My family has had a series of remodeling projects accomplished by Plekkenpol Builders in Bloomington, Minnesota since roughly 1991. I can’t count any more how many there have been, large and small. The improvements have given us a great deal of satisfaction and is probably the main reason we’ve stayed in our original home. Becoming aware of Plekkenpol was a singular stroke of good luck. It started when I wanted more light as well as a sense of spaciousness in the kitchen and thought of raising the ceiling and having skylights installed. My Depression-era, construction-career father thought that was a terrible idea. “You’ll pay more for heat,” he said. “And they’ll leak. And….” He had endless objections. I decided to call the U of M for a second opinion and asked the general operator if anyone in the engineering department might be willing to discuss skylights. She connected me to a professor who gave an astonishing amount of his time to a caller out of nowhere. Turned out, he had skylights in his home. Brand and installation are key, he said. He told me which skylights he personally considered the best, and then added: but it’s installation you have to be careful about. That’s when I found out about Plekkenpol, and that’s when my family came to realize how important it is to have people who really know what they’re doing take charge of remodeling projects in the spaces that are so important to you and your family. At this point, there’s not a room in our home that Plekkenpol hasn’t remodeled. We keep coming back every time the house seems to need just a little more work.

After working with Plekkenpol for over five years and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on at least three different projects, this is not a review we expected to write. We have referred them to family and friends—three of those referrals have resulted in projects—and until recently, trusted them without hesitation. Historically, price transparency was something they were willing to provide. Unfortunately, something has changed. Most recently, we were quoted $30–35K for a relatively straightforward mudroom remodel and back door installation. When the formal bid came in at a single lump sum number over $40K with some modest scope additions, we asked for additional transparency into that singular number to understand how much each part of the project was costing so we could determine where adjustments could be made. We were told that a further breakdown of the lump sum would not be provided. Over the next two weeks, we removed multiple significant items from the project scope, yet the total price barely changed in response. We asked repeatedly for greater transparency to understand what was still comprising the lump sum price we were being quoted and never received it. At a certain point, the math just did not add up, and it became increasingly difficult to reconcile the number we were being quoted by Plekkenpol with the project scope. When we expressed frustration with the lack of clarity, the response was dismissive and unhelpful. We were told that regardless of project size—even on significantly larger projects—additional price transparency would not be shared and that we should trust them that we are getting the best price. To be clear, this was not about the money—it was about transparency and partnership. We simply wanted to know what we were being charged for. Because Plekkenpol would not tell us how they arrived at their lump sum price, we ultimately chose to end our long-standing relationship and move on. We recently recommended to another family that they consider Plekkenpol, but after this experience, feel obligated to advise them not to proceed due to Plekkenpol’s unwillingness to provide transparency in pricing.

We worked with Plekkenpol Builders on 3 projects with our home. The biggest was a partial remodel of 3 bathrooms and involved many decisions about what we wanted for the spaces. Our two project managers, Emily and Reno, were wonderful at helping us problem solve, describing what they could do to make the spaces more usable, helping with design decisions about finishes, colors, lighting and cabinetry options. I was so pleased when it was completed. Working with a talented designer and detail oriented project manager made the process go so smoothly. In all 3 projects I have to say the the "attention to detail" is really important and the quality of all the work was exemplary! I highly recomment Plekkenpol for any home remodeling projects, small or large. Our window replacement and painting project turned out so well the neighbors walking by were giving the painters compliments! And the deck railing replacement project has some repair work that needed to be done on the steps. Again the carpenter took great care and did a fantastic job. The details are important and Plekkenpol definitely delivers on that promise!

We had our entire main level gutted and remodeled by Plekkenpol Builders. (Kitchen, dining, entryway, laundry room, family room, and living room, from floor to ceiling). We can't say enough good things about this company. From the very first meeting (with sales pro Eric Mahin) to the final walk-through, they were professional and high quality. The caliber of their employees and subs are impeccable and they were all really nice people as well! Reno, our project supervisor was always positive, helpful and responsive to our needs. He can figure out a way to do almost anything. Erik, our main carpenter was such a hard worker and easy to work with. Plekkenpol may not be the cheapest but they are the best!! Elegance is attention to detail, and that's what we've come to expect from Plekkenpol Builders. There's not a room in our home that Plekkenpol hasn't worked on since our first project back in 1991. We wouldn't think of calling anyone else. It started with skylights in our kitchen. We'd heard stories of poor skylight installation, but we badly needed to let in some sunshine. Our kitchen was the darkest room in our house. So we phoned the University of Minnesota and asked to speak to someone who knew a lot about skylights. A professor there recommended not only a specific skylight manufacturer, but Plekkenpol Builders to install them. We're so glad he gave us that advice. Our latest project, just completed, opened our dining room to our expanded garden. The new windows create such a deceptively clear barrier that hummingbirds have flown up, trying to get in, and at least one robin made a head-thumping dive against the new expanse of glass. It's as if it's all one now, a green, blooming oasis that feels like a conservatory. It was exactly what we wanted. There have been many other projects in between the first one and our most recent, but suffice it to say our home has finally come close to its full potential, an achievement that's rare in life. We heartily recommend Plekkenpol Builders to anyone who wants things done just right.

We had a great experience with Plekkenpol doing a bathroom remodel. Grant is an excellent project manager. He did a good job at communication, troubleshooting and keeping things on track. The craftspeople were easy to work with . They seemed to take pride in doing quality work and respected our request to wear masks. The crews seemed to get along with each other and share the common goal of making things go smoothly. We plan on using Plekkenpol in the future

Plekkenpol Builders Inc have the experience to do the job right. They listen to their customers, but also have extensive experience in the remodeling field. They only take down walls when they can improve flow and make your house more livable. We are thrilled with our new first floor, especially our new island that makes our kitchen the centerpiece of our house. The entire Plekkenpol team is awesome - designers, project managers, carpenters, painters, electricians, plumbers, etc. The difference really is in the details. Plekkenpol does it right.

I've gone through quite a few remodeling projects on our home over 20 some years. Some great, some good, and some not so good. Plekkenpol was the best by far. On time, on budget, professional in every way, and just a plain joy to work with. From concept to completion they simply nailed it. We remodeled our master bathroom upstairs in our 1920's Edina home.
