I'd say it might be dicey, but I also believe all rules were made to be broken when the right occasion arises. Everything depends on its context. If you could post a picture showing how the two rooms meet -- and a couple more showing each room on its own -- you might get more useful comments. In most circumstances, it would be better to have an entirely different kind of floor meeting hardwood -- carpeting, tile?

If there is a good transition area where you can put a wide strip to break the two, then yes it can generally work. However, it would depend on the two types and colors of wood. Pictures would help.
