First of all, don't feel overwhelmed. There are many web sites and books to help. Plus, you have a pretty small pond. Do you know if the pond has a rubber (or other material) liner? If it doesn't and is just a hole in the ground, you probably want to put a liner in to prevent it from draining away. You can get liners from companies like Pondliner.com.

A simple feature to add to your pond would be a little waterfall. You can create one by mounding dirt at the back. Perhaps near that tree (not too close to the roots).Then you can buy a plastic or rubber waterfall reservoir, embed it in the mound two or three feet above the level of the pond and run a hose down to a small pump in the pond. This will recirculate water up to the waterfall using a very small amount of electricity. Finally, camouflage everything with rocks and stones, then plant small shrubs and plants all around. This, of course, is a very general description. But you'll find lots of photos on the web. Let your own tastes and preferences be your guide. Remember, it's a small pond. So don't get carried away.

In my own situation, I decided to have a pond about your size and asked a contractor who was doing work at the house to dig me one. When I came back to check, I found he had dug a hole twelve by twenty-five feet.and dislodged about twenty large boulders. Although this made my pond project much larger than expected, we now have a lovely pond, complete with water lilies, frogs and salamanders.
