I don't like that light either...this is the first thing I want to do. It is a sitting room.

The chandelier makes me think that part of the room was a dining area. I'd replace it with a nice ceiling fan with lights if you aren't going to use it as a dining room.
Otherwise, I'd move the couch, loveseat, etc to the other side of the room and buy a table, however small. I'd still replace the light fixture, tho, unless it's something you love.

Thanks. Yes, that side of the room where the light is was used as a dining area by the previous owners. It was a big table there. But, I would like to change this. I do not want a dining area since this room is the first room you see getting inside the house. I want to make it more as a guest area. I have already a family room. On one side I have nice windows, the other side (with the light) is pretty dark. Thanks again.

You have a real design dilemma, all right! The room is such an odd shape and it has been divided visually by the carrying beam. Before we all start trying to come up with ideas, is there another room in the house which could become the sitting room?

Also, could you give measurements of the entire space and then measurements of each space on either side of the beam?

With the position of the chandy, it looks as if the builder (mistakenly) thought that space could be used for dining.

Missed your comment about the rooms. You can have a dining room as you enter a house and it can look quite charming.

no fan the ceiling is much to low, and its not needed, spider off the electrical and add recessed lighting.

also you will need to make the dark sofa's blend with that room, you might paint it gray, and think about the accents that will tie it all together.

What's you goal at the end of the day? Reading nook, TV area, entertainment space... What's your interest? It is your house after all haha.
