To make an island work you will most likely need to eliminate the "8x8 column".

When placing an Island it is ideal to have 48" of clearance between the refrigerator and the island and 42" between the sink-range and island. Absolute minimum space between an island and an obstacle (column) is 36", but ideally 42".

i agree with ppf. it does not seem very functional. The layout has the refrigerator, sink and refrigerator a bit far from each other. It does look a bit like a big empty room with all the open floor space in the middle.

If you simply eliminate the peninsula and add an island you will be walking around the island to get from refrigerator to the sink. Perhaps you could swap the refrigerator and ovens??

There seems to be just enough room for a 2 feet wide island.

Could you show a bit more of the plan?

I don't have a better picture but maybe this will help. I've been playing around with it and I think what I'd like to change is the following: move sink and DW to back wall; leave wall ovens in place; move fridge to right wall (to left side of window); move counter with bar sink to right side of that same window and take out peninsula. That leaves left wall open. Add island (maybe 5 x 6) with cooktop and some seating. What do you think? It's not a custom build so I cannot move walls or windows.

What about a narrow island with seating on the end such as this user:

A bit confused on which wall you are calling right, left and back.

Are you able to move/remove the pantry wall?
