DO NOT WORK WITH UIC - Building a house with UIC was the worst experience of my entire life. The design phase went well, but it was all downhill from there. Once construction began, I noticed errors left and right. Windows would be missing, doors and walls were in the wrong place, etc. I had to micromanage them to get the house built correctly, because they did not notice the errors. For instance, I had five mirrors to be installed, and 4/5 were installed in the wrong rooms! They pushed my closing back seven times, from mid December all the way to late April, making planning my move nearly impossible. But the worst all happened after I moved in. The punch list at closing had over 30 items on it. After moving in, I noticed the poor quality of the house and parts of the house were already falling apart (Holes in the roof, doors not opening or closing, multiple windows leaking, door leaking, uneven floors, missing flooring in places, major circuit issues, lights not working, water lines not hooked up, windows left shattered from construction, and more). On average it would take UIC six months to fix any issues. Some issues took over a year! UIC would ignore my emails and calls 90% of the time, and working with them was nothing but frustration and disappointment. Do not work with UIC. Once they have your money, you will move to the bottom of their priority list if you are lucky or simply be completely ignored.

This company was great to work with and most things went very smoothly. They worked with us to fix the things that didn't.

UIC is a charming firm. Small enough to feel personal, large enough to have good resources and infrastructure. We built a new home with them in 2018/2019. The design process was fun. We put together a Pinterest board of ideas we liked, and then the UIC designers brought samples of products we might like. We met weekly for a month or so to put the design together. They provided a price sheet, so there was clarity through the planning process. From the time we signed the consent to build to the day we closed on the house, six months passed. The team communicated pretty well through the process, and they were responsive to our questions and concerns. Overall, I would definitely recommend UIC.

Excellent company. They renovated my 1920s era town home. Dedicated and knowledgeable about building green homes, UIC placed lots of care and attention to detail into renovating my home. They listened carefully to what I wanted and their architects came up with a design that suited my tastes and needs. They are also dedicated to building a community, not just dropping houses in empty lots and collecting a profit. I would highly recommend them for any project that requires vision and ingenuity.

UIC worked with us to design and build a custom kitchen from different source materials. They met with us several times during the planning stage, worked quickly, and responded to our wants and needs along the way. This was a complete kitchen redo. Ceiling, walls and floor were torn down to the studs and joists. They also took out a door, turned it into a window, and took out interior stairs. We were thrilled with the finished project. Fully functional, modern kitchen.

UIC/CDO built my partner and I our dream home. It was a 100% custom project suited to a trapezoidal urban lot. The house is filled with unique touches that came out of a design/build collaboration that lasted about 20 months. I'll never build another dream-home - too stressful. But I'd recommend UIC/CDO to anybody who wanted to build theirs.
