a not so big addition - the exterior
The existing 1970's era neo-colonial's kitchen area was expanded with a 5' x 26' cantilevered addition. This addition, with a new steel beam to support the 2nd floor buried above the ceiling line, was cantilevered so there's no foundation. This allowed us to save the tree directly outside. Visit

The kitchen addition connects with the rear green space and floods the room with natural light through large horizontally banded, counter height windows. Formaldehyde-free painted cabinetry with countertops made of resin coated recycled paper are easily maintained and environmentally sound. Photographer:

I notice the window is close to the countertop, how are the electical outlets placed on this side of the kitchen?
I would recommend the space between table edge and wall be a minimum of 30". I would say you need a minimum of 60"-66" of space between kitchen counter and table edge in order to accommodate someone sitting at table (allow them to get up and move about) and another to work at the counter. You

Cut-out from dining room to kitchen
With the exception of the kitchen addition, the majority of the work on the parlor level was restorative work — from the original trim and molding to the ornate leaded windows seen here.
This is a smart detail for this grandly scaled dining room. The addition of a clear and opaque stained glass transom supports the palette and the size of the room. Stained glass that features pattern and not color can be

a not so big addition - the kitchen
This kitchen remodel to a 1970's era neo-colonial included a small, 5' deep addition. This was all the space that was needed and was dictated by the existing tree that we didn't want to take down. The addition was cantilevered, eliminating any foundation work that would have affected that tree roots
Do they open (casements?)? We've got a 41" x 120" rough opening for a nice long kitchen window in a new addition to an old stone farmhouse, and I'm having difficulty figuring out the most attractive way to have lots of light, but balancing it with the traditional look required.

This kitchen went under an enormous transformation through a 75 square foot addition and the relocation of all three legs of the work triangle; sink, refrigerator and range. Previously, the work triangle used three of the four walls of the kitchen and consumed basically the entire floor area. To accommodate
