for the walkways. The front walk leads guests to the front door through a stunning perennial garden. The large circular design in the front walk creates a great focal point. A clay brick walk leads guests through a post and beam arbor into the backyard entertaining space. This space includes a post and beam pergola with three posts, circular seating bench and wood burning fire pit that creates an intimate space. Clay brick accents were incorporated in the grill island and large wood burning fireplace and columns. Fire features were integrated into the columns on each side of the fireplace and seat walls. Many outdoor rooms interconnect around this entire “Family Compound,” a back house, and adjourning guest home. There is everything you need to entertain a giant family and to have friends over for a pool party. Some elements include a huge agave orchard with courtyards, an outdoor BBQ kitchen, a vegetable garden with fruit trees, a swimming pool, patios and levels. Concrete stepping stones meander their way thought a private, densely planted garden area. Accents like a wooden bridge over the dry creek bed, a seating bench, and container planting bring this area to life.

The “handrill” of Corten steel follows the peastone and steel steps down a steep slope to pour into a round basin, emptying into a channel that meanders through the narrow back garden at ground level, ending finally in a boulder fountain. Devised to minimize root disturbance for the tall existing pines on the property, the continuous Corten steel structure is supported by concrete tubes rather than a foundation that would have required extensive excavation. It was pretty much a blank area but with some elevation issues. The seating wall served 2 purposes as a seating space but also to retain some of the patio. Natural fieldstone steppers lead from the driveway area to the patio. An assortment of perennials and plantings soften the hardscape project. Serviceberry, hybrid dogwood, and a large dwarf pine are the anchor plants. We also created a raised vegetable garden space off the patio too. Marc Depoto (Hillside Nurseries Inc.)
