I worked with Susan Cohan about 10 years ago on a smaller project when we lived in our first home. When we moved to our current home last year, I knew to call her right away! She recognized immediately the challenge she faced working on our property but took it on, designing a landscaping plan that met our needs - simple, classic, low maintenance, safe and maximizing the views we have. We love the final outcome! Susan remained involved throughout the entire year-long process. She coordinated the bidding of various aspects of the project. Each contractor hired was extremely professional and provided excellent service, a testament to her good judgment. Susan is transparent and honest, and I trusted her every step of the way.

After seeing Susan's work on Houzz I decided to contact her for an interview and initial consultation to discuss a complete replacement of the hardscaping and landscaping at my home. I met with several other potential designers and design/build contractors, and I knew following our first meeting that Susan was the right fit for me. I hired her to perform design and project management services. Susan prepared design documents for my review and approval and then met with potential contractors to discuss scope and pricing. Ultimately, she helped me select a highly qualified and professional contractor to execute the work. Susan had a sense of urgency surrounding my project that was unmatched by any previous professional that I've hired for work at my home over the past few years. She actively managed the contractor and ultimately delivered a beautiful finished product that exceeded my expectations. She gets my highest recommendations.

After a life spent in NYC, my wife and I decided to seek a different kind of life: one spent in an historic house with a sizable piece of property that we could make our own. We knew we needed the help of a professional to pull the outdoor space together for us. We had certain "must-haves" in mind: a big brick patio, perennial gardens, a fence to keep the deer out and to afford some privacy, and a deck that would integrate a hot tub spa. And we wanted to ensure that all of these needs would be met with great taste and with respect to the architecture of not only our house but of our neighborhood. Susan was wonderful and totally understood. She has exquisite taste and created a plan for us that incorporated all of these elements beautifully. She is communicative, helpful, friendly. At the same time she is not afraid to tell you what would not work and why. We highly recommend her.

Susan Cohan completely transformed our front and backyard into an outdoor oasis. Her design exceeded anything we could have imagined and the flow between the bluestone patio, pool area and children play space is perfect. The trees, plants and vegetation she chose was specific to our taste and matches our personalities to a tee! She not only is extremely professional and diligent, but a delight to work with as well. After an extensive search for the right landscape architect, we stumbled upon Susan's beautiful website. Within 5 minutes of meeting her, we knew that our search was over. Susan is efficient, frank and extremely knowledgeable. She listened to us and our needs and then helped us to imagine what our yard could be. She is extremely creative but utterly practical at the same time. For example, she designed a natural play area for our kids with stumps cut from one of the trees that we had taken down and rocks moved from other parts of the yard. She recommended a great contractor, worked hard to make sure the project started and finished on time, and provided good advice when challenges arose during the construction. We love our new yard and would recommend Susan to anyone!

Hired her again in April 2014 to design a new deck/patio and landscape . Susan designed a beautiful hardscape and landscape (patio and pathway) several years ago. This summer she designed an additional patio area close to our kitchen so that we could enjoy eating outside in a more convenient way. Susan is a pleasure to work with. She is creative and imaginative and at the same time she listens to our practical concerns and needs. The new patio area beautifully compliments the natural setting. She is extremely budget conscious and works exactly in the parameters discussed. During the entire process she worked quickly, efficiently and was always available for questions.

Susan did a great job working in my budget for an overall landscape plan and deck concept. She did several iterations of our deck plan based on various requirements by our zoning board and variance needs. She then recommended screening plantings when we were required to plant 12' high hedges next to the deck. Overall I am very satisfied with her work and how flexible she was.

Susan Cohan is knowledgable, creative, and very talented! She understands her customers needs and intuitively understands and interprets the tastes/needs/wants of her clients very quickly! She is a professional and we will continue to work with her!

Susan is the designer for folks who are reluctant to hire a designer for fear of: lofty attitudes, impractical design and sky-high budgetary expectations. Working with Susan is one of the best things we have ever done for our home and has proved to be a very wise use of our hard earned salaries in terms of preventing design errors, wasted do-it-yourself efforts and inappropriate plantings. Her advice is always forthright and has a clear point-of-view. She combines design/color creativity with an eye toward real-world use with schemes that are family and pet friendly. Unlike many professionals, there is an eagerness to take a long term and holistic view of projects and is more than happy to work with the client so that an otherwise unaffordable, large plan may be broken up over a number of years into manageable clusters. In other words, you know she will not disappear after the check is cashed! For our home, Susan has already redesigned our very tired, 1960's foundation plantings and has created a "courtyard" in our side yard--effectively creating an outdoor living room--replete with beautiful, colorful, and nearly maintenance-free, greenery. During that chunk of work last year, Susan was always very responsive and available by phone, email, or old-fashioned house-calls to tweak and help manage multiple contractors. She checked and rechecked progress and then checked and rechecked to insure our satisfaction with quality and the ever-strained budget. We're currently working on the next phase of design for a Westie-friendly back yard which has multiple must-haves: beauty, low maintenance, safety, privacy, a water feature, the ability to plant herbs, veggies and perennials--and of course--cook, eat and just lie around. By the way, this is a 1960's ranch style home in a nice suburb we're talking about here, not some mega-mansion with expansive grounds (although she has done those, too). Anyhow, it's a tall order, but we've got the plan designs and, once again, she has nailed it! That should say something about the versatility and depth of her imagination and experience. There is absolutely no hesitation here in highly recommending Susan Cohan. She is truly worthy of repeat business.

I have the highest regard for Susan's work. She designed the landscaping for my home twice. The first time was when we renovated our home and she did a beautiful job designing and installing our English garden look, complete with arbors, rose garden, winding paths and a stone patio. She again came to our rescue when we renovated an addition on the house and needed to continue the plan. Susan is easy to work with, listens and accommodating. She took us from design plan to finished product and continues to assist us with updates and changes as needed. She has a wonderful eye for design and her design is not run of the mill. You won't be sorry with her work.

Susan was instrumental in getting our pool project and landscaping for the pool in on time . she coordinated the plant and tree arrangements and recommended a lighting designer to provide a complete project. She is always professional and I would recommend her on any project.

Her choice of materials for the deck railing and paving are superb. The shrubs and plants are lovely. We particularly like that they bloom at different times of the year.
