Lunada Bay Tile

When I saw the samples in a store, I thought they were just so beautiful. It met my niche for what I needed perfectly. Do not, and I cannot say this loud enough! DO NOT purchase any product from Luna Bay Tile. My Installer has 20+ years of installing almost any kind of tile or glass. He pulled it from the box and he said to me immediately do not use this product. Even after it was installed, and we looked at all the cracked delicate glass, one by four pieces of oxygen. He replaced 16 pieces and he needs to come back and replace three more pieces before we can seal the product according to the installment information. All I saw was a beautiful backsplash in my kitchen, and I didn’t check the reviews. I hope you will do better than I did. Oh by the way, I ordered five samples and the samples were backed on white paper also misleading the purchaser. Do your homework read the reviews it’s been an expensive mistake.

After seeing the Agate Lucca Pearl on Pinterest I fell in love with the tile, but got discouraged after reading some of the reviews on here. I decided to look at the Sonoma Vihara series instead, which is beautiful, but ultimately wasn’t right for us. Back to the Lucca it was, and I contacted LBT for a retailer near me. After looking at their sample boards I was sure the Lucca was my tile. I was made aware that there would be variations, and that not all the edges were going to be perfectly smooth with this type of tile. We worked closely with LBT explaining exactly what I hoped for, which in my case was a good mix of light and mid-tone greens and blues. LBT were very helpful and responsive, and in the end our backsplash, which we DIYed, turned out beautifully. Most of the tiles had perfect edges too; within the 19 square feet we used were maybe 15 irregular tiles. Some of them we exchanged from the overage we got, others we just left. The reason I didn’t put up a photo here is that no matter what I try the colors don’t come out anywhere near the reality of how beautiful the tile is. The photos on Pinterest and on the LBT website are of more use.

As a 40 plus year distributor of mid to high end tiles in San Jose, we’ve always been very particular with the vendors we showcase. My goal was to have top quality lines with great dealer support that would produce long term partnerships. Lunada Bay turned out to be a perfect fit. The transformation of the line from its early humble days to becoming a complete & innovative product collection that our homeowner, designer and contractor customers love has been remarkable. New product are continuously released, and the availability is better than any glass line we’ve handled. While I’ve been in the industry for a long time, it’s nice to be able to contact their technical service department when something unusual is requested, especially on the many larger pool and fountain projects we do. It’s really become our go-to glass line. The bottom line is that Lunada Bay offers the products my clients want, the sales I’m looking for, delivered in a timely manner which makes us look good to our customers. My worst experience EVER with a manufacturer. The tile bought from this company cracked immediately after installation. To add to that, the company absolutely denied any responsibility and blamed everyone else - installer, designer, the weather, cleaning products - they tried everything they could to weasel out of taking responsibility for their defective product. Installer says he will never work with them again. Truly awful.

Buyer beware, if you have any issues with Lunada Bay tile, you're on your own, they will do absolutely nothing whatsoever to help you. They have a disclaimer on their website & samples: "Samples and photos provided are representative, but may not indicate all variations of these characteristics." This is the last sentence of their short paragraph disclaimer. Essentially, if you order blue tile but receive brown tile, too bad so sad. I am a high-end interior designer in business for 40+ years. I have rarely had issues with materials during that time. However, whenever there was an issue, the reps always fixed the problem. Lunada Bay is another story! They are a "high-end" tile company but claim no responsibility whatsoever & refuse to provide any compensation whatsoever. Note the difference between the sample pictured below & the tile received. We ordered blue tile (based on the sample) and received lots of brown with some blue tile! The rep basically said she was not obligated to do anything to help us due to the disclaimer. We called corporate & they said the same. We have now had to buy replacement tile for our client at our own expense & refund the client for the Lunada Bay tile.

Horrible customer service. Horrible QC of their products. Buyer beware - the product is full of cracks, chips, sharp shards of glass. They consider these defects to be part of the beauty of their product - however none of the photos on their website show this supposed “beauty”. They are unwilling to replace it - they told us to buy more so we can pick around the damaged tile. We bought from a reputable tile shop and thought they would only carry quality products - I was wrong. This business has a 1 star rating on Google - wish we had done more research before ordering.

We used a designer to help us select tile, and the tile we selected was Lunada Bay Tile .5x1/1x4 Tresse Natural Indium Tozen. We have had three reputable, very experienced tile installers attempt to install this tile. There are several problems with this product. First, there is no coating on the back, so the trowel lines show through. The recommended installation calls for "back butter" method. The problem with this is that if you back-butter the tile section (12x12), the "butter" doesn't simply remain on the back, but oozes into the grout lines requiring a ton of work (and expense) to remedy. If you back butter each tile individually (tile pieces less than 1x1, it is VERY time-consuming and expensive. Additionally, back-buttering each piece individually results in a "blob" look from the front ... so not only is it noticeable and not attractive, it is very costly. Instructions that come with the tiles seem to attempt to remedy the limitations of this Chinese-made product by suggesting that you can "shimmy" the tiles back and forth to blend the grout lines from the back. We attempted this, but found the following issues ... first, because the back of the tile is not smooth, shimmying the tiles tends to force the permaflex into the tile cavities and results in having the tile high points that touch the greenboard backing not having enough permaflex to get a good adhesion. Also, in attempting to get the trowel lines out, the greenboard began showing through the clear tiles in spots. Here's my biggest gripe ... if the tiles would have simply been coated with a white backing, as many other tiles like this are, there would be no issue and no special instructions, no excessive installation cost, no customer frustration and dissatisfaction, no re-work, etc. So rather than adding a little bit of cost to these already fairly costly tiles, the manufacturer saved a little cost at the expense of quality. I would have paid a little more and had none of the headache. The funny thing is that the manufacturer knows the problem exists because their instructions point out remedies to the results of the flaws ... this is like telling a boat customer that the boat may leak a little, but that's not a flaw ... just bring along a bucket. I wouldn't buy that boat, and if I would've known in advance of the installation problems, I certainly would not have purchased this product. One of the reasons I have taken the time to write this review is that I hope the manufacturer fixes this problem. My guess is that the manufacturer would otherwise never hear of this issue ... not sure who is going to pick up the cost of this ... the renovation contractor, the decorator, the tile store/retailer ... but my guess is that no one will return the tile (much of which ended up in black plastic garbage bags) to the manufacturer where the root of the problem lies. We have used Lunada Bay glass tile in several projects and our clients are always pleased with the added texture, color and liveliness that it gives to a master or guest bath. Our midwestern clients appreciate more subtle designs, but Lunada Bay tile makes great accent features that add so much interest.
