Looking for styling tips for living room

I would really love some tips on giving this room some 'wow' (or at least like it could have been put together by a pro). I'd love to go for a beach/Coastal feel, and I love teal colourings. I'm stuck with the brown couches, but would like to get a new rug. I have small children though, so could anyone recommend a colour/style that would look good, but also be really durable and not easily marked?

Could you tell me if the artwork is working or if it should different? Also I am open to feature walls, but wouldn't want anything that could make the room too dark (as the room doesn't get a lot of light from mid morning). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! I love the art work. Since u are stuck with the brown couches you need some light colors to add, so add some yellow pattern pillows or a yellow rug.. Yellow seems bold but goes really well with the blue color palate. Add all different types of blues and yellows doesn't have to be the same exact colors, maybe get a end table that doesn't match anything. A random color.. If you can't find one you can always paint it. White would be nice. The only dark color should be your couch.

Please move the art to the right so it is centered over the sofa rather than centered on the wall. Then, a light, neutral sisal rug or a rug incorporating those teals would be great.

Move the art per Ann's suggestion and lose the torchiere in the corner. Replace it with an end table with a modern lamp. Your rug is a big brown monolith in the center of the room. You need something lighter if you want a coastal feel.

Your second photo doesn't enlarge, so I can't really see how the furniture relates to the TV, but it seems to be about as far away from it as it could be. I would try floating the furniture in the space with the couch facing the TV and the loveseat facing the windows.

Pull the loveseat and sofa corners away from each other a couple of inches. The art relaxes the loveseat and sofa color and just needs to be brought over toward the right more to center with the sofa. A lighter textured rug would also relax the furniture colors. A seaglass paint color lighter than the artwork would be a good addition. If you would like a feature wall - you could always have a faux artist paint a dramatic theme using the corner where the walls meet or add a water feature towards that corner. If you want to use a darker painted wall as a feature wall - based on the pictures (the middle picture is not enlarging) I would go with either the wall to the left of the art wall or the wall with the white cabinetry on it. Keeping with this plan, silver pillows, with some texture and even beads would be a nice touch. If you add a cocktail table, I recommend it be small, metal and a glass top.
    Good luck.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful advice. I appreciate it so much. Unfortunately I can't switch the couches as where they are currently placed they are the same length of the walls (I will take a better photo to help explain and put up soon. So sorry about the photo not enlarging, hopefully this one works better.

Groveraxel, thanks for taking the time to put that pic together for me. I love it and it has given me a good idea of the kind of rug that could work. I thought I might have to go something very plain, but it's good to see that I could try a pattern like that. I'm in Australia and will look into the sites u mentioned.

So glad to get the feedback on the artwork. I will move it over and repost.

lisa, now that I can see the TV wall and slider, it looks like you could easily get a bit of coastal feel in this room even with brown sofas. You've made a good start with the white wicker baskets.

Here is that wall with a few accessories. Keep them simple and light, and choose one or two larger things--tall candlesticks, clamshell bowl--rather than a bunch of little stuff that will get lost. Blues, greens, and any natural color will work. Avoid clutter.

I don't know if you have enough space, but I would really like to see the whole seating arrangement pulled up toward the TV and over toward the slider wall so it floats in the room. If you can do this and still have ample room to walk behind the sofas, your room would look more cohesive.

This will look odd because my program can't really move furniture, but you can see I've moved the rug up and over a couple of feet, and then pulled the furniture with it.

I think the first step is replacing that rug - too much brown! The one Groveraxle put in is perfect - plays in with the blue yet gives the room some pattern & texture. Great ideas all around! I love the art, too. You're going in the right direction with the accent pillows pulling from the art piece. :) You have a beautiful room!

Thanks shakuff! Glad that the art is a winner, I really do love the colours!

Groveraxel - you really got me thinking! It's great! I tried moving the couches around this morning to push them closer as you suggested. But no matter which way I tried it doesn't leave me enough room for a pathway behind them. This room is basically the centre of the house, connecting the bedrooms on one end to the kitchen and dinning at the other, so it's a main thoroughfare. So unfortunately I'll have to leave them against the walls to keep it an easy space to walk through. I'll attach a couple more pics to help explain. It's a shame, as I see what your saying.

I have moved that artwork to be centred over the 3 seated and it looks great.

I love the suggestion of losing the torchiere (a new word for me), and am on the hunt for a new lamp. Might show you a couple to get feedback if that's ok.

    Thanks again everyone. :)

Here are some lamps and a rug I came across, that I thought give the beachy feel. I quite like them. Is the rug too plain? Would pattern be better? I like the plain (but it was my bad choice of a brown rug that got me into this mess so I don't trust myself! Haha)
Oh well, it was worth a shot. I was afraid you wouldn't be able to float the furniture. The art does look much better moved. Now a proper lamp with some height in that corner to balance the wall is all you need. (Well, that and a new beachier rug.)
I like the rug. It does have a beachy feel. And I very much like the driftwood lamp. Here are both lamps with the rug. If you get this rug, I'd do a coffee table with a teal objet d'art on it.

That's fantastic. Thanks so much Groveraxel! I love it. I will get to shops when I can and put up a pic when it's all complete. :) thanks!

Love the accent wall that doctornancy suggested, and the glass coffee table. For the area rug try an indoor outdoor, they come in beautiful bright colors are asy to clean and don't fade.

Wow Doctornancy, you've really given me something else to think about. Thanks so much for taking the time to do that - it's quite a leap from where I thought I was headed. My only worry is making the room dark, and I think I'd like to go with a 'light, airy, coastal type feel' (which is odd I know as I'm keeping the dark couches). It's really a cost thing - I don't want to invest in new couches right now while my kids are young, but when they are older ( and less likely to mark /soil them) I hope to be able to buy a lighter couch that will fit in better with room. I will take some time to give it some more thought. It's great to have visuals like that to get a feel for the different ways rooms can look.

And thanks Carmel decor, that's a great idea. I will look into those rugs. Some really nice suggestions there.

Hi there. For a beachy feel, try a wicker rug. These rugs are durable and, given the different materials (and colors) in it, are not easily stained. As for a coffee table, I would go with something simple with a seashell centerpiece.

Hi houzzers, thanks again for all your advice. I just wanted to share a pic of the rug I bought today. It happened to be on sale, it has a nice feel to it, and if it gets marked by the kids I think the colours in it should hide it relatively well. There are still plenty of pieces I need (coffee table, lamp, beachy ornaments which will come in time as I save up), but for now here's the new look (with a few ornaments I already had in other rooms). I think I need better quality cushions too, so I'll put that on the shopping list too. If anyone sees anything that's not working or anything else I need, I'm happy to hear your thoughts. Thanks again!

This is a small change, but I wonder if you can move your white vases that you have next to the couch on one side of the TV credenza, and the blue bowl that's in the middle, on the other side...so you have items on both sides of the credenza. Just a thought, not sure how it will end up looking.

Also, your rug might be a tad small. It looks fine the way it is, but might look better with a slightly larger one that extends slightly more than the size of the couches.

I think once you get a coffee table and some more blue accents for the FR, and a lamp, it will look perfect!

The rug could be a wee bit larger, but it looks great in the space. Great color and texture and does give that beachy feel.

I like the accessories you have and the way you have them. Please don't go overboard with little tchotchkes; I think the white vases with reeds (which I usually don't like, but yours are not overdone) and the blue bowl on the media cabinet are just enough.

When you get a coffee table, do a single coffee table book, and/or a single object.

You really could use something behind the loveseat, something that doesn't compete with the painting on the other wall. Let me see what I can find.

The 5 sea fan prints are $44 from one etsy seller, though if you're diligent you might find them for less. They're 8 x 10, and the 9 x 11 frames are $5 each at Ikea.

Thanks for the advice bubbles0208 and groveraxle! I will look into a bigger rug as you suggest, I see what your saying about the size.

Groveraxle, I love your suggestion about the art over the love seat! I had been looking at that wall and corner and felt there was so much bland space (hence why I tried the reeds in the corner), and I didn't know what the 'rules' were for art on two close walls like that. But your suggestion is perfect. I am on the hunt now. I will come back when I have a few more of the pieces in place. :)

Can anyone help me figure out what coffee table would work in this space? A glass one has been recommended by a few people, and I agree that would look best, however I have small children and I am worried they'd break it or hurt themselves on it. I have found a couple I like, but could I get opinions on whether they'd work, or other suggestions? I'll attach pics of how the room is currently looking (still missing frames for wall above love seat). Thankyou in advance.

Here are a few more coffee tables I've seen.

Look at round and/or padded ottomans instead. A tray on top turns it into a coffee table. The last one below is Ikea's Ektorp which is slipcovered. Extra covers would change up the look and you could throw them in the laundry when the peanut butter gets too thick.

If you go with wood, choose one with rounded edges; the last one you posted with pointy corners is out. I think any of the others would work. Skip the glass; with children, it would be a nightmare to keep clean.

Lisa - would you mind sharing where you got the artwork? It would look great in my house, too! :)
Erin - Thankyou! I'm really happy with it.

Njschaefer78 - it's from United Artworks in Victoria, Australia. It's called 'aqua tiles' and I believe they ship internationally.

Groveraxel - your suggestions are fantastic. Thanks so much. I had no idea, and now you've put me on track. I love the grass woven ottomans too, but I just need to find one as nice as the ones in your pics. The ikea option is a very clever idea too. To the shops I go!
