MTH Design Group specializes in residential and commercial landscape design and construction. As a landscape architecture design / build firm we provide a single point source for taking site design from concept to reality. This approach helps bring a fluidness to projects as things transition from concept, through construction drawings, to bidding, and into construction. As a Landscape Architect led build team we can facilitate the flexibility needed to address the realities of construction while in pursuit of the goals developed while working very closely with our clients in the design and plan development phase. This close working approach allows the project to be a true reflection of the client and a response to the space and architecture. Typical projects consist of site feature design & construction, landscape design & installation, construction administration, construction documentation, AutoCAD drafting, planning & permitting, and any other aspect of the design and construction of the outdoor environment. We serve a variety of clients from individual homeowners, contractors, developers, builders, designers, and municipalities. We are licensed landscape architects and fully licensed, bonded, and insured landscape contractors in state of Arizona. We strive to provide thoughtful and well executed designs that meet a variety of project goals while developing something that exceeds our client’s expectations. Matthew Horne’s interest in the landscape started at a young age, he was able to work within the design, build, and maintenance industry through his teens and early 20’s. His passions developed as he received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from the University of Kentucky in 2005. Shortly after graduation Matt moved to Phoenix, AZ and was fortunate enough to work with several different landscape architecture firms on a variety of interesting projects of various scale and scope prior to founding MTH Design Group in late 2009. With a sensibility influenced by an upbringing in the pastoral landscape of central Kentucky with its thoroughbred farms, bourbon distilleries, and historic architecture Matt embraced the beauty of the southwest. The Sonoran deserts beauty and vast spaces only added to his love for the outdoors and he has enjoyed exploring this diverse state since making it home.

An initial free consultation to meet, see the property, and discuss thoughts and options will take place. Then a proposal will be provided to work with you as a designer in the development of your plans. Design fees vary based on the scope of work. My husband and I worked with Matt Horne from MTH Design Group on a pretty special backyard project, which had some challenging aspects including a large custom made pergola. Matt was exceptional to work with from beginning to end and our backyard is stunning. Matt is very knowledgeable and is an excellent communicator. He was easy to talk to and offered us guidance on design, plants, shade, water, maintanence, hard surfaces, raised gardens, lighting, gas fire pit, gas pizza oven, BBQ and a new watering system. I was very happy with Matt's invoicing system, it was easy to follow with no surprises. If something changed in the process or pricing, Matt let us know right away. All of the people who work with and for Matt have been easy to work with too. We started with a muddy mess after a sewer pipe collasped and we had to dig up the entire backyard. Matt turned a mess into a masterpiece that we are happy with every day, the final product is really beautiful. I have worked with other like-kind companies that did not perform or communicate as well as Matt did throughout and after our project was finished. We had a large complicated project, including sewer relocation, electrical relocation and a pool install. Along with that we had the entire grounds redone including tile, plantings, lighting, irrigation service relocated, drip system and pergolas. A massive project. MTH did the design and managed the install throughout the whole process. Matt and the team were responsive and diligent through the process and managed the surprises along the way well (hello there buried old septic tank). We're stoked on the outcome and looking forward to spending time outside over the entire year here in the valley!

Complete remodel of courtyard and back yard for a 1970's townhome Matt worked with us from conceptual design until the final completion of the project. During the design phase, Matt was accepting of our ideas and gave us professional advice concerning appropriate plants, materials and lighting. Demolition was quick and care was taken during demo; courtyard has lots of full length windows. Windows were completely covered; no damage. Job site was kept clean during all phases of construction. Project was started during COVID. Matt was able to obtain all the needed materials during a difficult time for construction. We are very pleased with the finished project that has added value to our home. It is difficult for an architect to design and build a project for another architect. Matt did a great job!

Matt and team helped me complete a major renovation to our outdoor living space. We basically blew the whole thing up and started from scratch. We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted in theory and Matt helped put it on paper, then bring it to reality. He was flexible all along the way and in making sure we got what we were wanting, while still keeping everything functional and appropriate for the AZ elements. Due to supply chain issues and labor shortages, this definitely took longer than planned, but we are very satisfied with our new space. Whether it's hanging out as a family, inviting friends over, or eventually posting our place as an AirBnB, there is no doubt that the backyard will always be the most enjoyable place to be. Thanks again to the MTH Design Group for their professionalism and attention to detail. We definitely have the nicest backyard on the block!

We found Matt through his exceptional reviews on Houzz so it's only appropriate that we give back. We first contacted Matt about a project around August 2020 and we knew right away with COVID and supply chain issues this project wouldn't be completed until mid 2021. The way our project turned out it was well worth the wait. Our yard remodel (front and back) that went from over 100 tons of excess dirt, dead grass and old tree stumps to something usable and beautiful. Matt and his team did an exceptional job at putting it all together. Matt was very responsive to all our questions during the project and we really enjoyed the personalized service that he gave us. Highly recommend Matt for your landscaping needs! We received several bids for our front and back yard landscaping needs and felt that Matt offered the best value. He was able to take our vague suggestions and create something beautiful for a fraction of the price of other quotes we received. We really loved the attention to detail and personalized service. Any issues we had were resolved without any problems. It did take awhile for everything to be completed but this seemed to be a universal problem with all of the other houses on our street who were all installing landscaping around the same time

Matt was an excellent find. My wife and I were planning a major renovation of our backyard complete with a new casita for her parents to move in. Due to the size and details we wanted in this project, we felt it best to work with a landscape architect to start planning everything out. Our intent was to leverage Matt for the design, but over time we realized that it would be best to have him do the implementation as well. There was a lot of brainstorming involved and we were very involved in the planning and layout resulting in several iterations to make the result fit our needs. We wanted to create a backyard oasis that allowed us to use the entire space throughout the year. Matt and his crew delivered. We now have a beautiful BBQ area, pergola with fire pit, a garden pathway with lots of plants to attract butterflies and hummingbirds, as well as have fruit to harvest. Our kids love running around outside and playing throughout the yard and we're enjoying the outdoor BBQ with family. We look forward to using the fire pit this winter. Now that the big part of the project has completed, and we've been using the space, we identified additional areas that need updated. We'll definitely be calling upon Matt to help finish up the next phase!!

Having recently moved across the country from Virginia to Arizona, we knew we wanted a more functional and attractive yard but had no experience in a desert landscape. I came across MTH Design Group's profile here in Houzz, and reached out to Matt and one other landscape architect. Matt got back to me in short order, and came over to discuss the project. Immediately I knew he was the one that we were going to hire to do the project. Unlike other companies that do this work, Matt personally oversees the entire project. When there are contractors here working, he is here inspecting or leading it. He served as the sole point of contact and was always readily available for questions via email, phone and text. The team he brings in to do the work were very professional, arrived on time and were very friendly. Here's the thing with Matt that I appreciated the most: he isn't pushy and doesn't try and upsell you on things you may not need. He always lays out the pros and cons of doing one thing over another. We ended up downgrading our lighting package slightly, but upgrading our irrigation system. And the end product is better than we could have imagined. We've got a great new (usable) and beautiful space that will require minimal water use and very little maintenance. Best of all, the work came in right on budget and right on time -- two things that never happen with these projects. I can't recommend Matt and MTH Design Group enough.

We truly enjoyed working with Matt and the MTH Design group for our yard renovation. Matt was amazing with coming up with multiple design options based on a variety ideas we had. The ultimate design we chose transformed our entire yard. It gave the yard a much needed facelift, and made our outdoor living space much more functional. The landscaping remodel included a new back yard patio, outdoor kitchen/bar completed with concrete countertop, new front yard sitting courtyard, entire new drip irrigation system, rock and new planting areas, tons of beautiful plants, and lighting! Matt was amazing at trying to keep us to our original budget and scope. He would have succeeded but we kept adding more items to the plan. Matt was very flexible when we had these changes and added additional items to the initial scope of work to be done. Matt is always available for questions and truly takes pride in making sure things were done correctly. We really enjoyed working with Matt on our front and backyard remodel. He was great about using what trees and plants we could. His design for our backyard remodel was beautiful, and incorporated so many succulents and cacti that are blooming like crazy right now. His designs are really lush, and even though many are still young, they're filling in nicely. I found his service to be responsive and accommodating, and his crew cleaned up after themselves nightly, and were very respectful of the property. He arrived when he said he would, or let me know promptly if there was a change in plan. He was helpful in choosing the right plantings for our yard, considering the exposure and the feel we wanted to get from the landscape. I would hire Matt again without hesitation.

Matt and MTH Design Group did an amazing job from start to finish. We were extremely pleased with the design. Our project required a full backyard remodel including an extended paver patio with lawn border, sod, new irrigation, and new plantings. The front yard included an extended patio, increased parking space, lawn border, irrigation and new plantings. Matt understood our desire to have a space to entertain, our practical needs such as increased parking, as well as our need to stay within budget. He was able to incorporate all of these things in to one beautiful design. Of course we had lots of questions along the way, and Matt was always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and explain processes. The team of installers were professional and knowledgeable. They completed the job within budget and on schedule. We were truly impressed by Matt's attention to detail and excellent communication with the installers. The installation was quick and of the highest quality. We quickly went from having the worst yard on the block, to the best -- by far!

Before diving into our back yard project, we had three people out for estimates. Matt was the only person who did a thorough review. Most importantly, he was realistic about the timeline. He said his typical process was to take six weeks before breaking ground. This ensured several iterations of the design and surety on the part of the client. To Matt's credit, he stuck to it, even when my wife and I (erroneously) wanted to move faster. Whenever Matt asked us to take time to consider, we made changes that ultimately created in a better result. Most importantly: I've worked with a lot of contractors, and this is the first time that a project has looked exactly how it was designed. Matt and his team showed up every day and executed our vision perfectly. I cannot recommend him and his team enough. Matt is worth every penny. I recommend him with great confidence and without reservation.

We hired MTH Design Group for a complete remodel of our front and backyard. Landscape and hardscape were entirely replaced save for the pool surface which was untouched and a few mature trees we kept. Throughout the design and build process, Matt from MTH Design Group was fantastic. He had a vision for the project but blended his expertise with personal preferences we had. The result is something we are thrilled with but couldn't have conceived on our own. He was patient and accommodating when it came to any requests or changes we had. He held his workers to high standards and was regularly on site to supervise, survey the progress, and take care of any issues as they came up. Of course if I ever needed him to come out and take another look at something he was there in a heartbeat. It was great to see that level of involvement from a business owner and it certainly paid off in terms of the quality of the end product and our satisfaction as homeowners.

We needed a complete remodel of our back yard. I found MTH Design Group on Houzz and was very impressed with the articles Matt had posted regarding landscape architecture along with his history/pictures of past projects. I did my homework and spent several months getting ideas and quotes from other contractors before contacting Matt. I had a general idea of what I wanted to accomplish: enlarge our existing patio area; use plantings to increase our privacy; increase shade on our southwestern exposed patio; add a BBQ area and a fire pit. Matt had great ideas and was very easy to work with. The scope of the project evolved over time and we also incorporated a pergola attached to our home; irrigation replacement and lighting to the initial project. Matt was very open to feedback and modified plans and dealt with HOA challenges to help keep our project on track. He has a solid crew that handles most of the landscape and patio work; but he will subcontract with one or two other professionals as needed. Matt acted as the general contractor and kept a close eye on every aspect of the overall project. Our outside backyard is awesome and our family and friends agree! My husband and I highly recommend Matt and the MTH Design Group! (I hope to add before and after pictures soon. )

Before finding MTH Design we talked to a 3 other landscape companies. We are happy we decided to move forward with MTH Design group. The processes was collaborative and he really took our feedback during the design processes. Once the design was completed we decided to continue using MTH Design with the build process as well. We made some changes while in the middle of build and he was happy to accommodate and he always made sure we were going to be happy with the finished product. We plan on working with MTH Design again in future for some additional projects as well.

Matt really did a great job of listening to what we wanted in a redesign of our backyard and the landscaping associated with it. This was a major project with demolition of an old spool, hardscape, and the patio, including its roof. The project required close cooperation among the pool company, construction company and Matt's group for landscaping. Matt had a very good eye for the terrain on the hill to the rear and to the curves and lines in the house and residual rear structure. The result was a redesign that fits aesthetically and practically.

We are extremely happy with the work Matt did for us. He designed our front yard and front patio, then saw it through to the end by stopping in on a regular basis and monitoring the work. He immediately responded to any problems we noticed and questions we had. Matt helped us to decide what the best cuts in the project would be in order to stay under budget, in a way that will allow us to get to them later when we've saved up enough funds. His crew was wonderful--they were very respectful, allowed my young son to "help", and even the neighbors came over to express their appreciation for the care they took to clean up and not mess up the neighborhood. Matt listened and adjusted and never once made us feel "stupid" for our lack of knowledge. This was our first project so we were understandably nervous! He got it done in time. We have had so many compliments and are loving the changes to our home. We adore sitting on the patio at night around our new fire table, or soaking in the southern sun in the cool weather. We can't wait for the plants to mature and show off their beauty and color--Matt has a great wealth of knowledge about plants and how to use them in landscaping. We planted 3 trees to provide shade and interest. We've already got him on the hook for our backyard makeover in the future--he's already got us excited about out-of-the-box thinking for that! Matt planned and executed the entire remodeling of my 35 year old backyard in Scottsdale. It was overgrown and had grading issues and just looked old and tired. Now it's absolutely gorgeous...my outdoor space has been brought up to the 21st Century! The new yard includes all new plantings, beautiful pavers, a new gas firepit, a raised vegetable garden and an area for fruit trees including lemon, fig, peach, grapefruit and orange trees and new yard watering system. The project was completed on a timely basis and Matt was here regularly to monitor the work and make corrections as necessary. He explained the plants, why he chose them, and what to expect as far as upkeep. He listened to my concerns and what I wanted in the yard, which was especially important. His contractors were courteous and left the job neat at the end of each day. The entire project was completed as promised and on a timely basis. Matt always behaved professionally and was fun to work with. Our next project will be the front yard!

MTH Design Group did an existing base plan in AutoCAD from the site visit to our home including measurements, plot plan, and photo inventory. In addition to the site visit, MTH came to our house numerous times for design visits and ultimately provided us with a landscape design plan that included all of the things we were looking for along with many MTH design features that were amazing. Unlike many of the "landscape design professionals" we contacted, MTH was professional, reliable, and extremely easy to work with. MTH worked within described timelines and pricing was very competitive. MTH not only did the landscape design, but also gave us a great price on having all the work done by his subcontractors - who also did a great job. We highly recommend MTH Design Group to anyone looking for landscape design and installation - we're sure you'll be as happy as we are!

We really wanted an outdoor space where our children could have some place to play, outdoor dining was a must, and we wanted to bring some trees and plants in to get that lush feeling while living in the desert. We are so pleased with the results. The overall process was very smooth. We had a few meetings to get the design just right. Matt has a lot of knowledge on what plants work for this climate so we totally trusted him with choosing the trees and plants for our space. We really wanted our backyard completed in time for our out of town guests and Matt made that happen. The deadlines were all met on time. There was an issue with our pool's auto fill getting disconnected and Matt had the guys out fixing it next day. We had a few ideas and Matt really made them a reality. Our backyard has now become an extension of our home and we couldn't be happier. We would recommend Matt to anyone looking to change their outdoor space.

After interviewing a couple of other landscape architects and remodel firms, we met and hired Matt with little hesitation. He was enthusiastic, thoughtful and thorough in the initial design phase and throughout the process. He is a one-man operation with subcontractors that he uses and trusts. So, you will get personal attention from him. Matt listened to what we wanted and was able to deliver a beautiful remodeling to our unfinished landscape within our budget and the strict parameters of our HOA and city NAOS areas that were designated on our property. Matt did a good job of blending the natural desert NAOS spaces with the rest of our property, incorporating new native low-water plantings and working with the mature plants and trees we already had. We had one minor issue with the density of the rock uses to top-dress the landscaping, but Matt listened to our concerns and addressed the issue to our satisfaction in a very professional manner. The information Matt provides about the plants used, their care and watering along with detailed plans of the property, the watering zones and timers, etc. was very thorough and professionally done. Overall, we are very happy to have chosen Matt and would have no hesitation in recommending him.

We contacted a number of firms offering landscape architecture services through out the Phoenix Metro area and found Matt of MTH to be not only the most responsive but also very competitive price wise. When Matt responded to our solicitation his introduction explanation of his design approach and philosophy was thorough and made us feel comfortable. His price point was also very competitive. On our first sit visit with Matt we spent several hours discussing our likes and dislikes and what our vision was for our yard. We also got an education about proper plant pruning here in the desert. The Matt's brings a long term planning element of what will work for not just one or two years down the road but 5, 10, 20 years. Matt took our suggestions and returned a near perfect plan after the first design review. We spent the next exchanges tweaking the master plan until we settled on what we feel to be the best possible solution for our space. Matt took our feed back on elements we weren't excited about, even when our own choices and suggestions led us to those results and patiently altered the design until we were happy. We would gladly work with Matt again when it comes time implement the design he provided for us.

I first contacted Matt Horne to help me with a renovation of my landscaping about a year ago. Because of my "snowbird" status, the install did not happen until March 2013. Matt was very easy to work with. He came up with some great ideas/designs for both the back and front yards. But just as importantly he patiently listened to our ideas and incorporated them into the plan. Matt provided a turn-key, one-stop-shopping experience. He arranged for and provided oversight for all the work to be done, to include installing pavers over an existing concrete patio, installing a new irrigation system and installing numerous new plantings. There was one small problem with the new irrigation system which he immediately attended to and fixed. All in all, a great experience. Quality work at a reasonable price.

We recently bought a 1974 model home at Squaw Peak Mountain; the house was once invisible to the neighborhood but now stands out. Working with Matt was a great experience. We purchased a bank owned property in much need of landscaping T.L.C. Since we were relocating from Michigan and had never lived in the desert climate, we were in need of someone very knowledgable in that area and easy to work with. Matt is both of those things. Bought a second home in South Tempe and wanted to remove all the grass in the small backyard and have desert landscaping. With a small budget ($13,000) Matt created a beautiful space which is also practical and low maintenance. Matt was a pleasure to work with - creative, professional and punctual. He respected our budget and never tried to convince us to revise it. He was very responsive when contacted with questions. There is nothing we were unhappy about - which seems incredibly rare to find these days when having work done on your house. MTH was hired to provide landscape design for our new home in Chandler. Matt designed the landscape for the front yard, courtyard and the back yard including the pool. Matt presented many interesting design concepts. I was particularly impressed by his fresh approach, his choice of unconventional shrubs and trees and his desire to have a 'natural' design instead of a very planned manicured look. His drawings and 3D renderings were perfect and allowed us to visualize the finished spaces very accurately.

We worked with Matt for approximately 7 months on the redesign of our exterior landscaping, lighting and pool remodeling project. Through many iterations, Matt was always patient, professional and positive. Though he didn't always love some of our wacky ideas, he possessed the creativity and flexibility to make them work or help us find a suitable compromise. Matt is highly responsive and maintains consistent communication and project status updates. He was able to coordinate with multiple vendors and still hit our very aggressive deadline. He is also honest and hardworking. Many nights he moved things around in order to accommodate our crazy schedules. My project , designing the back patio: landscaping, irrigation system, laying of pavers, lighting and a fountain that required a custom fixture which was created by an artist in Sedona. At night with water flowing down the face of the fountain which is lighted gives the effect of flames on the face of the fountain. During the work Matt was on site daily and upon completion was immediately reachable whenever I had a question. Deadlines and the budget were meet and I was given a detailed drawing of the completed project with instructions for maintaing the fountain and the irrigation system. Very professional.
