We put up a Sunsetter retractable awning. It keeps the sun from heating that part of the house and yet in the winter (Washington state) that is where we get the winter sun (if there is any). Of course everyone knows here on the west side of the state we all look like we are tanned but it is really rust. lol.

Pergolas : The idea is you want sun in the wintertime in this area to help heat your house, but you want shade in summer time to keep it cool. Think of grapes growing on pergolas. They provide lots of shade in summer and die off in winter. Plus, imagine relaxing in your lounge chair and your love one feeding you grapes :)
