I think it's important in our country that we work toward people having the "Right" to build their small, dream home. So many areas have such strict building requirements that smaller dwellings aren't even allowed. Many of the areas I grew up in require that a home be at least 3,000 sq ft and minimum lot sizes are huge which alone can make it economically unfeasible to build a smaller dwelling upon. I think that lot size requirements should be better tied to dwelling size. Why does a 1200 square foot house be forced to have an acre, half acre even a quarter acre lot? Why can larger lots be split when smaller dwelling are desired upon them? In many ways we have limited smaller dwellings to those who live within larger cities and land is expensive but people who live in moderate and low cost areas shouldn't have to own a lot of property in order to have a small house.

Tammy, I think it really depends on the other metals that are in your room, if any. Polished nickel would look beautiful or even a brushed nickel or chrome. Polished Brass is always beautiful on a black door but right now it's just not as popular. It's still the most traditional metal though.

This article was spot-on for my husband and me. We are renovating a home we recently purchased and want to connect the Great Room with the full length Screen Porch that runs along the back of the house, especially when we are entertaining. You've told us everything we need to know and tell our designer and contractor to make an informed decision - thank you!

I love my reclaimed barn wood kitchen island. White oak planks harvested from a salvaged Minnesota barn. I think I like it better than granite.

Christian, your wifi camera idea made me wonder if that would work for checking in on a senior parent, too.

We have rented from VRBO for years, and loved being in a HOME. We choose a different one each year. I'd hate to go back to a motel or condo, as it is sure sweet being in a furnished home, next to a cool vacation spot. We use google earth to verify the settings, and see what's around, to get great locations! Pictures and feedback help with the decision. Glad there's people willing to rent their vacation homes!

Cathy, you're right, the wifi cameras are great for a senior parent. I looked after my grandfather who had Alzheimer's for a couple of years before he passed. I was able to monitor him while I was at work via the cameras. Because they also have speakers, I could talk to him, "Grandpa, don't scratch your head!". He would say, "Oh, Ok." and it was very helpful. I could also check in on the other caregivers. Finally, it's also good for kids at home, baby, teens, etc... No more raging parties (at least in the living room) when the folks are away for the weekend.

Capeanner, it's true that it may be a little creepy for some to have the cameras in house. But if you had the camera recording inside the house and someone broke into the home while you were away, you'd be glad you had the evidence. Same with the garage, you could see who took the power washer. I guess everything is a compromise at some point, and is part of a larger discussion about privacy vs. security.
