As everyone has also commented, that's really bad. Not only is the issue of spacing an issue I would assume that you would want all your tile going one direction. It's like he just used any size of tile that fit without thinking if the "stripes" in it. Yikes!

tile always seems to look crummy until it's grouted, but in this case, it's not looking promising. Hopefully they can pull it out & redo & hopefully you have more tile for them to work with!

I have a rule that if you need to ask if it's a bad job then chances are... it is! This looks terrible!

It's terrible.

Stop him quick before he grouts and can still pull the tile without damaging them. Yes tile jobs look bad until being grouted but all those uneven spaces are just going to look worse. As previous poster noted are you alternating the direction of the stripes on purpose ?

Are the tiles supposed to change direction? If it is a small bath, I would run the tile lines horizontal.

Before I would fire the tile installer I would check to see if the tile could be installed better. I was recently on a project where the tile was so out of square and warped that a perfect install was impossible. Many times the tradesman are blamed for a poor job when the product is practically impossible to install perfectly or the the trade ahead of them did an inadequate job.

I'm in total agreement with previous comments, the tilling looks very amateurish, but there's something else that caught my attention: has he applied the tiles directly on brick? Did he apply enough thinset (then I don't think you should be able to see the bricks like in the 3rd pix) or at least were the bricks treated? I'm not a professional, but is well known that bricks are porous. As it's a bathroom, I'd be worried that if the grout doesn't seal everything tight, you could have problems down the road. I may be wrong though.... but still, you should ask about it.

THERE IS ONLY ONE WORD FOR THIS JOB......ATROCIOUS .....It is so bad...do not pay this tiler anything...and go to the building industry... Has this person got a license....did he do WATERPROOFING and is he licensed...??? I would not pay him a cent... Do you know if the floor is on the right slope.....I would not trust anything at all.....get someone in as in a building inspector and get them to give you their opinion....STOP WORK IMMEDIATELY...my ex husband was a tiler....so I know what the job should look like AND IT IS NOT THAT.....

I agree... a stop work order should be made immediately and I wouldn't pay for the work done if the person you hired was hired as a professional tiler. It is so important to check references and portfolio of the trades you hire. There a lot of 'handy men' out there selling themselves as experts and are far from it. When it comes to tile in bathrooms, it is especially important that the work is done to industry standard. Not only is this job aesthetically appalling, it poses a potential concern for water leaks and mould build up in the future. It is always best to pay a bit more for talented craftsmen; not only will their work look far better but you don't have to worry about the ramifications and cost of a job poorly done. The expense of buying new tile and worst case scenario, dealing with leaks down the road are not worth the risk.

When I had my deck rebuilt, it was all good, until it cane time to apply the coating. I swear it was this guys first job. When it dried, there was low spots that formed puddles in the rain. I complained it was a disaster, and the deck I took off was in better shape than this. So he comes again and starts sanding it off. Redid it. I complained as he was doing it to stop making swirling marks.

Had a bad bathroom tile installer as well. He installed shower bars because I was recently paralyzed on one side due to a stroke. One day I noticed my grab bar was loose. I asked him to check it out and tighten it, he said " it's fine". A few months later it moved out of place while I was exiting the shower and I slipped on the wet tile that was on a stupid ramp ( no idea what that was for) ,fell and broke my hip. Needless to say I was extremely angry about this! He was hired privately by my ex, so I can't sue the guy. If I see him one day I won't hold back telling him off. This set my recovery back about 3 years. I was just starting to walk when I fell.
I had another guy fix it for me and he said the tile wasn't even water sealed, really bad job.

Anyways not really the same issue as yours , but it's true there are people who don't know what they are doing or simply just don't care. He didn't care or he would have fixed it when I said it was loose and unsafe. My ex didn't care either so I made him my ex by divorcing him.

I hire only licensed, and insured workers. I'm willing to pay the extra $ to have it done right & covered by their insurance. (usually 1 year warranty)

THIS IS A COMPLETE TEAR DOWN.

Before you do anything with him document as much as you can. Take a ton of photos of the job and your contractor (in case he is not who he says he is). Get the license numbers of his vehicles and any other paperwork you have from him -- advertisements, business cards, etc. Get names of his workers as well.

Then stop all work and payment immediately. This is the worst job I have ever seen. It is a total tear down. Potential health risks could be huge with this job. He shouldn't flip burgers, much less install tile.

If licensed (which I doubt), report him to the License Contractors Board and have them pull his license. Report him to your City Building Inspectors. This info is available on the Internet.

If you paid him any money, issue stop payments, and take him to Small Claims Court. Your claim should be for full reimbursement of what you paid him, the cost to demo what he did, the replacement cost of the tile he has ruined and any structual damage he may have caused your home.

Tile lines going in every direction
The white coating has been left to dry and may be difficult to remove.
Between the tiles you can see a variety of subsurfaces.

HE IS THE GUY WHO MAKES IT HARD FOR THE GOOD CONTRACTORS.

Contractor fired the guy who did the tile work and he is going to tear everything down and redo the tile himself. Unfortunately he has to order more tile so project will be delayed at least a week. Thank you for all the support during this stressful experience!

Just checking. Have you ever seen the Contractor's work? Did you check out his credentials? After all he hired this clown and let him loose in your home. Were permits pulled on this bathroom?

For the future, next time you are working with contractors and something doesn't look or feel right, stop them immediately and notify the Contractor. If you still are not satisfied, call in another professional and get their opinion before restarting the job, even if you have to pay them.

The best thing you can do to find a good contractor is to be armed with knowledge about your project before you start getting bids, so you can ask good questions and know if they are giving you the right answers. For each contractor I interview I have a list of questions so I ask everyone the same information. I also give them a list of the things I want done. a room floorplan, as well as photos. when possible, and show them the materials I am considering. Best you know the materials may not work before you buy them.

I also use a small mini recorder, so I don't have to be bothered taking notes and I can focus on the conversation. Often a contractor will agree or promise to do things that isn't detailed in the bid or contract. The recording is a way to refresh his memory, when he didn't bother to take notes during our meeting. I no longer hear, "I don't remember us talking about that!"

Yikes!!!! Glad you trusted your gut instinct. That is certainly amateur workmanship. All other comments are correct in that the tiles should line up and be flat. One thing to consider is setting the tile with a minimal grout joint (say 1/16 of an inch) doing so will keep the job looking better longer as the bigger grout joints will become dirty over time and are hard to keep clean

I'm sorry, but it looks crummy. I have family members who deal in this line of business and the tiles need to be leveled and even on all sides, unless you are going for some rustic look, which doesn't seem like it judging by the tiles. I'd say bye bye to this fella.

I've been working for a tile company that does full bath and kitchen remodels first thing I noticed the tile grains are going different ways, makes it look sloppy also the grout lines fluctuate too much.i always stick with 1/8in grout lines gives a little room to cheat where no one one notice but who installed it. Ya terrible job sorry you had to go through that
