ideas for an open space within the house

I really would like to utilize this space for something exciting and low maintenance. Space opened to the vagaries of the weather. originally designed by my father inlaw but he is unable to articulate his concept then for the space. live in Ghana - West Africa. ideas welcome

I'd turn it into a little courtyard. If you want low maintenance you could put down tiles and then a table and chairs to sit outside and enjoy the sun. If you need shade a tree in there would also work (with either tiles or grass).

that was quick :). Appreciate but wondering how would the rain water drain off then? wouldn't want to do grassing as mosquitoes could breed , prefer the floor tiles but concerned about drainage of any water.

Sorry Elokko, this is where I'm not an expert! I presume you could have a slight fall with the tiles either into the centre if you have a tree there, or to the edge where it could drain into an existing drain if you have one near by.
