About Us

It all started at the age of 13, our founder, Jeff Lostrie, transformed an 18” pine board into a mini bookcase using a band saw and four finish nails. Since, the team has grown. We’ve expanded to framing houses, building roofs, remodeling and additions, and custom furniture. With our portable sawmill, we turn salvage downed trees into usable lumber for building one-of-a-kind decks, arbors, and rustic pieces of furniture. After working on countless construction and remodeling projects and 30 years in the field under our belt, Santa Cruz Timber Works opened up shop. We have three phase power sanders, planers, saws, and a seemingly endless supply of wood to fill our warehouse. If you like wood, you’ve come to the right place. Because to us, that's what it's all about. New life for old trees. We use 90% salvaged or fell trees we mill ourselves in the greater Bay Area to build decks and arbors, custom furniture, and remodels/add-ons. With 30+ years of experience in the field, we also offer design and construction consulting. Slabs and custom wood furniture pieces available for purchase on our site.

In a sea of greedy contractors, you can't find someone like Jeff. We've never met anyone who comes multiple times for a very insignificant repair work to clean up someone's mess like it's his own house like Jeff. He never said a word about how much it costs. I had to literally use my own judgement (can be very off) considering the materials and the time he spent to Zelle money to him. He fixed a major leaking issue between a newly built pergola and the house gutter with a very thoughtful solution that involves multiple steps, along with a bunch of very small stuff, too small to waste his skills and no one else would even bother to get back to us with a quote :-) When we look for someone to help us in life, we're more looking for the character than someone with seemingly successful business (successful business sometimes can be deceiving). To us Jeff is our people. It's that simple. We're beyond grateful to Pablo the roofer who recommended him to us.

Hired Jeff for a second time. His selection of natural solid wood materials is extensive. (I saw his shop loaded with seasoned hardwoods in which to choose) Jeff guided me to a particular species of would that worked perfectly and he inlayed actual copper into the wood top to match my sink and faucet and I couldn’t be happier with the finished project, in my office.

Jeff and the team are incredible, simple as that. I had to do major, unexpected (surprise!) renovations to a recently purchased property and Jeff was there making things right from beginning to end. I literally could not have done it without him, or complete the job at break neck speed to get me moved in quickly. Along the way he also installed a brand new live edge redwood fire place mantle and a matching 10 foot floating redwood bay window bench. And all of this at reasonable and fair costs. I cannot recommend SCTW highly enough, and will definitely be using them again for future projects.

Jeff built our gorgeous ipe deck by the pool. The pool is organically shaped, so he had to cut the wood planks to follow the curves and edges. It looks fabulous! Jeff was easy to communicate and schedule the work with. He always showed up, stayed in the budget, and did very precise work. The patio looks so beautiful after 1.5 years, and it hasn't warped at all! Jeff also made a black walnut powder room sink slab for us. It's immensely beautiful as well! When other construction workers made a scratch into the slab, Jeff came to sand and refinish the slab and didn't charge us. I highly recommend Santa Cruz Timber Works!
