If you are not replacing the pink shower unit, I would keep the pink tile counter top as well and paint your cabinet white. The golden color of the terrazzo really throws off the pink and white color scheme. The vintage look of black and white hex tile would really complete the bath.

Thanks bettyboogie! I have checked out her website before. Many fans of mid-century modern homes think that the pink bathrooms should stay, but I have a few damaged tiles in the bath area and a grab bar that I am not fond of. I also can't for the life of me think of a wall color that would make the gold/copper/off-white terrazzo floor compliment the pink tile. I told someone locally that I was going to remove the pink and they looked at me like I was crazy! Also, the toilet has already been replaced and is white. Michigammemon, thanks for your comments, I am looking at a tub on craigslist now that may replace my pink tub. I would like to keep the cabinet unpainted as there is a lot of trim work that relates with the rest of the house. In my opinion, to paint the cabinet white would loose its integrity. I am open to other opinions, and agree that it might be a good solution if keeping the pink tile. I will try to post a couple of pictures of the house...

I used to have one of these, but it was pink and mint tile! Have you thought about other color schemes? Pink/orange, pink/lime/avocado green, pink/grey, pink/turquoise, pink/wine.......some of these color combos would work especially well with the natural wood tone framing, and offer the opportunity to update fixtures, textures and wall colors without significant expense. Also, the wall to wall mirror is passe....replace with a large framed mirror...do something interesting with the frame and use color on the wall peeking around?

I love the idea of turquoise, I have splashes of it all over the house, but was afraid of it being too much. I have a sink picked out, actually a couple, but this WetStyle one will give me the function of two hopefully without a lot of plumbing? There is a picture of the type of tile too, haven't nailed it down yet as far as color but I like glass and the horizontal tile ties in with the horizonalness of the house. I haven't purchased anything yet and am definitely on a budget but want it to look high end when finished.

Glad to see that you love and appreciate your amazing Mid-century home, It's lovely. I am thinking that your floor "matches" your wood trim and maybe if you view it like you would a wood floor that would make it easier to pull the room together. I think turquoise would be really pretty and go nice with the rest of your home, but it's my Fave so I'm biased for sure on that one ;-). With the sink you linked to it looks like you are planning to keep mid century clean lines but more "modern" than modest. I think it will look nice and I like the idea of the horizontal tiles, they'll go well with all your brick too. Come to think of it I really like turquoise and orange together so maybe that's a way to work it, and it would totally match the era of the house. Best of luck on your reno I hope you'll post pics when it's finished.

Thanks bettyboogie, I love turquoise too, so we are total agreement. I do want it to be soothing and spa like (as much as it can in that small space). I had thought maybe I needed to tear the wall down between toilet/bath area and sink area to make it more open. Here are some better pics of the terrazzo floors...

Wow that does seem an interesting choice with the pink tile, sort of makes you wonder about the original plan, It's pretty though. I've seen some amazing turq. and butterscotch or orange rooms in vintage ads and such so I know it can work. Maybe borrow a fan book from the paint store to figure out what seems to work with the floor and go from there, you might be surprised.

I think you could take out part of the wall at the end of the counter (course, only if it's not a load bearing wall), I would leave the tub side of the doorway and the lower half where the cabinet is attached, above the cabinet you could leave it open or I've seen some amazing "dividers" for that sort of space that would be era perfect but allow more light and an airier feel to the room. there are a couple half wall baths starting with image 92 here http://retrorenovation.com/galleries/1960s-kitchens-2/ I've seen some others that were cooler buried somewhere else on RR but can't seem to find them now.

Maybe I should embrace the pink and wallpaper with one of these wallpapers...

I'd totally do the pink and orange one. I have an Airstream trailer with an orange bathroom and I used a funky orange, yellow, and pink fabric for the curtain on the window. I think it works. Wall paper would be a lot less work/expense than a whole renovation.

i don't understand! that bathroom is FABULOUS!

It already has a floating vanity which i like, it just needs to be freshened up. I am still wavering between spa makeover or keeping the pink and doing frameless shower doors and wallpaper. If I keep the pink tiles I need to find 4 or 5 replacement tiles that have cracked. I like all the ideas, and thanks for the websites. If anyone else has any other ideas, I would love to hear your ideas.

When my husband and I decided it was time to shake things up a little bit, we decided that we were financially stable enough to move out of our home that we had lived in for ten years, and move into our "dream home" We found a house that was only half way built and we were able to add some features to it that were all our own. For our bathroom, we did decide to go modern and had a frameless shower doors. At first I was a little skeptical... cause it looks like you're showering in a glass box - but my husband was really into the design. So we bought it. And it really does add a fancy element to our bathroom, and I've come to love it!

I am trying to hang on to my mid century with damaged tile in shower stall. My reaction was that the wood color was not working in this space, but love to see how you worked it out!

Your house is gorgeous and in such great condition. I love so many details in the bathroom: the brick, wood doors, wood trim windows, floors. I know a lot of people love the pink, and for the historical element. But I would personally take out the pink tile, tub, counter and replace it with something updated. I would leave everything else. The current vanity would look nice with a nice clean slab of white quartz. If you decide to leave it pink, it's a good choice too. Everything is in such great condition!

I love it but there is so much going on in here you need to keep your staples and wipe the rest clean. Keep the tile floor and pink tile but replace the baseboards, door frames, etc, or paint them white. Paint the cabinets white and replace knobs with something quirky and fun. Once everything is whited out I would maybe do a textured wall paper or just fun art pieces. Also, I would change the door to the shower or even replace with a curtain and add a retro printed fabric.

We just finished redoing an all original pink tiled bathroom. I'll post photos soon. We're doing the whole house. The outside is here under 'Mid Century Home Renovation'. Our pink bathroom is very tiny and has original pink tiles and the original pink tile floor. I looked at a lot of bathrooms before I did it and kept it super simple. I found a beautiful paint color and put a white roman shade up and am waiting on a shower curtain to be made.

I'm surprised they put such a dark terrazzo floor in your bathroom. For me that makes it hard to work with. I'd take it out and lighten it up or keep it and change the tile. Personally I'd change the floor and buy vintage tiles in another pink shade to put on the floor.

I'll share my pictures and maybe it will give you ideas. All the fun wallpapers and fabrics are fun but in the end I had to go as simple as possible. It's a small space and all that design would have been too much. It's great in a larger space but it's hard to live in with a small space.

Pink is much harder to do than people realize. Our saving grace was finding the right paint color!

I added a 1920's sconce on the wall from Ebay. It's a pale yellow and very small with a milk glass globe and a pull chain. Charming. I'm working on pics of an ongoing reno on the front of our house being posted on Houzz under Mid Century Home or House Renovation...Not sure if it's house or home but it's been ongoing most of the year.
