COMMON QUESTIONS Q: "Is sustainable design going to cost me more?" Answer: Reality is that upfront costs can sometimes be higher due to labor, high-quality natural materials and ethical manufacturing versus mass-produced "fast furniture. But the trade-off is that you are making an investment in longevity. For example: vintage reclaimed, solid wood furniture can be refinished and will outlast flat-pack pieces that end up in a landfill after a few years. Plus, incorporating energy-efficient lighting and appliances saves money on utility bills in the long run. Q: "What are VOCs, and why do they matter?" Answer: Our design team wrote the book, CLEAN DESIGN: Wellness for your Lifestyle and we have a section devoted to explaining Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which are man-made chemicals used in paints, stains, adhesives that are often endocrine disrupters or cancer-causing carcinogens. We suggest low-to-no VOC paints that do not off-gas and non-formaldehyde adhesives for furniture. Q: "What is allergen-aware design?" Answer: 60 million Americans (1 in 5 people) suffer from asthma or allergies, we work with our clients to guide them regarding flooring, paint, mattresses, linens, insulation, foyer landing spots - to ensure that they are aware of allergic triggers in their living spaces.
