The polka dots are bees and they are actually larger than they look in the pic.

I would like to make the room look kinda Georgian/ english country however I agree that it shouldn't look too victorian or grandma-ish. I agree that red damask of velvet wouldn't be the best choice either

I love the chair you just posted with it. Go with blue and white, it will be fresh and still elegant and relate to your beautiful blue and white porcelain. The red in the rug will tie in to the other rooms.

There are many beautiful blue and white Chinoiserie patterns available.

I'd recommend pulling out one of the minor colors from the rug for upholstery....i.e. gray, green etc. rather than the rug's dominant red or blue. Or a restrained print or stripe where the rug accent color (say gray) is dominant and a rug-dominant color (say navy) is the accent.

The blue and white fabric is beautiful, and color-wise it's a Go, but scale and pattern-wise I don't care for it near your rug.....certainly not as a major upholstery or curtain fabric. The rug has a powerful pattern and the fabric is just too close in scale and mood to it.....looks like it tried to match but didn't. Perhaps the pros can explain this better.

You don't have to have blue walls to use the blue and white fabric, so the room will not appear overly blue if you're looking to avoid it.

I see what you're saying about it looking too "matchy matchy"

Crossed posts...have you Googled blue and white Chinoiserie fabric? So many from which to choose.

I'm definitely trying to avoid the room being all blue however I would like to have enough blue to include some of our blue/white porcelain. I would also like to have a lot of red because it would match with the rest of our first floor which has a lot of reds and golds and hints of blue.

I have, however they are usually either very expensive or they are from a blog or Pinterest where they really don't tell you where they are from.

Like bluenan said, the red in the rug is enough to relate to the other rooms.

I just saw the prices and.... Wow. The last one is $130 a yard... Pricey but somewhat doable. The other one was 200 dollars a yard so... I don't that one will work

The Ralph Lauren fabric has such a big repeat that to center the image on the chair you might have a lot of waste, making it even more expensive.

Yes and I do hope to be a designer one day! My mom and me are redesigning our house right now and she gave me the task of finding new fabric for the dining room chairs. I also picked out the rug too after seeing it and begging for it for over two years she cracked and we bought it

I am practicing I guess by redoing my house. My mom trusts me with much of her designing needs and I try my best to make our house look great. However, this room... Most of this room is from before I got into design so now that we are sick of how it looks, she has put the task of making it look awesome in my hands lol

another thing is that i want to stay true to the chippendale style of the chairs. As in, i don't want something super modern or really geometric because ithink it would clash with the style of the chairs

Sorry Joe, that fabric was on Ebay and no longer there. I was really just showing examples that came up after a quick Google search of "blue and white Chinoiserie fabrics". There are tons of other nice choices.

I definitely like the idea of a chinoiserie pattern for the chairs. We were originally looking to using chinoiserie wallpaper but we've decided not to. I think it'll be a great way to add a little bit of that into the room

I have quite a few oriental rugs that I brought back from when I lived in Hong Kong along with furniture. I change their locations from time to time. The one that is usually in the dining room is an antique Persian in deep jewel tones - mainly dark blue and red. I have 2 sets of cushions for the dining room chairs one is a white damask with a subtle pattern in gold and the other is red silk with embroidered Chinese dragons scattered on the red background. I would send photos but I am not at home. They work. I would say look for something with some pattern and texture to stand up to the bold patterns and colors in the rug. Be brave! My walls are beige and the curtains are weighty in a broad vertical stripe that picks up the colors in the rugs. Hope this helps.
