Is the trim detail wood or plastic? I vote for a bar in the kitchen. It seems that you may use it more there. How about painting it white and then do a chocolate glaze on it to knock down the white? Satin hardware to blend with your cabinet hardware.

Elklaker, I believe it's wood veneer. it's fairly heavy. Hubby isn't keen on the front being white, even with a glaze, but we do like the idea of a two tone finish if its in the kitchen. something like this.

Great piece, I think color would be beautiful. Your home is fairly neutral, a colored piece would pop, either way, you can use it anywhere as needs change. We did the same thing with a similar piece for a changing table for my niece.

This would make a good accent piece in the dining room. I'd go for a white finish as above, with reddish toned wood drawers if possible to match (sort of) or coordinate with your dining table and chairs. I don't think you can change out the hardware, but you could spraypaint it some other metallic finish.

This piece would upstage the rest of your kitchen because it has a lot of character. It looks too big for a guest room.

I think that the hardware can be changed, I would actually keep the rope element but remove the upper and lower pieces and backplate on the doors if they are laid on top of the veneer. The holes can be filled and finished along with the dresser.

I like Maria Smith's idea. Any possibility of unscrewing the hardware and showing some new photos of how it looks without the hardware? Sometimes seeing a clean slate gives a much better idea of what can be done.

Have it sprayed by a finishing company in a great color.

If it was me, I would paint it a high gloss kelly green- real bright. Then paint the front molding white to make them pop. It is a piece with really good bones. I say go bold with color on it!

All of the hardware is removable, although I'm not sure whether the plates detach. I will take pics this afternoon. But I definitely need some knobs or handles on each drawer to make use of them.

The more I look at it and how neutral my rooms are the more I love the idea of a statement piece. And in blue Gray.

I painted a similar looking dresser and I use it in my dining room. Disclaimer-this is a really old picture and I promise I got rid of the old icky candles!

has anyone used Annie Sloan chalk paint? Or what type of paint is recommended? latex is a nightmare.

I would put it in the dining room and any special dishes that you have for guests etc. in kitchen can all be stored in there, even fine cutlery and glasses. It will also serve as a buffet table for placing food trays, in turn, this will make up space in your kitchen.

Your inspiration pic looks like annie sloan aubusson blue. Chalk paint is very easy to work with. It can be sanded back for a distressed look or left as is. It is a very flat finish, so use her waxes to protect piece and add sheen. I think side by side,the BM looks purple. Its a matter of preference, but I like AS because its brighter. I think it would work in your DR, with green accents. You already have green candles :)

I have used Annie Sloan paint on a small cabinet and it is awesome! It is very forgiving and you don't have to do much for prep other than clean your piece well first. Definitely use the Annie Sloan wax too.

bbkieffer - What do you use for cleaning? and is one coat sufficient for wood this dark?

Looking at your home and furnishings it seems that a warm color would work better, like her Aries, English Yellow, or Barcelona Orange. For more something more subtle but with warm color the Chateau Grey, Primer Red, or Olive would work and still be very versatile should you decide to use the piece in another room. I have used annie sloan paint too. Two tips for you. Paint it with shellac first in case it bleeds and use a small roller if you prefer a smooth finish

Erica, you must post a pic once you have decided on a color (like the bluey grey you just posted). Many of us have older wood furniture we are thinking may look better painted...not antiques, just old. I'm watching you, bb and heather for ideas.

this looks a brighter hue outside in natural light, but the progress has begun. I love it! The top needs another pass because I was dealing with winds near the ends. I can't wait til it all comes together!

i say, paint it out black, add some feet to the bottom, and a slab of marble or granite to the top for the kitchen...you don't need a ton of stone, so shouldn't cost a fortune.....you can never have enough drawers!!! I love the chalkboard behind! keep us posted!

considered buffing out the brass handles but didn't we preferred what painting them would do.

it's called Oxford Blue. I went with a spray instead of getting the Annie Sloan paint. With all the crevices in the front I was afraid of doing a bad job w a brush. once I invest in a sprayer then I'll feel more comfortable. (and have more experience. )

well it's 99% done and after placing in our kitchen we realized it wasn't a good fit, so it's found a home in our dining room. What do y'all think? I quickly placed a few items on top that likely won't stay there, but I love the color pop. we also have very warm lighting here which gives it a rich hue. eventually I want to swap out our current chandelier for something else. I also say it's 99 % done because the front base, we discovered, is warped. We are going to get base molding and fix that up. Now I have extra space for all the special event dining ware. Maybe some rustic shelves on the walls above it? This is where the fun begins :) ,thanks to those who suggested a statement piece. Our dining room needed it.
