The thing has been out there for 23 years. Used for it's intended purpose once, maybe twice. It now serves as a perch for a Heron that is eyeing up my fish pond. He's been using it for three years. Somewhere nearby there must be a family he's attempting to take care of.

Part of the American landscape. Our hoop is now being used by the second generation.

We truly love the hoop outside the house. It provides my kids with a great outlet to burn off energy while working on there hand / eye coordination. A must have for any young family

Our daughter is 21 and very busy working and college. She played with it a lot as a child with all the neighbor kids. Now only keeping it there for grandchildren maybe someday.

I have always had one but my boys are older now and it just didn't happened on the last move.

My 71 yr old husband shoots 600 freethrows on his hoop every day. He has been doing this for years. Couldn't be without it!

I just ask the basketballers out there to be selective when choosing the location. Being in a housing tract we've lived next to avid players. Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam...ad infinitum. Try to take a nap, or work at home and calling clients (as my husband did), or try to watch a bit of TV...forget it! Close all the windows and doors, even though it's a beautiful day, just to muffle the sound that travels across concrete driveways and right into your neighbor's house....day after day after day after day...

We have a basketball hoop attached to our garage. Back when our girls were little, we had this gorgeous white cat named Molly. One of Molly's favorite things to do was to climb on the roof and her favorite way to get down was through the basketball hoop onto the roof of the car. I would park the Taurus wagon so it made it a bit easier for her to jump down. Molly was a great cat and we still miss her.

Yes!! I have 2 sons and a Great Dane named "Rocky" that love to play basketball.
A basketball hoop can be found in just about any school yard or neighborhood park--where they belong. Having someone with a hoop next door in a residential setting can be a real problem. Kids bouncing that ball for hours, fighting, screaming...no thanks! I hope those who have hoops in a populated area put tight restrictions on the kids who use it, being respectful of neighbors.

I despise the portable basketball hoop on a heavy metal stand. It is ugly, totally non-recyclable, and a blight in the neighborhood. It appears a family may move but the hoop stays. And stays.
We have a netball hoop as we have 3 daughters
  • 12 years ago
One in the front yard for all the neighborhood kids on the cul-de-sac, and one in the back for my son and all the future basketball days we will have (he is only 5).
No, but our neighbor leaves his in the middle of the street most of the time and wind storms will come and blow it over then we have to drive around it... I wish he would just attach a back board above his garage door... LOL
  • 12 years ago
No. Neither son was interested in basketball. Older son (now 25) was into tennis, swimming and surfing. Younger son (now 17) is slim but not athletic.
jward2, I had to laugh when I read your post. That's just what our across-the-street neighbors did! They left the basketball hoop stand behind when they moved.
Bought one for our son at Christmas (he plays basketball 4 times a week) but the home one barely gets used - and it wasn't terribly cheap...
We installed one the first week we lived in our house. It is a great gathering space for our son and lots of neighbors and friends. If you have entertainment at home, the kids will stay home more, you will know their friends, and stay close during those growing years. I recommend it highly!
We have had one for many years and it has gone through seasons of much use to little use. We've really enjoyed it and hope it's season of use will eventually continue with the arrival of grandchildren. At the same time, I certainly agree with an earlier comment - they can be very annoying to near neighbors. If a hoop is not, or cannot be positioned so that its noise does not disturb others, then regulation of its use (time of day, and how much time at a go) should certainly be put in place.
We had one, but the kids almost never used it, so we gave it to some neighbors a few years ago with our kids' permission.

Yes, and it gets used all the time. But, I have a lot of 9 and 10 year old boys running around my house. Not sure if that will still be true when they get older.

We just bought our second home after 24 years and my son entering High School. It definitely had to have a full on area for Basketball playing. We sized down but didn't when it came to the Basketball court area. We found the perfect house with a super long wide private drive that was freshly paved. Having your freshmen son still wanting to shoot hoops with his Mom is priceless! Our house is a magnet for all of his good respectful friends that are on and off the High School Team. Life is Good!
the kids love it and use it often. When we bought the house I really didn't care if it had it or not as it wasn't even something I thought about - but now that I have seen the magic it has of bringing kids from all over the neighborhood together - It will always be in our yard for them to use.

YES we do!!! 3 kids, 2 on DI athletic scholorship for basketball ( boy and girl). One left in high school, DI basketball prospect graduating 2017. College athletes come home regularly and at some point, the whole family is out shooting hoops !! Want to build a bigger and better basketball court in the backyard in hopes of completeing my front yard landscape. But for now, if you have'nt been to our house yet, its the one with the basketball court out front.;)
This is too funny. Yes we do have one. The back board is busted. Our youngest son is going off to college in August. My husband suggested taking it down. I said No we will replace it. A house is just not a home without a basketball goal.
    so much fun!
No...but I sure wouldn't mind having one. Swish...nothing but net.
There was a backboard and hoop above the garage of our old house when we moved in. It didn't take long for my eight year old to smash a ball through both the garage window & rear window of our new minivan parked inside. After that $$$ fiasco, no more hoop for us!
Think about people who live next to your house and listen this terrible noise every singe day. Before build a basketball court in the backyard ask your neighbors: Is that OK?
I am one of 3 daughters who were all tennis players but for some reason my mother *always* wanted a basketball hoop in our driveway. We never got one.
We live in Indiana, so yes, of course we do! It's been here for 30+ years. Warm weather means the sound of basketballs. I can't relate to the sound being annoying, when to me, it's comforting. Good wholesome fun!
Half of our neighbors have one as well :)
Hoop on side of driveway with flagpole!!! How American -- national pride and national past time.
We had a constantly used basketball hoop until about ten years ago when it saved my husband from going over the back hill in an ice storm. The pole stopped his car and then it just fell over in seemingly slow motion. The kids were all in college by then so we did not replace it. It was always a great way for our four kids and the neighbor kids to work off all that teenage energy....and an excellent way for my husband to wow the kids with his hook shot.

Basketball hoops without a basketball court is a no-go for our household! It would be nice to have a private court though! :)

Be careful about site location relative to the sun. You really want the sun to your back at your favorite time of play. We sited in the AM and after install realized we shoot into the sun from. One corner.

Our house had a hoop attached to garage roof. The kids used it occasionally but eventually I removed it because it leaked in the garage. Not to mention it was ugly. When my daughter wad older and had a job she bought a freestanding hoop. Used it about a week. It was ugly and in the way for years. Then I had to pay someone to haul it away. Fast forward, she wants me to buy another one so she can lose weight! NO!
We did when we bought the house. We have a gravel driveway, so I was a little curious how well you can dribble on a sloping gravel driveway (the post the hoop was attached to was crooked too) . Anyway, a chain and a pickup truck got rid of it.
Yes, we have a hoop and a half court. We live in the rural woods, so there are no parks or community courts nearby for our kids to access, nor any neighbors to bother.. but I personally find the complaints about neighbor kids playing ball really disheartening.. (the comment that connects playing basketball to screaming and fighting is further disheartening.) I love to hear our kids and their friends being active and having fun. Is it preferred that children stay indoors and play video games or attach themselves to electronic devices? Our whole family uses our basketball hoop - my husband, teenage sons, and small kids. Hooray for healthy, active, and interactive families, homes & yards!
Many of these comments were a joy to read.

I have had the misfortune of living next door to people who have had basketball hoops and listening to the noise at all hours of the day is really aggravating. I was so happy when the basketball hoop disappeared!

I have a client that has a sports court, complete with a professional basketball team's logo . . . that he happens to be the managing partner for.

Had one for years and both kids, self, and husband enjoyed it. 6'5 son got into "dunking" during his Jr. year and broke the backboard. Lived with it for 2 years and finally got rid of it when the youngest went to college. Dunking boy now plays college ball and I'm sure having the ability to practice at home didn't hurt. While we live in the country with no nearby neighbors, can think of a lot more annoying noises from neighbors than kids playing basketball!

I don't have one and agree with those who say they don't belong in areas where homes are close together. I worked second shift as a nurse a few years ago and was constantly tired from lack of sleep caused by the the neighbor's boys playing basketball in their back yard. They played before school and after, then all day in summer. I could hear the ball being dribbled, hitting the backboard, sometimes missing and banging off the garage, and the kids screaming. It was a big part of the reason I sold that house.

We had one at the last house for our kids. We moved last year and we do not have one now because the kids are now 37 & 39!

Have one in my drive... many houses in my neighborhood have them. I am excited that I just poured a new driveway and expanded the depth by about 10 feet! I can shoot a real 3 point shoot on my driveway now!

Too funny! As I pulled out of my private drive to go pick up my son from work just now I noticed the basketball not put back in its spot. So I got out to replace while my car was in park.......like I said Long Wide Private Drive for basketball....My 58 year old self couldn't Resist throwing a few shot's....... Got up to 6 baskets in a row......put the bAll back and went along my merry way!

My son and his friends lived for Basketball.....someone always playing including myself.....this last year it was Track and Mountain biking.......a young boy moved in next store who's Dad bought him a kid size hoop......In fact they live in a beautiful Spanish Estate while we're the little cottage........

The other day I saw my 17 year old son walking pass our house towards the private drive with the boy who was beaming ear to ear.....,they spent a lot of time playing and my son announced ......

i've come out of retirement and trying out for Varsity Basketball...... It's a great way to end my year!

I was so excited because he then threw me the ball which meant I'll have that special time back on the court with him

Best toy we bought our children. They use it every day and more.

We have two. One over the trampoline and one set up as usual. Let those kids expend their energy.

Cabingirl13 do you have a friend or relative who could show you how to hang your 'hoop' yourself? Wouldn't it be fun to surprise your husband with a night of hoops and dinner in the backyard? Look, sweetheart, I hung the hoop myself. Now let's play HORSE, you go first. That would be a slamdunk.
