I hired Brooks Landscaping 4 years ago after moving into a brand new NYC apartment that has a bi-level garden in the back. It's a large space for a backyard in NYC being 3 brownstones wide. The builders had given very little thought to landscaping the property. It actually had a jail yard feeling with it's plain cement walls and pebbled ground. The pebbles didn't make it very inviting to sit out there. My yard looked onto 3 very unatractive yards. I immediatley liked Brook upon our meeting. He has a very laid back way about him. We discussed my ideas and he came back a couple of weeks later with plans and drawings. He really implemented what I asked for. I wanted privacy so he designed and built a beautiful fence that the other owners in the building thanked me for because it improved their views as well. He replaced the pebbles on the upper level with flagstone which is a huge improvement. I wanted the planting to be lush with a feeling of over grown.. Brook gave me that as well as planting ivy which has almost covered all the ugly cement walls I'm VERY happy that Brook Landscaping did the job and at this point I can't imagine anyone else maintaining the yard.

Brook Landscaping et al., were the absolute best decision we have made in our entire Harlem brownstone renovation process. While I'm not at all unhappy with my building general contractor or how the house turned out, I certainly got used to an acceptable level of compromise and "ok, that's fine, I guess" during the lengthy process. That is, until we started renovating the backyard/garden. From the very first meeting with Brook Klausing, sitting in the backyard, we felt heard, considered, involved. Communication continued to be immediate and amazingly easy with Brian Green who oversaw the project. The one and only time there was a misunderstanding (due to interpretation, no one's fault) they made it right for us without hesitation. The workmen (craftsmen is a much better description) who carry out the design are as lovely as they are talented. I may sound like I know these guys on a personal level but we only met them when we called for a consultation. I've done A LOT of home and garden renovations with many contractors and I can say, with all honesty, this was the best, easiest and most bang-for-the-buck hire I have ever made. Brook Landscape: extremely professional and true visionaries when it came to re-doing our outdoor area. We were left with a beautiful new space for lounging in the sun, surrounded by lush plant life and even some visits from Brooklyn honeybees!

I hired Brook Landscape to renovate my Ft Greene Brooklyn Brownstone backyard. After interviewing multiple designers, it felt like Brook understood where I wanted to go and the ins and outs of construction. We ended up demoing and renovating the whole back yard except for strategic assets to the space that added value and saved money. We added a new patio, fence, fountain, plantings and decking. They used a fixed rate for design services and delivered within the original budget of 60k we agreed upon for construction. I felt comfortable with his team working in my home and the respect given to protecting my house. Our criteria were cost, commitment to quality work, and trustworthiness. Of all the landscapers we interviewed, we felt Brook and his team had the best combination of these important qualities. As the project progressed, we never worried about their commitment to a safe work environment, a commitment to work to building code, and to budget, etc, we fully trusted them in our home. We were so happy with their work, that we re-hired them for our roof terrace, which has been shown on your site. In sum, Brook Landscape is definitely worth very serious consideration for any garden renovation. We recently moved into a Brooklyn brownstone with nothing but a patch of dirt in the back yard, and after a few consultations with other companies we hired Brook Landscape to create a green backyard space. Having recently dealt with a slew of different contractors and experienced the usual contractor issues, we were definitely wary of yet another one. Here's how it went (short version: BROOK LANDSCAPE DOES INCREDIBLE WORK): SCOPE: 80' x 20' backyard. Leveled ground and installed substrate/foundation, flagstone and cedar decking, cedar steps, reclaimed slates for pathways; created multiple green areas with trees, shrubs and grasses, installed automatic irrigation system. DESIGN: We went through several iterations of Brook's original design, which we liked but wanted to fine-tune. Brook was very responsive to our needs/concerns, and tailored his design to our budget, while actually giving us more than we asked for (and surprising us with features we didn't even know we wanted). COST: Because Brook has done a lot of high profile design work, we were ready for a steeper quote, but the cost was well within our expectations for NYC (and lower than a number of other estimates); after the job was completed it felt like a bargain. EXECUTION: Flawless. The crews were knowledgeable, detail-oriented and conscientious to a fault; they showed up exactly when they said they would, from initial measurements with Brook's two architects, to final touch-ups by the carpentry and landscaping crews. They cleaned up every single day and in general performed like professionals who love what they do (big shout out to Brian L, Brian G, Scott and John for the amazing work). Job was completed ahead of schedule, and Brook did a post-completion walkthrough to check the work. We were thrilled overall with the results, and plan to hire Brook Landscape for Phase 2 of our backyard project early next spring.
