so big addition - the exterior
neo-colonial's kitchen area was expanded with a 5' x 26' cantilevered addition. This addition, with a new steel beam to support the 2nd floor buried above the ceiling line, was cantilevered so there's no foundation. This allowed us to save the tree directly outside. This kitchen remodel to a 1970's era neo-colonial included a small, 5' deep addition. This was all the space that was needed and was dictated by the existing tree that we didn't want to take down. The addition was cantilevered, eliminating any foundation work that would have affected that tree roots

The kitchen addition connects with the rear green space and floods the room with natural light through large horizontally banded, counter height windows. Formaldehyde-free painted cabinetry with countertops made of resin coated recycled paper are easily maintained and environmentally sound. Photographer:
All the kitchen windows are by Loewen, and are aluminum clad wood window units. There are 3 primary units comprised of a large fixed picture window above or below 2 operable awnings. Each awning has a hand crank operator, located at their bottom "sill". The 3 units were ordered as "factory mulled units"

An island on legs also works well if you’re trying to fit an eating area in a smaller kitchen. Additional furnishings bulk up a space in general, but they'll work if you choose leggy pieces.

Paint it white and let in the light. Unadorned windows bathe this kitchen in natural light.
This kitchen’s addition is likely too narrow for a typical dining table and chairs. However, it’s the perfect size for a cozy kitchen lounge.
