Is the stuff below the window the stuff you don’t like or the whole wall of brick? Are either of the brick walls the thin facing brick? Is the floor to ceiling brick connected to a fireplace around the corner? I also don’t know much about brick, but I agree the brick below the window should go.

I think you can wok with the brick wall and maybe remove what's under the window. Let him out of the dog house. He meant well and wanted to surprise you, and I can tell you, from experience, you'll laugh about his one day.

I don't think it's a crisis. Kind of goes with the backsplash vibe.

The colors in the brick are too different...they don't work. And, the stone is completely different in the kitchen. Give him a copy of Pillars of the Earth to read in the doghouse. I'd have it removed.

Not a fan for several reasons. Not a fan of the existing stone on a backsplash where scrubbing is tough either though . . if you took the stone out and put this in the kitchen, now i'm liking the echo . . though I still want to wash them both with tan paint so they look more alike .. . . if he bought enough that he doesn't want to take back and you want to encourage him, get him to switch it to the backsplash . . . then use a camel toned paint watered down by half on the old real brick wall and watered by 1/4 on the new fake stuff . . the red will still come through but it will lighten and soften it and keep it consistent . .
