About Us

Established in 2014, Kerry McHugh Design is owned by Kerry McHugh Upton of Olympia. Kerry was part of a family owned retail home furniture store in the Olympia area, McHugh's Ken Schoenfeld Furniture for 25+ years. After the closure of the store in late 2010, Kerry continued to work with her clients that she had established over the years. In 2014 she went full time with her business. Her ability to work with her clients, making their house their home has built her business from referrals of her clients. The scope of her projects have been complete home renovations, master bath renovations, window treatments, reupholstery, floor coverings, small commercial projects and second homes including ski cabins. Kerry is a Professional member of the Interior Design Society (IDS). She was certified by the Council of Qualification of Residential Interior Designers (CQRID) in 1994. She has served on the boards of the Next Generation (NHFA), Junior League of Olympia, Providence St Peter Christmas Forest and the Olympia Downtown Association. She has designed several home interiors for the OMB Tour of Homes through the years, wining first place for several of them. Kerry has been a member of IDS for many years but in 2016 she submitted her first project for review by the design community. She received 2016 Designer of the Year Award for Universal Design, First Place. Her client required a home that was wheelchair accessible throughout the whole home. She is able to wheel into her shower room, wheel through her "walk-in" closet and wheel out to her patio to enjoy the view. Check it out on Houzz! I moved into my new home 3 years ago, and Kerry has been a joy to work with. She is creative, responsive, professional and trustworthy and has great ideas for all my projects, big and small. She recently guided me through purchasing new bedroom furniture and replacing indoor and outdoor lighting. Since the pandemic has made in-person shopping more difficult, her knowledge of quality products and suppliers made this process manageable and fun. Thanks to Kerry, my home is a happy place.

Our newly purchased "second" home became our main residence and needed some updating. Kerry came to the home and listened carefully to my concerns, requests, and ideas. We were on somewhat of a limited budget and the house presented challenges with differing floor height and three different hardwoods. We wanted the existing glassed in fiberglass shower converted to a tiled curbless shower. She presented several options for selection in products to be purchased in curtains, carpet, and tiles and bathroom hardware. Everything she did was done keeping in mind, costs, practical application & appearance. She made sure all selections were to my liking and was a great communicator whether via phone or email. The contractor she used for the master bath renovation was the best we've known of from both our own prior experiences and that of friends. I highly recommend Quincy Home.

Kerry was wonderful and professional to work with and had good design ideas for the unique space. She worked hard to find the right doors, cabinets, lighting fixtures etc, in keeping with the feel of the home remodel. She was prompt and always made herself available! She was attentive to detail and was able to work well with everyone. She had good ideas and lots of patience! I think I gained a friend in the process which is nice to say at the end of a long project!

Kerry and Quincy Home provide great ideas and suggestions while being conscientious of time line and budget. The Packwood remodel was not intended to be so extensive as to require all new kitchen cabinetry, but given the unexpected need, Kerry came up with options that were financially reasonable with the same great aesthetic used throughout the cabin. Can't say enough about the value provided by Quincy Home on our two projects. This is the second project we have completed with Quincy Home and the 4th interior Designer we have worked with over the last 20 years

Kerry assisted us in the design and remodeling of a house that had great bones and location, but that did not align well with our style or needs. She was awesome! She was very quick to understand our objectives and was instrumental in helping us to select nearly every design element in the house, including flooring, rugs, countertops, tile, window treatments, paint colors, fixtures and furniture. She has excellent project management skills and a deep network of suppliers and subcontractors. She is a collaborative designer - not the kind who tries to impose her ideas on you - any time we needed to select something, she’d do the legwork to sort down to a handful of reasonable choices then we’d pick. She saved us countless hours. She was mindful of budget and did not push crazy expensive stuff on us. With her advance work we selected furniture for the whole house in 2 hours flat - including fabrics. She also worked extremely well with the contractor and was able to handle decisions on many of the inevitable things that come up in a remodel with a quick phone call or an executive decision. Kerry earned our complete trust on this project. Not only does she have great design skills, but she also is detail-oriented, thorough, punctual and follows through on her commitments. Our house looks awesome and works great because of Kerry!

I don't usually write reviews, but I really felt like I needed to for how much help Kerry provided when we purchased our house. I was a bit overwhelmed when I started looking for interior designers and when I talked with Kerry she made it a point that she understood where my wife and I were coming from and we were looking for someone who would be able to take their time to understand what our needs were. She did just that. We were trying to furnish and create a look for our living room and basement. Kerry was professional, on-time for every meeting, and was not in a rush to have us looking for items unless we were ready. As I said above we are new to this whole process and we wanted her to help us make decisions that would be based on our chosen style, and budget. I'd recommend Kerry to anyone who needs help in making a room come alive with color and style. She definitely knows how to take your thoughts and make them come to life.

Kerry is absolutely wonderful! Her experience, knowledge, and expertise in home interior design allowed my husband and I to create the home of our dreams! She took the time to get exactly what we wanted by doing her own research and went shopping with us for furniture and decor. She was considerate of our budget and met our deadline. Kerry is such a friendly and down to earth person and made the process easy. She even helped me hang my decor on the wall as I'm currently pregnant and my husband was out of town!! We will be using Kerry in the future for sure. :-)

I have fabricated all of her window treatments, bedcoverings pillows, cushions etc. for 20 plus years. Which also has included projects for homes, commercial spaces as well as private yachts. She is easy to work with and listens to her clients needs and wants. With an outcome that is perfect for the client not a cookie cutter approach. Goes above and beyond to make sure all needs are met. Kerry is and outstanding designer and very honest, with the results being what was discussed upon.

Because I have MS and require adaptation to my living space I have relied on Kerry Upton to manage my interior design. Her suggestions and management of our remodel included wide doors and hallways throughout our home, attention to special needs in the shower and for the sink, and floors which extend onto our deck that accommodate my wheelchair. She designed a closet that I can access with my wheelchair. She designed a special nook with a full length mirror that stores my chair. The kitchen allows me to move around it easily. The end result is stunning.
