I was struggling to visualize the right design and flow for the remodel of my 1963 rambler when I came across Eric Gedney’s website. His services were clearly outlined and his portfolio immediately gave me confidence. I signed up for his “Are You Stuck?” package, which included a 1.5-hour on-site consultation followed by 1.5 hours of design work to produce a professional schematic. From the start, Eric was personable, thoughtful, and an excellent listener. He really took the time to understand what was important to me and offered smart suggestions that improved the layout while being mindful of my budget. When I received the first version of the drawing, I was honestly blown away. The level of clarity and professionalism exceeded my expectations, and the plan gives me exactly what I need to move forward confidently into the bidding phase with contractors. This process truly got me “unstuck.” I now have clear direction, renewed excitement, and a solid path forward. I would absolutely recommend Eric to anyone needing help refining their vision. Eric was a great architect to hire to design our project, a bonus room addition on our house. His process was excellent from start to finish, and incorporated both his and our ideas in a collaborative way. We were impressed with the fact that our building permit was approved through the County without any ordered revisions, which speaks to Eric's expertise and thoroughness. We would recommend Eric as an architect to anyone who wants a project taken from concept to permit without any worries.

Not a second in our consultation session with Eric was wasted. Eric is sharp, experienced, and easygoing. He recognized a lot of structural details at a glance. One minute, I was talking about some of my interests unintentionally, and within the next five minutes, he had a new design idea incorporating that. We love our new house but hadn’t stopped worrying because the floorplan doesn’t work for us. However, Eric was able to generate brilliant ideas to “tame” the house to our own so quickly that it finally put our minds at ease. Now, I know that meeting with the right architect is not only illuminating but can also be pleasant.

First off, I will say that Eric absolutely knocked it out of the park for our remodel. We have a home in West Seattle and when we had a 2nd kiddo on the way, we decided to convert our attic into livable space. We had an original plan in mind when we came to him - he had so many fantastic ideas and suggestions we would have never considered. We ended up more than doubling the space we would have had originally, and it barely impacted our budget - the whole space ties in so well with our existing home that people can't ever tell it was even added. He walked us through the entire process, answered all of our questions, and even after his part was complete he continued to support and provide advice. I cannot recommend him enough.

We hired Eric to help us with the first step in our home remodel project which was to find out if our ideas were realistic for our budget. Eric provided us with some new suggestions and advice on how to "better spend" our money. We are definitely going to follow his advice.

We have been very fortunate to work with Eric. He rescued our project after we'd engaged another architect that was very expensive, flashy and difficult to communicate with. Eric provided us with an initial consult to generate some ideas for our impending remodel. We were thrilled with what he provided us. We have been working with Eric for the past year on the design and management of the construction of our new home. We are through the primary design phase and waiting on permitting due to the current economic conditions. Eric is a wonderful architect. My husband and I hired him to create a significant remodel design. Our home has a number of different angles and roof lines that were not easy to streamline into the vision we have for our home. Eric was able to create something beyond our expectations. He is a good listener and brought valuable solutions to the table. He was on time and on budget. There were no creeping costs and the cost was not tied to the project budget, but rather a flat rate. We have worked with a few architects on past projects and this was a welcome change for first rate work! Although we are planning this extensive remodel to be completed in the near future, having the comprehensive plan allows us to update flooring and make some minor changes in the short term without spending redundant future costs.

We have used Eric Gedney's 3 hour consultation package. I would highly recommend taking advantage of this package before going into any significant remodeling. We have gained a very thorough understanding of pros and cons of different changes, and suggestions for other changes in the future. It was definitely worth the money.

Eric was a great fit for our full house remodel. He designed a 4 bedroom / 3 bath second story addition with a new kitchen and staircase relocation for our 1940's craftsman NE Seattle home; not a small project :-o Eric listened to all our wants and came up with a thoughtful plan that balanced what we were looking for with an unrelenting eye for design, detail, & flow that preserved the style and integrity of the original home. He took us smoothly through the design phase, permitting process and helped us find a great contractor as well. The 3D model was a great bonus that gave us confidence in the plan and helped us visualize the final product in a way we never could have done from the blueprints alone.

Eric Gedney transformed my 'view with a roof' to a cozy, light filled, awesome 'framed view'. I knew I had my architect when he went silent, stared off into space, and came out with an incredibly simple solution to an awkward layout problem that alluded everyone else. He has a keen diagnostic eye and imaginative vision.

We knew we wanted to add more bedrooms to our house, but didn't know the effort involved. We found Eric on Angie's List and after a quick email and phone call scheduled an appointment. The bad news was what we wanted to do was very expensive, and parts of it might not even be possible. Eric didn't stop there. He dug into what we needed and came up with a solution that made much more sense than our original idea. His solution is far better and far less expensive solution than what we had been assuming. It was a simple solution but on that had evaded us for almost 15 years. We were thrilled with his work and only wish we had a bigger project to see what he could do with something meatier.

Eric went above and beyond in explaining the process initially as well as every step along the way. Throughout the design process he brought excellent ideas and designs and if I suggested changes, he was always good natured in pointing out why it may or may not work and offering alternatives that worked as well or better. His 3D drawings were specifically helpful to me in visualizing the spatial design. Throughout the permit process, he efficiently represented the project regarding the multitude of reports and modifications required by the permit department. All in all, he listens to what you want and works with you to refine the project to meet your dreams. I would highly recommend him and I look forward to working with him again on future projects.

Eric is awesome. He saw potential in our (then) yet-to-be renovated house from 1910 that we couldn't have imagined. We weren't able to secure his services for anything more than a floorplan, and I am still saddened we couldn't have him more involved in the project. (Cost shown is for the floorplans, not the renovation)

I wanted to get an opinion on potential upgrades to improve the flow of the house without too much change in the structurally; being an old house it was remodeled by different times without considering overall layout and design. I asked Eric to share vision of how/what we can remodel which changing the structural element or incurring costs thereof. Eric was just fantastic; he had very creative ways to keep improve the flow of the house without having to completely requiring the overhaul of the structural element of the house. He has provided us with detailed insight that would help think which direction we should head with the remodel plans. We will absolutely hire Eric as we execute on it.

We couldn't have been more pleased with Eric Gedney's work. He designed a beautiful second story for our 100 year old home and the results are amazing. All the details are consistent with the history of the home, the new addition fits in so well it looks as if it was always there. Eric was very easy to work with, always available and on schedule. He made a great team with our general contractor.

Even as a trained marriage counselor I did not think it would ever be possible to find a garage design that my husband and I could agree on. Eric was excellent at listening to both of us and suggesting a design that included both of our desires. Loved how he helped us to think outside the box on our garage-to-Master conversion. We hired Eric to help us with our home remodel. When drawing up the plans, he listened well and solicited our feedback, and he spent a lot of time making sure we were on the same page. My wife and I have moved back into our Snohomish cottage after having rented it out for a decade, and are now planning to add some floor space and a porch, but we were very concerned about doing something in keeping with the character of our home. It's tiny, but to us a gem. Eric put us in contact with a great drafts-person, we got drawings made up, and then we consulted with him. Eric came up with a lot of ideas and suggestions that we had not even considered. He was able to give us 'ball park' estimates of his work and the cost of construction and help us to decide where our money is best spent.

My husband and I hired Eric to remodel our kitchen, master bath and general updates to our 1930 Capitol Hill home in Seattle. We gave Eric a long list of wishes that we'd like to see accomplished in a remodel (thinking that we wouldn't be able to achieve all of them). Eric met our checklist and beyond. We had a major kitchen remodel project and was offered the standard free kitchen layout service from the cabinet distributor. Our kitchen is small, as well as challenging, due to placement of windows and other constraints. The free layout service fell way short of what we needed. We wanted to find an “out of the box” solution that optimized the space and really looked for opportunity, so we hired Eric. He was quickly able to find a work-around, which involved constructing a small buildout into our garage space to help fit our large refrigerator. His guidance was transformative; our kitchen feels so much larger and open. We continue to be complemented by friends and family. Skip the cabinet guy’s advice and call Eric. He’s worth every penny at a fraction of the cost of most kitchen remodels.

We chose Eric for the design of our retirement home and have never regretted it. Eric was thoughtful in his design, listening to us and learning how we live so he could design the home we wanted, not what he wanted. We asked for a home where we could age in place, and he delivered. We asked for a home with clean lines and great architectural detail - he delivered. He was considerate of our budget and we ended up with a superb home. It is comfortable, inviting, and it is us. While I know Eric loves century old homes, we can attest he is also in his element designing a completely new home. We are still in touch with Eric, even though we moved into our home in 2010. Eric Gedney is a brilliant architect. We couldn't be happier with his work, and we have greatly enjoyed working with him over the past year. We interviewed several architects before beginning our project. Eric began the process by coming out to the house, surveying the property, and talking to us in depth about our project. Eric had us complete a survey, walked us through the process of design and build stages and phases, listened carefully to what we wanted, and created a three dimensional visualization of the project. We wanted a modern design with green materials. I was surprised by how well Eric listened to us and how open he was to receiving feedback. He did a great job communicating and accurately set expectations up front about how to balance out requirements of quality, time, and budget for this major project. He recommended a few builders. We assembled bids from some of his contacts and some others. Eric recommended an interior designer, Roshele Allison / NW Home Designers, who is also amazingly talented. We assembled a great team of architect, designer, and builders who knew each other and worked very well together. Eric's taste is magnificent and the lines of our house are exceptionally beautiful. Eric did a great job advocating for us in several situations and making sure we made sensible and aesthetic decisions in all circumstances. He did a beautiful job. I can't say enough good things about Eric's talent, vision, communication competence, and integrity. I feel very fortunate to have worked with him and highly recommend his services to others.

My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Eric on our house design. We had some ideas on how we wanted our house, but couldn't agree on any of the designs we put on paper. Eric has an amazing way of listening to both of us and he is so artistic. He came up with a great design that we both love! His design was full of new ideas and is very beautiful! Our house went through a few design changes and he was very supportive in these modifications. We had some delays in the project due to some unexpected lot issues, but Eric was on time and the bill was estimated very well!

We originally brought Eric in to propose some designs for a remodel of the second floor of our early 1900s home. His designs were clean and made great use of space: Our 3 bedroom (all on second floor) 1 bath (on first floor) house because 3 bedrooms 3 baths, including a very spacious and comfortable master suite. Eric was open to recommendations and ideas, leading to an effective design that really worked for us. Furthermore, his contractor recommendations were very effective. He worked well with the general contractor. He was always on time with plans and permits, which was especially helpful for us as first time remodelers. Although we exceeded our budget, that was not Eric's fault. We decided to do more remodeling than we had originally intended. I think he did a good job of designing for our budget. Note that we made most of the interior design choices ourselves, relying on Eric primarily for space design and structural usage, so we can't comment on his interior design skills. This is not a complaint, just a disclosure. We've been living in the remodeled space for a few years now and are really happy with the results -- it'll be really tough to find a new home with a master suite as nice as the one we have now.

Eric planned the remodel of our front entry, powder room, and master bath. It included adding 80 sqft that had been outside of our house previously. We have a 1960s Ralph Anderson house that has a very distinct style. We wanted the remodel to look like it could have been part of the original house. Eric did a great job listening to our wants and concerns. The space feels very gracious and flows well with the rest of the house. I was really happy with all the storage I got out of a space that had almost none before. We will definitely work with Eric again.

I am a residential designer and finding an architect who not only understands design integrity AND budgets is hard to find. Eric is the perfect combination of this and constantly comes up with structural design and details solutions. He keeps his client's in the know and knows how to work smart! His projects range from additions to whole house remodels. His plans are detailed and even show a 3-D renderings of the house from the outside to framing details. They are easy to read and he is quite successful at fast turn around for permits. If you live in the greater Seattle area and need an architect, look no further! Bottom line: as a contractor who has worked with many architects Eric Gedney is one of the best I've worked with. Here's why: 1) Eric places the highest priority on serving his clients needs first. He has nothing to prove and no ego that needs constant stroking. 2) Eric is highly personable and is a great listener - he also has a wry sense of humor that makes his projects fun to be a part of. He works hard to establish a good connection with his clients and has an amazing ability to translate client wishes - even odd ones - into build-able reality. 3) Eric understands the importance of collaboration and team building and seeks to build the team early in the process. Contractors can easily be marginalized in this relationship and its not uncommon for them to be made the "bad guy" especially as costs grow with design. Eric listens and even defers to contractor input and will revise his plans to accommodate. 4) Eric has a great sense of design, scale, proportion, balance, flow and style which of course is important in an architect. But Eric also possesses a clear understanding of "real life played out in a space". Nothing frivolous, rather, there is a purpose for everything even if the purpose is just to create a deeply personal statement which sums up the clients taste and style. Further, nothing Eric does is run-of-the-mill everything is custom tailored to support the clients desires. 5) Finally, Eric can design to meet budget requirements and even though compromise may hurt he is able to scale a project down to help it get built (he is also happy to scale it up!). This is a very important trait in an architect as many projects in our industry die after design and clients are left with a really nice project that will never be built. A final word of advice to potential clients: when Eric suggests you choose your contractor early on in the process - do it! This is the best way to ensure your project hits your budget goals and building the team early pays off in many remarkable ways.
