I concur with open shelves instead of upper cabinets, and a farmhouse sink. And then maybe just create a smaller cased opening instead of that awkward door. Great door though. Good luck!

Try deleting all overhead cabinets especially the one over the breakfast bar. Cut back the corner cabinet and replace the stove with a 900 wide upright stainless steel cooker and a stainless steel canopy range hood.replace the bench top and splash backs. Replace or paint the doors white personally I would repaint them. It's too good a kitchen with too much storage to start again. I agree with spend your money elsewhere!

I like the ceiling, French furniture piece, chandelier and colors in the "elegant drapery" one, but the draperies are screaming 1980's cheap. The Victorian is lovely. The modern in the bright red, yellow and blue is OK in small areas.

I could never find a pinboard I liked (to purchase anywhere) -- they were all too small, and too plain. I decided to make one myself out of plywood, rolls of cork, and fabric. I'm still in love with it every time I walk into my craft room / office. It's 4 feet wide and 3 feet tall. :)

What Is Organic Architecture, Anyway?

Hey Sigrid, your questions are probably rhetorical, but I thought I'd reply anyway! -

I think the sail like thing in #5 you are referring to is the roof. The roof on the Bavinger House starts wide and low, and spirals upwards. At the centre of the spiral it breaks free from the walls and lifts upwards toward the sky. This helps to define the roof as a separate element, and effectively breaks the masses of the building down. When I visited, the roof seemed to float in the air which was a wonderful effect.

Pic#1 is abrupt, but I found it remarkably appropriate in its Albuquerque location. As I was spiked and scratched by the native vegetation trying to get that photograph the sharp and jagged lines seemed very appropriate. My impression of New Mexico was of harsh and jagged landscapes. The sharp lines also blend well with smooth curves in the centre of the building,

I included Pic#2 of the Ford Residence to show the locally sourced coal. That side of the house faces a street corner, but on the other side the house is all glass with views over a back yard. The house was built from recycled Quonset Huts salvaged from the Second World War. The ribs from these huts were arranged in a radial plan, which gives the house its dome like shape... oh, and the ceiling in that house is lined in hemp rope just as bimse suggested!

I have plenty more photos of these houses and some more descriptions of them on my website if you are interested.

HI -- Because of the age of the house and the brick - if the brick was exposed the process might deteriorate the brick . So I think this house would look real cute painted a pretty yellow with white trims on the windows and then black or a black/navy shutters and on the porch railing and post Then have a pretty red door . Love that color combo and your cottage style house would be perfect for it ..

@ carriebowm, thanks for the post. Regarding your comment about contemporary (modern) I would fall into the latter camp, believing it is timeless.
Here is an article I wrote re: that issue:

@sabickler, good observation, I think a sufficient argument can be made for running the planks in either direction...
