About Us

Why "inchoate"? | in.cho.ate \ in-koh-it \ | Inchoate comes from a Latin word for beginning. When something is inchoate, although you don’t yet understand what it is fully, you have a strong sense that it is indeed coming. It’s stronger than the wisp of an idea that never turns into anything. But it’s hard to really find the language to describe an inchoate idea. That’s the whole point: you don’t have the words for it yet! For us, inchoate means just beginning to form. You can have an inchoate feeling, like those first butterflies when you meet someone new. Or you can have an inchoate idea, like the earliest flickers of images for your masterpiece... We turn houses into homes, guiding clients through all phases of design and construction, helping with every step of the process from site analysis through schematic design and construction documents, from permitting to construction. My project was challenging to decorate, not being a terribly conventional space, but Inchoate always had great options and solutions at the ready, ideas which were able to evolve to meet the state of the project at every phase. Inchoate were always organized and ready to pivot when it was necessary, and I value those traits highly in a design environment. Emily and Stephanie were a pleasure to work with.

We wanted to build a ground-up remodel for an Age-in-Place home in a Craftsman style but with all of the modern tech features. We knew that this was going to be a big effort and we knew that we didn't want to build a "box" like so many other houses that we have seen. After a couple of years dedicated to identifying just what we wanted to do, how much it would cost and how long it would take, we selected Inchoate to not only design the house but to also oversee its construction. My wife and I are both Engineers so we knew the benefits of having an experienced Architect managing the General Contractor as well as being on-site to help deal with issues which crop up and resolve them in the best possible and timely manner. We also chose a highly recommended and local General Contractor who, it turns out, had an excellent eye for architecture style and aesthetics [and was a wizard in resolving problems as well]. It still turned out to be a handful for everybody: my wife and I, the Architects, and the General Contractor. In the end we have a wonderful home with so many of the Craftsman style features and color schemes and it has all of the luxuries of modern technology.

We worked with Inchoate for our one story addition starting in 2020 and all throughout the duration of our project. They helped us through every step of the process, and made it so easy! When our ideas continuously creeped beyond the initial scope of the project, they pivoted and added in our new ideas but with their professional eye. They answered all of our questions big or little and were there to guide us because we really were overwhelmed by the process of building an addition! Emily and Stephanie blew us away with their professionalism and their taste. The choices we made together made our home so fantastic! We learnt about Inchoate visiting an open house when we were looking for our current house. This house was remodeled by Inchoate and we really liked it. When we started looking for architects to do our remodeling we thought about Inchoate as the first option. Once we contacted them, and spoke with Emily and Stephanie we did not look more. We could not be happier with the job that they did for us. They presented different options to us based on what we told them we wanted. We loved all of them I must say! They are great at listening to what you want and what your style is, and really thoughtful about it. Emily and Stephanie are not only really professional about their designing job, but on the field too. They did a very exhausted follow up with the contractor company to ensure that everything was done right during the whole process. And they have been beyond helpful and available to answer all the questions and doubts we had. They were with us from the inception of our renovation and patiently worked through multiple drafts until we found the one that perfectly fit our vision and budget. . They helped us choose our wonderful contractors (TaylorSmith Sustainable Construction). Stephanie and Emily were very responvie via phone, email and in person. My wife and I had the opportunity to work with Stephanie on a recent remodel of our 1926 Spanish home. We added a 2nd story and did a complete renovation of the downstairs. This was a major project and selecting the right architect was extremely important. We sure are thankful to have made the right decision by working with Stephanie. She is a very good listener, detail orientated and was able to completely comprehend and make our vision a reality . She was awesome! Stephanie and her team are amazing! We remodeled our upstairs master bedroom and build a master bathroom. First things first, she is a master architect. I felt confident in the project from our first meeting. Stephanie really listened to what my vision was and helped guide me when I felt overwhelmed. She clearly and thoroughly walked me through the process of the entire job and made sure I understood everything. Her team was kind, warm, efficient and were great with any dealings downtown with the city. Stephanie at Inchoate was a great listener who re-designed our house and paid careful attention to the unique way we live. For example, my husband loves cooking and entertaining simultaneously. She took down old walls and opened up space so the kitchen became the centerpiece of the home, flooded with cheerful natural light and lots of natural, breezy beach cross-ventilation. The design was also quite minimalistic, which means the natural beauty and lines of the space are the centerpiece. She also swapped the position of the Master Bath/bedroom and the kitchen so that the master bedroom/bathroom turned into a private area in the back of the house that didn't require new plumbing - we used the old kitchen plumbing which saved us money. Finally, Stephanie has great environmental awareness and credentials - critical to us - and she found ways to minimize our foot print and be as eco-friendly as possible in the remodel. I highly recommend Stephanie if you want a careful, considerate, classy architect to help you with your home.

Inchoate did an excellent job remodeling my Venice duplex. The entire second floor unit was torn down to the studs and rebuilt. The old layout had several small, dark rooms, centered around a house that was mostly a master bedroom. Inchoate spent a lot of time understanding my lifestyle (entertaining and cooking are important) and delivered personal touches like an open kitchen and a floor plan that emphasized the light and air we get so close to the beach. By using a giant, sliding glass front door, Stephanie let us open the inside of the house to the large outside landing, making for a very big room that was partially outside. Inchoate also has a good understanding of sustainable materials. We had several conversations about windows, insulation, HVAC / air circulation / fans, etc. The bamboo floor they suggested might be more popular now, but was the first of its kind that I'd seen. The overall design process included a lot of discussions and a couple of design iterations. I appreciate the time they took to make sure I got what I wanted (even when I wasn't sure).
