Maughan Design & Remodel

We worked with Maughan Design to remodel / update our kitchen from top to bottom last summer. (This included lighting, cabinets, counters, backsplash, painting, and flooring.) Working with Kathie and her team of professionals was a delight. We truly appreciated the way they took the time to listen to us and get to know us beyond just what our budget was for the project. The construction process was smooth and efficient. There were no big surprises, and the budget actually came out to be a little under what we had arranged. Throughout the process, we had regular check-ins from Kathie and her team. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results, even after living with our kitchen for almost a year now. If you are planning a remodel project and want actual design services (vs. “go to the showroom and pick what you like”) and a company that will listen to you, complete quality work, and make the entire process enjoyable and stress-free, we highly recommend Maughan Design!

My husband and I were referred to Maughan Design & Remodel (MDI) by two different long-time friends who had worked with Kathie Maughan Francis to remodel portions of their homes. We, too, are completely satisfied with the results of our remodel and with our experience working with MDI. In starting out, the two of us had varied and often conflicting opinions about what should be done to upgrade our kitchen and family room. To her credit, Kathie is skilled in harmonizing diverse perspectives into cohesive, practical designs. She was patient and positive about various possibilities. She listens well and has excellent communication skills as well as exceptional design skills. She came up with creative solutions for us, and her excellent eye for color pleased us both. Kathie directly employs a design team and a field team, and she uses tried-and-true subcontractors for some aspects of each job. In our case, subs were used for plumbing, electrical, and fireplace tile-setting. Everyone who came to our house was professional, respectful, trustworthy, and highly skilled. The workers took care to minimize dust and dirt on the floors. They left our house in good shape and clean at the end of each day, including the bathroom they used. They worked quietly and efficiently with no blaring music and no smoking. They were careful in arming and disarming our security system when we were traveling. Everyone exhibited attention to detail in all these regards. As the work began, we felt comfortable expanding the work scope beyond the renovation to include repairing areas elsewhere in our house and garage where we had incurred water damage. This required sheet rocking, texturizing, and painting. The finished repairs are fabulous. Kathie as Principal, Design Assistant Thea, and Production Manager Daryl visited regularly to oversee subs, check on progress, and answer questions. We communicated with them and others on the teams in person and through email and texting. Everyone was responsive and helpful. We were always notified about who would be coming and when to expect them. My husband is handy and wanted to contribute to the work effort (and save us a little money). Kathie was receptive to his doing this, so some of the painting and the setting and grouting of our kitchen backsplash tile were his to accomplish. He comfortably worked alongside the MDI team, staying out of their way as they completed other aspects of the project. We enjoyed their company. We felt that the pricing of the various jobs we had done was fair. When she could, Kathie passed along savings to us and enabled us to order a wine cooler, faucets, and a light fixture through her in order to receive discounts on cost. We love our new kitchen and family room and are pleased to have had such a good remodeling experience. MDI is a great company that we intend to use again for other projects. We have already referred them to friends and family and will continue to do so without hesitation.

I put off renovating our home for over a decade because I was intimidated by the enormity of the process. From the first meeting with Kathie at Maughan Design and Remodel, I knew I was in good hands. Ours was a large job involving a complete overhaul of the kitchen, new plumbing throughout the house, sewer work, new hardwood floors, lighting upgrades, updated laundry room, updated TV room, patio redesign, and more. Having lived in this house for almost 30 years, it was hard to envision how it could be changed. Kathie did a thorough job of identifying my concerns. The solutions she and her team came up with were creative, stylish, and fit within my budget. Her crew is professional, considerate, and courteous. They were respectful of ourselves and our belongings. They pay great attention to detail, and the quality of their work is uniformly superb. Cabinetry and paint work exceeded my expectations. They attend to small things that help smooth the process of living through a major renovation. For example, they made a point of cleaning up the worksite at the end of each work day. That made the construction disorder easier to bear. She holds her subcontractors to the same high standards as her crew. Communications were quick and clear. When questions, problems, or changes came up (because they inevitably do) they were handled quickly to our complete satisfaction. Thanks to Kathie and her team, we now have a home that brings us great joy. We’re already thinking ahead to having them do the rest of the house.

From beginning to end, the remodel of our bar was wonderful. The design and concept of what the finished project was to look like came out exactly as planned. Kathie listened to us and understood exactly what we had in mind. Design staff and the subcontractors that worked on the project were very professional. Their work ethic and incredible detail they displayed was apparent that they cared about their part for what the final outcome would look like. As they worked throughout the day they were very concerned about our furnishings, cleanliness and outside yard as they came and went. Maughn staff checked in each day to make sure that everything was going as planned. We were very excited about the products and materials that were used. Amazing experience. Thank you.

When a real estate agent told me she couldn't sell my Father's house after his death because it was in such bad shape, I knew I needed to make some updates. It was the house I grew up in, and ultimately I ended up purchasing the property from my siblings. Then came the necessary improvements. I knew this was my last home. My husband and I expect to retire here and stay, so I wanted to make it my own. I shopped around for professionals who could help me create the reality I wanted. I am terrible at coming up with plans or designs. I don't have the vision. But I know what I like. Kathy from Maughan was the only designer in the Portland area that would come all the way out to my property (a 40 minute drive from Portland) and walk around in it to "see" the potential. She literally closes her eyes and waves her hands around and says what she sees once the remodel is finished. It was both entertaining and enlightening I had several problem areas - the kitchen was long and narrow resulting in an area that was always plugged with people and things. The house was never vented for central heating. I had a fireplace that was not up to code and a woodstove with the same problem, but I didn't want certain changes made to them. The house was built in the 1920's and as a result the bedrooms and ceilings were pretty low. Kathy had great ideas around all of these issues. This was pretty much a whole house remodel. Creating a master suite out of two bedrooms upstairs, completely redoing the kitchen and bath downstairs, and updating the living room and parlor. it was a major undertaking. Kathy was up front about costs and things she called "expensive but not pretty" like plumbing and heating issues. The team handled EVERYTHING so I didn't have to worry about it, though they kept me up to date on things like permitting issues (apparently my property is in a wildlife overlay that makes adding square footage to the building impossible in Washington County. Kathy and the team came up with an alternative foundation idea that the county accepted so I could bump my kitchen out 3 feet despite this overlay.) I showed Kathie and the design team ideas I liked and things that were necessary v things I'd like if I had the money (I insisted on a big old copper tub in the upstairs bathroom but when I started talking about adding the basement to the remodel and Kathie estimated the cost we decided the basement will be another day - when I win the lottery perhaps.) The project manager Daryl is a saint and so personable. Maughan did what they could to keep costs down and when I compared remodels other friends had done (smaller projects, true, but still remodels) and I mathed it out, Maughan design was well within the same cost range. There was no time when my house was open to elements and the contractors were nowhere to be found. They did not tear things apart and then disappear. They handled everything and it is BEAUTIFUL!

Maughan Design & Remodel is creative and organized. It was a pleasure working with the owner and her designer. They listened and hen created a plan based on what I wanted. They were attentive to details and followed through. What a pleasure to work with.

Once we decided to redo the kitchen our next step was to choose a design team. We chose Maughan. We called and set up an introductory meeting. It went really well and we felt very comfortable with our meeting. We put our money down to seal our commitment to this company. Kathie seemed like the perfect person to carry out our wishes. We had several home visits with Kathie, and in her office. The trades that she uses were discussed and vetted to her high standards. We had other meetings in her office choosing the cabinets, hardware, counter tops, backsplash etc. We were able to be our own contractor with some of the work, We laid our own floors, did some painting and was able to hire out some of the work ourselves. Kathie was very conscience of our budget and allowed us to take on some of the work like the plumbing and we ran the electricians. We also hired a separate group that replaced our sliding door and vaulted the old kitchen ceiling. We went on a two-week vacation and the team kept on working. When we returned all the fun stuff started. The trades came and did their work in a timely manner as not to be in each other’s way. I loved the work that was done by all of the trades. The main cabinet shop is here in town so getting from the shop to the house was very easy. The carpenters and workforce worked extremely well together. If one measured twice and got two different numbers, he asked another worker to measure and counted on each other to come up with the right number. They were always considerate of messes and cleaned up at the end of each day. They made sure we knew when they would arrive next time and what they planned on getting done. If a mistake was made it was corrected promptly and finished to perfection. I was unhappy with one cabinet door and after several folks, including Kathie, came to see what the alternative would be we came up with a plan and it was redone to my liking. A lot of the workers were named Chris (3 of them) which was fun and then there was Scottie. We can’t say enough good things about these guys. Katherine, Crystal, and other folks were here to keep an eye on the work and progress. We received notes of each time they came. We received invoices in a timely manner. In the end we have the kitchen of our dreams. On time and on budget!!

Maughan Design, Inc. came highly recommended by friends. Still, this was the biggest project we'd ever undertaken. We have no skills in design or construction, or even in decorating. The decisions seemed daunting, which is probably why we’d put off renovating our kitchen for so long. Maughan helped us learn what was possible, what our options were. They gave a lot of time to decisions while we were in the planning stage (on paper, when it’s cheap to change your mind), so that there were few surprises once we got into the building of the project, when changes can get expensive. And when the building did start, it was topnotch. The workmanship in our new kitchen is far superior to anything else in the house. Maughan crews are considerate and tidy—every precaution was taken to try to control dust and debris, and each day the crew left the site neat. When we worked with Maughan, every detail mattered as if it were their own, as if they would be the ones to live with it. In our experience, that is not usual and customary, that is special. Maughan is where you go when you want special.

We engaged Maughan Design & Remodel for a major overhaul of a home we purchased in West Linn in August of 2021. We contracted with them to remodel our primary suite bathroom & closet, our living room, our kid’s bathroom, and countless small additions along the way. We are fortunate to have worked with many contractors over the years at different properties and Maughan Design is easily the best we’ve ever hired. Simply put, they are incredible to work with and have our wholehearted endorsement. We are so happy with the end result that it is sometimes hard to believe that we get to live in a place that is so well considered and luxurious. We selected Maughan after a lengthy search for a woman-owned firm that would be able to handle the size of our project and level of fit and finish we were targeting. From our very first conversation with Kathie we knew we had found our partner for this project. We were looking for someone with a strong POV who would also work with our vision to ensure an incredible end product and she is exactly that. One of the primary characteristics we use to select a partner for this type of work is their communication style and commitment to working with us and we found Kathie’s approach to her business to be precisely what we needed. She is responsive, proactive, always offered respectfully her opinion on how to address an issue or opportunity without prompting, and always made us feel like our project was the most important one on her slate. Ethan, who started out as an apprentice and was a full-time designer by the time we finished, was our daily program lead. Kathie’s commitment to helping him learn the industry while giving him free reign to develop his design point of view was masterful and our project was better for it. Ethan is bold and loves to present expressive, novel ideas (many of which we accepted!) while also incorporating our particular aesthetic and goals into the design. If you get Ethan on your project you are a lucky one! We also had a great experience with Mac, Daryl, and Scottie throughout the project and miss seeing them around. The end result of our year-long project with Maughan exceeded our expectations. There isn’t a single day where we don’t appreciate the final product, the attention to detail, and the comfort the updates to our home provides our family. If you’re looking for a partner to help transform your space, we cannot recommend Maughan Design & Remodel highly enough.

My husband and I had never taken on a major remodel and Maughan Design & Remodel made it approachable and less stressful than we imagined. We had moments of stress but never due to who we hired and just part of remodeling an 80 year old house. The entire process we were impressed with their creativity, superb communication, diligence, attention to detail, and quick resolution of issues. Kathie was open and honest from the very first meeting regarding budget and expectations. Erin’s notes ensured nothing was lost in translation and we had records of every meeting and decision. The entire team (and subs), especially Scotty and Daryl, were respectful of our home and animals and the work was top notch. Let me first say: We love our home! We have worked with Kathy and Erin for over a year, which was expected given that we continued to expand the scope of our renovation and that there was a supply shortage related to the pandemic. Throughout this journey with them, from the planning stage to construction, implementation, and review, we could not have been happier with our experience. Kathy, Erin, and Maughan Design worked hard to respect our budget while delivering an absolutely beautiful renovation. They were responsive to our concerns and feedback, going above and beyond to insure that we were happy through the ups and downs of our renovation; for instance, Kathy personally visited our home innumerable times to check on the progress of our home, answer our questions, and so forth. To boot, we were living on both the East and West Coasts, and Kathy and Erin went the extra mile to have extra eyes on our project while we were not able to physically be there. Overall, we are delighted with how our home turned out. We are thinking about doing additional work on our home in the future, and Maughan Design will, no questions asked, be the first people we call to touch up our home.

I highly recommend Maughan Design for kitchen and bathroom updates. Our designer, Cassidy, came up with creative solutions for both spaces, with lots of input from us. She was very attentive to details throughout the whole process. The workmen were friendly and very respectful that we were living amidst the workspace. My wife and I approached Maughan to do the bathroom remodel designs for our home. It was the first renovation that we have done and our first home so we had no idea what to expect from the process. During the initial consult we were very impressed by Kathy's expertise, professionalism and of course her keen eye for design. When we decided to remodel our kitchen in Sep 2020, we found many potential companies. After interviewing several companies we selected Maughan Design & Remodel. We’re so happy we picked the right company! The owner Kathie is down to earth, talented in design as well as a general contractor, and she has great business integrity. The whole team in Maughan Design & Remodel are very easy to work with. From design to construction, every team member ensures great quality and professionalism. They were very responsive, always catered to our requests, and answered every one of concerns. Our life was super busy with work and a new born, but fortunately Maughan Design & Remodel took care of everything for us. We were very confident and had complete trust in them. As a matter of fact, after we hiring them to remodel our kitchen, we also hired them to remodel our mater bathroom, hardwood floors, fireplace, and several other projects. They all turned out so beautiful and we are so happy! When we have other remodeling projects in the future, Maughan Design & Remodel will be the first company we go to!

We did a kitchen remodel in 2013 with Maughan Design and knew who to call when we were ready to update the rest of our house. Kathie is a master at redefining a space. She thinks outside the box and comes up with creative solutions. Cassidy is amazing with details and she and Kathie work seamlessly to put everything together and manage the team. Actually I wish I could give 10 stars. Kathi and her team have remodeled our entire house over the last 15-20 years. The last big project was the modernization of our upstairs which by the way was a remodel of the remodel she did 15 years earlier!!! This project also included the outdoor front of the house. The front is a dream and neighbors and strangers always stop by to say how much they love it. Recently she remodeled a new office space for me to match the modern upstairs remodeled. Kathi listens. This is important. She wants to understand you and how you live in your space. I love that about her. Her staff are so wonderful. I am sad that this is likely our last remodel, in this house anyway. Remodeling and construction can be a challenge-but NOT with Maughan Design. From our very first meeting I knew we were in great hands! Crystal & Cassidy listened, took notes, measured, took pictures and came back to us with plans we loved. EVERYTHING about the remodel went better than we could have imagined. Their crew and subcontractors were clean, skilled and professional. Their good nature and willingness to answer any questions we had was reassuring. We loved that Maughan Design handled all the details-getting permits, ordering materials, and scheduling the subcontractors. The crew showed up regularly every week day, they cleaned up each day and were very respectful of our property. Our neighbors said it perfectly when they toured the finished product.....”Your designer got it right. This is amazing, just amazing!” We totally agree!

After meeting with several companies who offered a wide range of project engagement, we chose Maughan Design & Remodel to remodel the kitchen in our 1929 Tudor. From our introductory meeting I was impressed by the level of expertise and organization that they seemed to bring to their jobs. Once our project was underway, they did not disappoint. We were looking to remove a wall and reimagine our kitchen footprint and Maughan was able to present us drawings for multiple options and talk us through pros/cons of each. A budget and timeline were provided and both were adhered to for the duration of the project. Cost effective alternatives were offered to save money when available and they were able to make timing adjustments on certain steps of the project in order to better accommodate our family who was working from home and schooling from home! All of this was combined with fantastic oversight by the designer and project manager who made herself available even when it was to talk thru a silly decision that my spouse and I were deadlocked on. After hearing so many remodeling horror stories, I am pleased to be completing our kitchen with nothing but appreciation for the Maughan team.

We are seriously grateful to the entire team at Maughan Design. Our family will have a kitchen enviornment that goes far beyond functional. We all hang out in there just because it looks so good. The carefully thought out design ideas nearly doubled our storage space and their years of experience helped to completely streamline the effort that goes in to making meals. We are SO happy our neighbor referred us to Maughan Design & Remodel! We had been wanting to do a kitchen/family room remodel/expansion for several years, but had a couple failed attempts at finding a design that would get us what we wanted without completely rebuilding… Then in walked Kathie Maughan! I do not even know how to describe this, but during our first meeting it was clear she was the one who could listen, understand, and bring our vision to life. She clearly has some sort of special talent for visualizing what she has to work with and what her client wants to end up with – it was amazing to watch her analyze the current space and come up with creative and functional options. Then to learn we could count on her and her amazing team to take care of every detail from start to finish was so comforting. And speaking of her team – they are indeed super amazing! We feel extremely fortunate to have had them working to make our dream a reality these past several months – we truly cannot thank them enough. Oh, and we ended up doing more than originally planned (bathroom remodel, all new flooring, updated fireplace mantels, fresh paint everywhere, etc.) - so glad we did! Soon after purchasing our new “old” home we went to work researching design and contracting firms in the Portland area to help us with a refresh. Maughan was on the list to contact and we knew after the first discussion with Crystal that we had found the company we wanted to partner with. Looking back, several things come to mind describing our experience working with Maughan - honest, trustworthy, detail oriented, constant communication, responsive and overall great service. I loved working with Kathie and Angie for kitchen design plans. We were debating on whether or not to work with a designer for our kitchen remodel. Since we are doing the work ourselves (my husband is a cabinet maker among other things), we weren't sure if hiring a designer would really be necessary or worth the additional cost. After meeting with Kathie, we decided to go for it and we are so glad we did! I'm detail-oriented and thought I had figured out most of the design elements already but soon realized there was so much more to think about and plan for than I had anticipated. Kathie also added so much value in enhancing the design I wouldn't have even thought of. This is huge considering I've been thinking about my new kitchen for the last 5 years and have already done a lot of research. Now we have a complete set of very detailed construction plans and are so well prepared and ready to start. They say planning is the most important part of a renovation and it's so true. We could not have done it without Maughan!

I love my new master bathroom! I was tempted to redo the bathroom myself but because it needed to be gutted I was scared to get in too deep. I’m so glad I found Maughan Design. They came up with a floor plan that I would’ve never imagined myself and was able to fit a large shower, overly large soaker tub, and a nice double vanity in what I thought was an impossible space. I really didn’t think it could be done. You can have as much or little involvement in the project as you’d like. I wanted to be hands-off so I picked a few finishes and then they handled everything. Great attention to detail, the timeline and cost was what they quoted up front, and they handled any issues that came up. The entire team was so easy to work with. I’ve hired many subs for small projects but I’ve never had workers clean the floor on their way out the door, every day! Very easy to have in my home.

HER VIEW: SIMMER, SIZZLE, HOT! Our designer/builder took a walk through our tired, water-damaged kitchen and within 10 minutes casually suggested a move of the refrigerator into the pantry; later identified the wasted space of the “pony wall”. The new design included many other details each of which led from a ho-hum to H O T kitchen! We love the spacious feel, durable materials, and simple sparkling beauty of the result. DETAILS I ENJOY: Commercial vinyl heat-sealed plank flooring (from water damaged maple wood) Spacious quartz countertop (from Formica rough sawn) Under-mount stainless steel sink (from white porcelain top mount chipped, stained) Cabinets to the ceiling, semi-custom (from peeling foil cabinets) Corner cabinet units for pots/pans/trash (from empty corners) Hands-free stainless faucet (from the white faucet) Coordinated lighting throughout including under-counter, Philips Hue PROCESS: PROJECT: moved systematically under the direction of Maughan Design and Remodel team. They listened well, coordinated each sub, and paid exceptional attention to dust reduction and keeping a tidy work area. TIME: The 10 weeks worked for us as follows: All downstairs furniture was moved into storage; we used the refrigerator into our garage, some appliances in the laundry room and went out of town for a conference! COST: comparable to installing a new luxury car in our home but will last longer than a new car. The price was within the general range of Google estimated for our zip code. WALKTHROUGH: after completing a “punch list” of final items, we found each detail satisfied or exceeded our expectations. OUTCOME: The disappearing act of the refrigerator and pony wall with many additional design details led to an open, integrated kitchen that flows seamlessly and beautifully into our living area. I love the spacious feel! Our goals of form, function, and beauty to our eye were each checked off. The final result exceeded our expectations. We now have a H O T kitchen! Would we approach this company again for a future upgrade project? Yes, in a heartbeat. Yes, we recommend Maughan Design and Remodel without any reservations. His Review Maughan Design & Remodel recently completed a 10 week remodel of our small kitchen and we couldn't be more satisfied with the results. They transformed the small kitchen into a much more functionally and attractive space. From the first home design visit by owner Kathie Maughan and designer Staci Holt, we knew this was the right team for us. We went into this project with an open mind, looking for any suggestions to improve functionality and appearance of our kitchen. We were not disappointed. During the construction phase, we lived in the home with no kitchen or living room. The construction crew did their best to reduce dust from entering the remaining living quarters and were very respectful during the entire process. They actually cleaned up debris and vacuumed at the end of each workday. The attention to detail was remarkable. The construction quality is outstanding. When we noticed a couple of items we felt needed attention, our concerns were addressed immediately and the work completed within days. When we had a question about the process we simply emailed Stacie and she responded, usually the same day. Maughan Design & Remodel clearly takes pride in their work and is very customer service oriented.

We bought our condo 6 years ago and knew we wanted to make some changes to the kitchen and master bath. We talked to a lot of friends and neighbors to try to find the right designer/contractor and procrastinated. This spring we finally made the leap and are so glad we did. Maughan Design was wonderful and exceeded our high expectations. Kudos to Crystal, Darryl, Scottie, Matt, and Brian. Starting in October 2018 we interviewed 3 contractors before coming across Maughan Design & Remodel while perusing the Houzz site. The reviews were so impressive we made an appointment to discuss a complete remodel of our cramped and outdated galley kitchen. The first meeting at the studio lived up to the reviews. Kathie, the owner, and designer, Cassidy, questioned us extensively about our space and what we wanted to accomplish with a remodel. They took many notes about our ideas for the space. Next up was a home visit with Kathie and Cassidy. Again, more notes and measurements. The design process took about three months. We knew we wanted a July 1st start, so there was not a lot of stress about time. They helped us with all of our choices and had a lot of great suggestions. We have a feeling they wouldn’t have let us make a terrible mistake. Our old kitchen was completely gutted and even though that is stressful, it actually went very smoothly. The rest of the house was well sealed off from the dust and the Maughan employees and subcontractors were all terrific and did great work. Daryl, the project manager, kept things on a strict schedule and Cassidy came by often to check in with us and wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. It took 2 months from start to finish and we absolutely love the transformation. Moving the fridge from one wall to the other opened things up with more counter space and combining the cook top and wall oven into one stove also helped a lot. We are very happy to recommend Maughan Design & Remodel!

I contracted for a whole house remodel. Amazing company. Kathie, the company owner is reliable, honest good listener, and very intuitive. Kathie gets to know you as a client and by listening begins to understand your asthetic. She asks questions to clarify her understanding of your requirements. I was presented with a notebook and a budget with options in cost and add ons if I so choose. She contracts with companies she has vetted and has had good experiences with in the past. All I had to do was make a call if I had a question or wanted to change my mind about anything it was done. The staff working in my house were respectful and personable. All deadlines were met and if there was a delay I was notified immediately and the reason. Delays were rare however. I now have a beautiful comfortable home. I am so happy.

We had our master bath remodeled to remove a clawfoot tub and slate floor, and move & replace the toilet. We had a tiled walk-in shower with a bench, and glass door and lighting installed. We had a new hex tile floor and a wall-hung toilet installed. Our house is a 1926 bungalow, and we wanted the remodeled bathroom to loosely look like this period. Maughan met with us a number of times to get our vision & select materials. Kathie explained things to us in an understandable manner & was sensitive to our wants & needs. The job took longer than estimated, which was a bit inconvenient (eight weeks rather than five weeks), and was more expensive than estimated (around $20,000 more.) We understand that this is common with house remodel projects, so we are not holding it against Maughan. That being said, the workers did a great job - the finished bathroom is beautiful. The workers were easy to have in the house & were good with our large, pesty dog. They put down floor coverings to protect the hardwoods & stair carpet, and generally did no harm. We did find one instance where the ceiling of the room below the bathroom was damaged from the work - we pointed this out & it was fixed. We had received favorable recommendations of Maughan from friends, and would recommend them to others. We would hire Maughan to do other remodel projects at our house.

I was a bit intimidated by the prospects of remodeling our kitchen. The people at Maughan Design helped me find peace and confidence. Their experience and expertise put me at ease. They dealt professionally with doubts and concerns. I came to trust them and I have not been disappointed. Every person who entered our home, whether Maughan Design employee or subcontractor, was respectful of our family and our home. Their attitudes and professionalism sprinkled the project with many enjoyable moments. I love our new kitchen.

While in escrow on our new 1700+ SF condo, we started looking for a design-build contractor that had strong reviews. Many such firms don't work on condos, but we came across Maughan Design & Remodel, and scheduled a meeting. From the first meeting we we're impressed with her professionalism, and no pressure approach. Kathie and Keela were very hands on, asking lots of questions and input on our design preferences, and regularly laying out a manageable number of options for us, truly guiding us through the process. Our remodel touched every surface of our condo (except the laundry room), and included moving a few walls, always a challenge in a condo. Kathie worked within the building's structural confines to help us maximize the open plan we envisioned. During construction, Kathie's team kept the process very smooth for us, with very little in the way of surprises, and then really hustled at the end when we had an absolute move-in deadline. The entire process from closing, design/permitting, and construction took six months, and we are absolutely delighted with our new home, in large part because of the work of Maughn Design and Remodel.

I knew of this company from their work on the remodel of some friends' house. I purchased an older home and wanted to expand the small main bath, change the fireplace to gas with a new surround, add a porch at the back door, and lower the garage floor 2' so I could actually safely drive in it. Those were the major components of the remodel that also included painting and new flooring. I was so impressed by the work of Kathie and Lancea. They presented a great comprehensive design and were always open to my input. We communicated in person and via email and text and I never had to wait long for an answer to a question. Kathie has a smooth running business with all the components (design, permitting, sub-contractors, etc.) necessary for a high quality remodel. The people I worked with (Kathie, Lancea, Darryl, and Mark) made this major remodel a much easier project than it could have been. And the results are wonderful. For any projects in the future, Maughan Design will be my first stop.

We first learned of Maughan Design from neighbors in our condo building who were very pleased with the outcome of their master bathroom remodel in early 2018. After we checked out the neighbors’ bath, we decided to reach-out to Maughan to explore a similar project for our large master bathroom. From the initial meeting with Kathie and Cassidy in May 2018 to the final walk-through and punch-list completion in late August we were very impressed with both the design and project management aspects of Maughan’s work. Our condo is about nine years old (original owner and lived here almost seven years) and although perfectly functional and showing little wear-and-tear, we felt it was time for a refresh of our master bathroom. Kathie and the team are wonderful listeners and helped us better define our goals and what was most important. The resulting design provided a great new look and new finishes and fixtures combined with re-purposing of several existing elements we wished to keep. We consistently felt we were in good hands with the Maughan team at each step of the process. When a couple hiccups occurred as is common in any major remodel the team was always ready with a solution that kept everything on-time and on-budget. Daryl did an amazing job coordinating the various contractors throughout the process and was always mindful of cleanliness and security in our home. We were especially pleased with the team’s experience with condo remodels which brings some restrictions on hours of work, noise concerns and issues with service elevator access. One particular example stands out. During the height of the tile demo (the nosiest part of the remodel) our neighbor across the hall was in the process of trying to sell their unit. They told us about a prospective buyer looking at their unit the following day and ask if the work could be adjusted to limit the noise so as not to scare-off the possible buyer. We talked to Cassidy who was able to make a minor adjustment in the schedule the next day that enabled us to keep the work going but temporarily stop the noisy demo. We appreciated Maughan’s consideration of our needs as well as those of our neighbors. We would definitely make Maughan our first call for any future remodeling in our condo home and strongly recommend them to Portland area homeowners looking for great design and strong project management and oversight.

My husband and I are very pleased with the work of Maughan Design and Remodel. We began the process of remodeling our kitchen, and, while we had some strong ideas in mind, Kathie and Crystal led us to a better way to accomplish our goals. We were only without a kitchen for 3.5 weeks, such a good surprise as we'd anticipated far longer. Great work by Maughan's crew, too! We are quite happy with the outcome!

Kathi and staff did a fabulous kitchen remodel years ago for us; so when we decided to build a new home remotely (in Sunriver, OR) - we hired Maughan Design to help us with coordinating all the interior selections. Kathi came to our current home and based all our choices on our current furniture and rug - she is wonderful to work with; patient, a great listener and stretched us a bit out of our comfort zone to create a spectacular new home. We were 3 hours from the build and she and her staff worked as our project managers!! From the big decisions, like flooring, cabinets, lighting; finishes - you name it - to selecting the perfect interior paint color!! Our builder has been in business for over 27 years and he kept telling us how much all his subcontractors loved our choices - such a great experience; HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!

Kathie and her team are all talented professionals who provide great service and leave behind excellent work. I am probably one of the worst types of clients a remodeling firm can have. I am a professional project manager with years of experience in contracting and construction. Normally I would be my own general contractor but in this case I needed design help and being new to the area I didn't want the hassle of finding quality subcontractors. Maughan brought all of the appropriate skills and quality craftsman together to help us through the project. Maughan Design remodeled my Kitchen, did a design for the remodeling of my basement, and also performed the base structural and underfloor plumbing work to start the basement remodel. In the Kitchen we had wanted to keep most of the cabinets but a lot of what we wanted to keep needed to be repaired and updated, then the rest of the build had to be matched for style and wood types. Her team was meticulous and made sure every detail was done right. Our designer took the time to fully understand the look we were going for and made material selections that fit perfectly with our vision. Our kitchen turned out beautifully and functions really well. In the basement we needed to rebuild structural elements that were a patchwork of previous remodeling attempt and cut through the concrete to move the bathroom drains. There were some significant challenges with both portions of the work but we were able to negotiate changes that worked and kept all parties, if not happy, at least satisfied that the agreements were fair. I would absolutely hire Kathie and her team for future projects. I would be confident that they would do a excellent job and leave me with work that all could be proud of.

We had been searching for a design-build team that was led by a woman or a person of color, and were excited to come across Maughan Design and Remodel owned and operated by Kathie Maughn. Our first meeting with Kathie went great. She explained her company's philosophy and the process to go from ideas to finished home. When we shared with her our budget she said we might be a bit ambitious in our project scope, but that she and her team would be willing to help us prioritize our work help us create a beautiful home. This exactly what we needed to hear since neither of us had ever remodeled most of a home before. Kathie, Lancea and Daryl were fabulous throughout the process. Kathie and Lancea presented us with fun, bold, quality choices for our remodel while being respectful of our budget. They were great at suggesting places where we might want to splurge, and areas where being more practical made sense. They came up with interesting ideas about how to design the space and deal with structural challenges. For example, a radon mitigation exhaust pipe in our living room that Maughn Design hid under a beautiful, functional bench with storage. When we encountered challenges regarding unexpected costs, or a tile choice we decided against after installation, Maughn Design proved to be proactive problem-solvers with creative insights on how to address the issues. They were communicative throughout the process, answered questions as they arose and were willing to make adjustments through project completion. When our remodel was done we moved into a beautiful home. As we have settled in, we have noticed the little details that show the amazing craftsmanship, attention to detail and personal investment they all made in our home. We loved working with Maughn Design and would hire Kathie, Lancea, and Daryl again, without a doubt. If you want a team that values communication, high quality work, thinking creatively and truly honoring the home owners sense of style we would absolutely recommend Maughn Design!

Maughn was amazing to work with from the initial consultation to the finish. We had our 1970 ranch style house completely renovated: kitchen moved, sunken living room brought up and walls torn down along with full gut of guest bathroom. The staff were professional, courteous and knowledgeable. I have already recommended them to several of our neighbors! Maughn took the crazy out of a project so big and made it doable!

Kathy was very flexible and helpful to get me started in the design of our new home that we were remodeling. She was willing to help us get started on design style, color and supported other decisions like carpet choice. My husband is a Contractor (retired) but didn't want her full set of Project Management services, but I was very pleased to get her opinion on creative design elements. Whether you have a full project you'd like her to manage or you want her creative and design opinions, she is flexible and desires to meet you where you are at. I highly recommend her.

This past winter, we did an extensive remodel of our home working with Kathie Maughan of Maughan Design & Remodel and her talented crew and sub-contractors. It took 4 months from demo to completion, everything went as expected and we came in on time and on budget….even with some last minute add-ons we couldn’t resist and which naturally increased our costs, all was still completed within the planned time frame and within our budget. The finished project is more beautiful and functional than we could have imagined Four months is the time from demo to completion but we spent several months before on planning with the conscientious attention of Kathie and the Project Coordinator/Designer, Lancea. Kathie came up with wonderful space planning ideas and design features. She presented realistic budgets for various aspects of the job including thorough line item budgets for every step of the project and explained each step of the project before we began the work. Lancea loves to design and I had so much fun working with her and bouncing ideas off each other. She approached me one day with a schematic for the kitchen tile work using the tiles I had chosen. I was speechless…her design/layout was so creative and beautiful. It is still my favorite part of the remodel and probably the most commented on feature from friends and family. She also worked magic with beautiful tile designs in 2 bathrooms. Our remodel included 2 bathrooms, our dining area, living room, foyer and a total reworking of our kitchen. We have new wood floors, a more open floor plan, a bench seat in the dining area and a lovely foyer with new flooring, grass cloth and staircase bannisters and railing.The kitchen was gutted and expanded with beautiful cabinets, tile work, island with a beautiful wood top, quartz counters and new appliances. Her crew & sub-contractors could not have been more courteous toward us and respectful of our home. They wouldn’t hesitate to fix anything that was amiss, even if it was not within the agreed upon job scope. Things like doors that wouldn’t latch, a pocket door that had been stuck for at least 5 years, a heating vent under the house that wasn’t attached properly by the company who installed a new furnace for us a year ago are just a few examples of existing quirks that were all taken care of just as a matter of course. We witnessed this high degree of workmanship, pride and integrity throughout our project. As well as Kathie herself and Lancea, the Designer/Project co-ordinator, the others we worked with on her regular crew are Daryl, the Production Manager; Jeff, the Main Project Carpenter; Scott, Carpenter & Mark, Carpenter Assistant. Sub-contactors she likes to work with and who worked on our project include Ted the owner of TMK Custom Cabinetry & TJ, his assistant; Ted with Estelle’s Electric was the electrician; Scotty with Crown Plumbing; Lee & Tom with Custom Stone Creations did our counters; Jeff with Columbia Tile & Stone did the tile work and Wayne of Wayne Anderson Wallcoverings did our foyer grasscloth. We would heartily recommend Kathie Maughn Design & Remodel for anyone’s project, large or small.

We are thrilled with our kitchen and bathroom remodels/updates! Kathie and Keela with Maughan Design were fantastic to work with. Their ideas, suggestions and attention to details were magnificent. They listened to what was important to us and offered excellent suggestions to things we hadn't even considered. The entire crew with Maughan Design were a joy to work with. Very respectful in every aspect of the job and felt like a little extension of the family by the end of the project. We had our entire kitchen and master bathroom completely redone and a powder bath updated. Unforeseen bumps inevitably are to be expected, and they were handled with such professionalism and communicated very well. Even through our own unforeseen family circumstances, they worked so hard to accommodate an unscheduled large gathering in our home right in the middle of the remodel. I appreciate the organized and clean manner this huge project was handled with. Keela took excellent note to our tastes and styles and did an amazing job designing some beautiful, functional spaces! We hired Maughan for a master bath remodel in a condo in the Pearl and we're very happy with the experience and the result. They took care of everything (design, purchasing, permits, schedule, approvals, construction, etc.) which is exactly what we wanted. They were very good at pulling together several designs to choose from so we didn't have an overload of options. I'd say they are particularly strong in project planning and their construction crew (especially Daryl) is excellent. We expected something a bit more contemporary but can't blame Maughan for that as we chose the products. We only had one hiccup in this rather large project with a lot of moving parts. A toilet didn't fit correctly and it took some time to figure out a satisfactory solution (replacement and cost). Maughan came through and the issue was resolved to the satisfaction of all. I believe that's the true test of a company. We would (and will) use Maughan again.

The condo we bought has magnificent views of the river and downtown, but it was finished with only the most basic options. The interior was drab and uninteresting. Our dream was to strip out everything and start over but that would be prohibitively expensive. We met with Kathie and Lancea at the condo and discussed our tastes, priorities, and budget. Many of their ideas that day hadn't occurred to us and were quickly adopted. Within a couple weeks they had us come to their showroom where they had picked out two or three samples of things such as cabinet pulls, wood flooring, and tile. Everything was spot on. They had heard and understood our tastes. We typically like to look through all the options and then are fraught with indecision. It was really amazing to be presented with so few samples that so perfectly matched our tastes. Our expectation was that we would be able to afford about 80% of what we were discussing. Kathie was mindful of our budget and proposed a way of mixing existing refinished kitchen cabinetry with a new pantry and island. We also had a horribly boring gas fireplace surrounded by nothing but drywall. Instead of replacing it as we expected, she wrapped the fireplace in the most amazing stone like tile and put a mantle over the top and now it is the centerpiece of the room. The estimate was low enough that we could afford everything and we actually added on remodeling the laundry room. In the end we were able to remodel all rooms and closets except the bathrooms, and they were able to spruce up the bathrooms with new paint. Kathie's crew has an attention to detail that is extraordinary. I would visit the condo nearly daily and the few imperfections I would notice would be gone before I ever needed to mention them. The new cabinetry was well built. Grout work was laid cleanly. Drywall patching was undetectable. The paint thoroughly covered the previous much darker colors. Their goal everywhere was perfection. In addition they worked well with our condo's HOA. The property manager had nothing but good things to say about their daily interactions. We now sit at home with this quite remarkable river view and can equally enjoy our quite remarkable interior thanks to Kathie and crew.

Updated. Long story short, we had initially brought in Kathie for a design consult but passed on her services as several other contractors bid well below her price. After wasting over $6k in cost with a competitor (they ultimately ended up quoting much more than Kathie with a far less attractive design) we went back to Kathie and were rewarded with a wonderful kitchen at a price point we could handle. We managed to get to an acceptable price range as Kathie and team did a superior job of laying out options and the cost consequences throughout. Once the concept was locked in, we had ample aesthetic support from Kathie and Keela which reduced some of the frustration which my wife and I may have otherwise experienced when trying to marry different tastes. Moving into construction mode, the team was first-rate. Clean, courteous, diligent with crisp communication throughout the project. Issues that arose were promptly resolved with no bargaining or excuses - just robust professionalism. We had a few minor out-of-scope issues for which we were charged fair prices. We plan to use Kathie again for our next major renovation and have already recommended to friends and family.

Kathie Maughn of Maughn Design and her crew were a pleasure to work with from the first meeting to the final walk through. Kathie is a very talented designer with innovative ideas and knows how to achieve what you envision. Our project was a complete kitchen remodel with wine room/cellar and the planning was extraordinary. The contractors were all a joy to work with and we looked forward to seeing them each day. Rarely did a day go by that someone wasn’t out working on the project. The contractors followed the plan and stayed on schedule! We had a time line that we needed to finish the project by and the entire team pitched in at the end to make that happen. Maughn Design was very clear about the budget and kept us updated throughout the project. Never once did we feel like we didn’t know where our money was being spent. Everyone was very flexible with us and if we wanted to do additional things not originally talked about, they were happy to help make it happen. All in all the experience was superb and we look forward to doing additional projects with Maughn Design in the future. Kathie Maughn as a business owner is a person of integrity, clear communication and warm personality. Her staff loves working for her and it shows when they are on the job. Thank you Maughn Design! I'm sure Maughan Design is the best in town after working with them. Kathie, and team can do it all. From design to completion, it was a pleasure. Daryl was the master carpenter and onsite job leader from day to day and lives up to the title. He's amazing with skills you can't believe. And on top that off, he's courteous, cleans up perfectly and is very professional. I could not have asked for a better person to have in my home for a couple months. Courtney ran things behind the scenes day to day. She visited several times a week checking on the design/construction plus herding subs and did an outstanding job. The project finished on time and within our budget. We now have a beautiful master bedroom and bathroom. Thank you Maughan Design!

My husband and I purchased a 1911 two bedroom/one bath Portland bungalow in April and there were a few issues that we wanted to address before moving in. First, the one and only bathroom was in need of some serious LOVE and could only be accessed by going through one of the two bedrooms so some structural work was required. Second, the Douglas Fir flooring was in pretty bad shape so it needed to either be refinished or replaced. Finally, we wanted to create a more open floor plan by widening the opening between the kitchen and dining area. Kathie was the second contractor that I contacted but I immediately felt that she was the right contractor for us. So, after confirming that we could squeeze into their schedule, we retained Maughan Design. Kathie and Cortney were very easy to work with and our project was quickly underway with Scott as the lead carpenter. I was always kept informed about the status of the work and Cortney was always available whenever I had questions. We are very happy with the work that was done and we are planning to work with Kathie's team again.

Kathy and her team helped in two phases of a project. The first part was an upgrade of a 1990's kitchen and connected living area with the second project being a half bath remodel, stair upgrade and utility room improvement. We loved working with the Maughan Design folks-Kathy's innovation, Cortney's project planning and creativity, Scott's impeccable attention to detail and Brieanna for answering a hundred questions! We are extremely pleased with the relationship- from design to completion and love sharing it with friends. There are a few standouts-the innovative design for the bath sink and counter, the lovely granite stair step and the center island wrap made of stainless steel by artist Milo Lowe. I am sorry I can't include photos so you can see for yourself! We will go back to them again for further projects and highly recommend them for any size project.

We needed a remodel of our small kitchen in our condo in the Pearl. We were keeping our cabinets but adding to them which was a little tricky because they needed to match. We were also getting new appliances, counter tops, backsplash and lighting. Maughan Design did an excellent job helping us pick out just the right look. The work they did was excellent. All their workers were professional and cleaned up the space every day. I would use them again and will recommend them to my friends.

Our remodel project focused on the kitchen and dining room, living room fireplace, and lighting. We have a Lindal-style home built in the 1980’s that presented many challenges with the solid wood structure. After we first attempted to work with a contractor to carry out our ideas, we realized that the scope of our project really required a professional design and remodel company that would have adequate staff, knowledge, and experience to accommodate our project. A local high quality kitchen fixtures showroom recommended a few Portland area companies, and we spoke at length with each by telephone. Based upon our initial impressions, we met with Kathie Maughan at her design showroom in the NW Portland area. The showroom represented her professionalism and beautiful design sense. We were impressed with the large binder that each client receives, complete from the beginning of the project with multiple budgetary options, through CAD design and project timelines. Kathie then met with us at our home and we discussed design ideas and budgets. We were thoroughly impressed with both her ideas and skill in sketching out some preliminary options. We had such a solid initial impression that we decided to forego the rest of our screening process and hire Maughan Design for our project. Kathie is an unusually great listener – truly a rare find. This allowed her to connect with our preferences and taste in a way that is difficult to describe. With a fairly “rustic” style of house but a preference for more contemporary style, Kathie and her design coordinator, Cortney, somehow took our likes and dislikes and came up with several options that allowed efficient flow and beautiful, complementary colors and textures. Since we all wanted to keep the integrity of the wood structure, this was truly a challenge, and ultimately in order to stay within budget we had to forego a few extras we had hoped for. We prefer high quality products over extras, and we are so glad about our decision when we view the result. Kathie helped moderate our debates over style and design (as most husbands and wives will do) and we ended up finding very satisfactory compromises that somehow we enjoy without regret! One of these compromises included keeping an entryway closet I had hoped to remove entirely. I agreed to keep it with the qualification that it have new doors, ones which I suggested could include metal or some material other than wood. Cortney went to the drawing board and came up with an original design that has turned out to be a beautiful focal point of the entire remodel. We also presented the idea of a dining room “hutch” or wet bar, and Kathie came up with a beautiful built-in cabinet that completely transforms the dining room. In an attempt to provide fair and critical viewpoints of our experience, we did have bumps in the road and of course the process was not perfect. But without exception, whenever we approached Kathie with an issue or concern, she quickly responded and worked out a fair solution. For instance, once the kitchen faucet was installed, I realized that even though I had picked it out from a selection of photos, I disliked the result. We were prepared to pay for the change but Kathie immediately offered to replace it at no charge. There were a number of other incidences where Kathie took the higher road when we ran up against unexpected issues that will naturally occur in a remodel project. Our massive fireplace presented an unexpected challenge when the apparent “façade” of stone turned out to be solid rock from floor to ceiling. Kathie stood by our contract even though it took many extra days of labor, drilling and chiseling out the stones and reconfiguring the initial design. We paid for the difference in new stone design that resulted from the massive undertaking, but Kathie took the brunt of the expense without complaint. There were at times moments of confusion with billing descriptions, but we always received a quick response to our inquiry with satisfactory explanation. Kathie Maughan demonstrated complete integrity and honesty throughout our entire project. Kathie’s lead carpenter and project organizer, Daryl, is a talented and skilled multi-faceted professional who efficiently organized the variety of subcontractors and specialists while leaving an impeccable workspace each evening. His “can do” attitude made our experience truly positive and memorable. He is an incredible asset to Maughan Design, and his quality of work and gracious attitude were beyond exception. He worked around our personal issues and annoying habits with discrete care and professionalism. We now consider him a friend, and have fond memories of our months spent together. While the actual end of our project took a while to wrap up, with a few very small issues lingering perhaps too long, we are now at the point of completion and we are beyond thrilled with the result. We now understand that surviving a remodel while living in the home is a huge accomplishment. It certainly has a way of revealing all of our worst and best traits at the same time. Many home owners face the dilemma of whether to choose a single contractor to complete their own remodel concept or whether to spend more for a design and contracting company such as Maughan Design. We have seen the results of high-end projects that demonstrate the disconnected, often unimaginative result of well-meaning self-educated home-owners and cannot help but compare this to our polished, professional result. The details have all been taken care of and the materials and components all work together harmoniously. The project lasted several months but we were given a detailed timeline that was followed to the letter. We were also surprised to find at the end of the project that we stayed within budget! Both speak to the professionalism of Kathie and her staff, and the budget planning that only comes with experience. When we set out to remodel our home, above all we hoped to achieve a warm, inviting atmosphere in which to live and entertain. Kathie, along with her staff and talented subcontractors achieved this result above and beyond any of our expectations.

I recently worked with Maughan Design & Remodel on an HGTV show and was very impressed with their talent, professionalism and work ethic. The scope of our project was our kitchen and family room. We found Maughan Design (owned by Kathie Maughan) extremely professional and highly customer focused. From start to finish, the project was well managed, highly organized and very thorough. The process from design to completion was very well executed. Throughout the process, communication with Kathie and her staff was exceptional. We are so pleased with the end result that started with an extensive interview process. That process helped Kathie and her team to understand how we functioned in our space, our likes and dislikes, and our goals and expectations for the final project outcome. Surprisingly, Kathie spent an extensive amount of time learning how we as a couple communicates, shop and make decisions. That too, was instrumental to make sure we worked well with her team. We found both the design and construction process very thorough, meticulous, detailed and creative. It was not overwhelming from the selection of materials, colors, appliances and space design. (This was a main reason we put off this project because it seemed too overwhelming to start.) Kathie’s team was very supportive. Communication and responsiveness was exceptional. At the start of every new construction phase, the project manager was present to clearly communicate job scope, schedule and expectations. We never felt alone or at odds through the process. Before any construction began, we had a thorough understanding of the budget and trade–off options for scope changes. We also understood with any renovation that surprises happen. The few that came up in our project were handled thoroughly and professionally. Not only were her talented staff were professional, respectful and pleasant; they were masters of their respective crafts. Their keen attention to detail brought many things to my attention that I would have completely overlooked. Our work site was left clean and orderly everyday. I looked forward to having this group come into my home and work every day. Working with Maughan Design far exceeded our expectations. Not only would we hire them again for a future project, we would highly recommend them for your remodeling project.

My husband and I first worked with Kathie to design a kitchen for our first home, a 1888 Victorian Farmhouse. You can see in the Maughan Designs "Preserving the Heritage" project album. Since then, we've used her to design a bathroom upstairs, as well helping us choose a paint color for the exterior of our house. For all projects, she was willing to work with us so we could DIY some of the project, such as painting and tileing. I think Kathie is an exceptional designer, whose experience allows her to work quickly and creatively, delivering huge value to a project. She is excellent at communicating design concepts, thinks aloud, and brings you along for the ride. She truly listens to understand, and incorporates our wishes while never compromising good design. She has been invaluable in bringing modern comfort our old home while staying true to the period.

Kathy and her team added a bathroom and closet to our attic bedroom space. Somethings that stood out about the experience: * From the beginning, Kathy was sensitive to our budget, suggesting practical solutions without compromising look or quality. She listened to our needs and delivered solutions which accomplished our goals. * We live in Seattle, and the project was in Portland. Kathy kept us up-to-date via photos and emails. * Selections of materials were done via emailed links to products that Kathy researched. Her taste is excellent and fit perfectly into our budget. * Kathy and her team were always respectful, punctual and careful. Her attention to detail and creativity were appreciated because we didn't have much face-to-face time during the project. All in all, working with Maughan Design & Remodel was an excellent experience.

I couldn't be more pleased with the knowledge, creativity, integrity, design, workmanship and follow through of Maughan Design and Kathie Maughan and her whole crew. The house, being built in 1967 had some construction surprises and complications as we pushed out walls and eliminated others while tying into existing heating ducts, plumbing and gas lines etc. Kathie had engineering reworked within hours and no issues with any of the City Building permit requirements. Her design choices and suggestions have given me a beautiful kitchen, beyond my expectations. We also made major changes to the family room abutting the kitchen and added hardwood floors to the dining and living rooms so the changes flow well throughout the home. Kathie listens better than any other contractor I have worked with over 20+ years of being in the Real Estate business. She is extremely efficient and a terrific business woman and contractor.

Maughan Design took my ideas for a kitchen/dining room upgrade and made them better and a reality. They did a great job understanding my vision and concepts and quickly provided me with ideas on counter tops, island remodels, cabinet refinishing, backsplashes, lighting and ceiling treatment. In particular, they gave me choices and a price list for consideration. I also appreciated their professional suggestions and eye for detail and design. They created an easy to follow project schedule, and their prep and construction teams were first rate, courteous, and on-time. They were very sensitive to my schedule and let me know when their were schedule changes, and they left a clean work site every day. Most importantly, they were professional and nice people to work with.

We couldn't be happier! We hired Maughan Design based on web reviews and they were just 8 blocks from our condo. We did a complete remodel in our kitchen, living area, and master bathroom. Kathie & Cortney understood our style & were outstanding in putting together materials. Cortney came by weekly to check up on things & to coordinate everything. Daryl and Cassie were the ultimate duo, there just about everyday and did everything from the demolition to the final install & clean up. Not sure my husband & I would have gotten through it without their patience & wonderful personalities (especially me because I was there almost 80% of the time, and we lived in the guest bedroom during project). These two were amazing to work with, hard working, very professional, and had excellent communication skills. We never wondered when, what, or why anything was happening, and we really appreciated them so much! Maughan Design is fortunate in that they have compiled an excellent team, making the 3-month long process for us pretty seamless. In addition to Daryl & Cassie, we were so happy with the electrician, plumber, countertop guys, and tile guys. After the remodel, we did some minor "decor" upgrades (new window shades, furniture pieces, rug, etc.) and again Kathie & Cortney did a wonderful job. We had some issues with the shades, but it was quickly remedied & we greatly appreciate the effort they put into making sure we were happy with everything. We highly recommend them and would work with them again in a heartbeat!

We hired Kathie (Maughan) after interviewing multiple contractors to renovate our loft in the Pearl District (original 1922 industrial building) from an awkward and chopped up office space into a place we could call long term home. Most important, our main home now is in Honolulu, HI and I needed someone I could trust long distance. I read many reviews about Kathie; most expressed their gratitude for communicating from distance, her attention to detail, and turn-key capabilities to do all work under a single contract. Her efforts were incredible including shipment of special reclaimed barn wood flooring from NY state, dealing with irregularities in sub floors, and most importantly, positively dealing with tenants in an office space below us that were impacted by the construction including falling debris and our plumbing that went into their space. A beautiful bathroom and laundry was also created including custom concrete countertops, deep Japanese style soaking tub, and creation of custom cabinets and doors from reclaimed truck bed wood (allowed only 4 pics for my review, so check out the 'Pearl District Yin Yang Loft Bath' on the Maughan main site to view the work). So unique and original; this place is now a gem. Kudos to Kathie & Maughan Design!

I highly recommend Cathie Maughan. She is a talented designer, and really knows her field. Years ago when I was working as a carpenter for a small general contracting company, we used Cathie to do the cabinet design for the kitchens and bathrooms in the high end remodels that we were organizing. I saw how fluidly she worked with different personalities, design challenges, and different budget ranges. She remarkable way of handling every challenge with a smile, and her creative problem solving is matched by her ability to think ahead and anticipate most challenges-- so that they never become problems. This year I decided to remodel my own kitchen. So, of course I called Cathie. I wanted to make and install my own cabinets, and she agreed to help me with the design. She came to look at my kitchen, and drew three possible designs on a napkin in just a few minutes. She helped me immensely, thinking ahead to remind me of important design considerations. With a relatively short design consultation, I was on my way to a great kitchen with a thoughtful design. Whether you are looking for design ideas, help with drawing a plan, or a whole kitchen built and installed for you, I highly recommend Maughan Design! Honestly, you are going to love them!

We had dealt with our aging, poorly designed 70's kitchen for long enough to know what we wanted when we remodeled. It is one thing to have some idea of what you want but an entirely different thing to know how to make it happen and do it right. Maughan Design was the perfect remodeler for us. We asked for new cabinets and appliances, refinished oak floors, improved lighting, better traffic flow, efficient work areas, baking center, broom closet, specialized storage, an island, recycling center and concealed areas for cookbook and message center clutter. We got the kitchen we hoped for only better. Without moving any walls, the expert crew at Maughan created 27 feet of useful counter space in the same room that before held only a very chopped- up 8. Traffic flow is ideal. The walnut topped island is beautiful and functions as extra work space or serving buffet. Work zones are efficient and easy to maintain. The team from Maughan really listened. They understood what we were hoping for and used their expertise to help us get the most out of our kitchen. They had sources and ideas that were exactly what we needed. The whole kitchen is now a clean, uncluttered Mission oak with red island cabinets. It is just beautiful and a dream to work in. So thank you Kathie, Clay, Cortney, Chris, Karen, and Ashley for all your hard work, which you did with grace and good humor. You were a pleasure to work with.

When i found Kathie Maughan, it was like I had discovered a new twinkling star in the universe. She took me by the hand and said, “go, that way,” giving me a gentle nudge down the path to building a new master suite, bathroom and laundry room to add on to my much loved home. When we were ready to sell our home, we had some extensive work that needed to be done under our house in regards to foundation issues. Kathie and team were fantastic to work with. The project was assessed and completed in a timely manner. They were pleasant, on time and transparent with all we needed to know for our project. Work included Kitchen, Bath, Plumbing, Electrical, Casework, Tile, Demo and various finishes We were long distance owners and Kathie and team went the extra mile to ensure smooth coordination. The design(plans) including product specifications were thorough yet easy to follow so we understood the work scope. A schedule was provided and adhered to- which in our opinion is very refreshing. A budget and updates on a regular basis were also provided- we always knew the project status and cost. Kathie and team dealt with all the little extras that invariable come up such as permitting, inspections and homeowners associations. The quality of the subcontractors on her team was excellent - no rookies. We highly recommend Maughan Design. The end product was first rate, on time and within budget and for long distance owners easy and seamless.

My husband and I have had all our remodeling in the last 7.5 years done by Maughn Design. We have had an office designed and built be Maughn Design that incorporated many elements unique to our needs, including cabinets accommodating our computer equipment, waste basket and a shredder all conveniently tucked into just the right places, off the ground and out of site. In addition the office space was designed to accommodate a Murphy bed, optimizing the space for multiple purposes. We have also had two bathrooms remodeled, book cases built and lots of painting. Kathy is very organized, presents exactly what will happen, when it will happen and what it will cost before any contracts are signed. She is reliable, good natured and very talented. We have been happy with her work and expect to continue using her in the future.

Kathy provided cabinets, windows, painting, plumbing, tile, some electrical work and some design work for our kitchen refurbishing. The basic design turned out well. The materials were good quality, and the workmen were thoughtful, courteous, and very competent. Where minor glitches arose during the course of the project, they were resolved quickly and to our satisfaction. We were especially impressed with the effort Kathy put into monitoring the progress of the project as it went along and the speed with which she got back to us when we had concerns, often calling or emailing after normal business hours. Kathy was a pleasure to work with and provided service well beyond what we had expected.

We hired Maughan Design and Remodel to complete a full kitchen remodel in our dated Lake Oswego home. We received new cabinets, countertops, lighting and had our wood floors refinished. We got all new appliances as well as moved them to facilitate a more functional work area. We interviewed 9 companies and chose Maughan Design because of Kathie's personality and her years of experience. Upon reviewing her portfolio we saw that she is able to adapt to any design style. Kathie has a real gift of being able to listen and decipher what it was that we actually wanted even when we really weren't sure ourselves. By asking lots of questions about how we currently use the space and what we would like to do she was able to design us a kitchen that was not only beautiful but functional. The project was completed within the time frame originally discussed. The budget was accurate and change orders were fully disclosed so we could make educated choices. She was able to save money in some areas so we could splurge on others. We actually ended up adding an additional room upstairs to the project as well as cosmetic touch ups to our family room. We work from home and having people in and out day after day can be a bit overwhelming to say the least. However, Kathie, her staff and all the sub contractors were always very professional, courteous and clean during the entire project. We look forward to working with Kathie and her team again in the future.

Last fall, we took on our first remodel project (master bath) and hired Kathie Maughan to work with us on the project. While we had the choice of just having her do a design for us, we knew we wanted the added comfort of having her handle all the details, and had her manage the project as well. This was a really good decision. Kathie made sure we felt comfortable with every phase of the project and worked hard at correcting any issues that came up. She checked in almost every day and was always available to answer my questions (even on a Saturday at one point). But beyond the pleasure of working with Kathie, is the pleasure of working with her wonderfully conscientious crew. They answered questions, explained processes and were unfailingly friendly and courteous. This is a great bunch of people to have come into your home and leave a beautiful space behind. We are truly pleased with the results and will use Maughan Design again in the future.
