So, mveasy, those look quite European; I think opposites of suemcl's photos. I would have to pick one style or other.

I like both. The rest of the house is hardwood, wide white baseboards, arched doorways. Very small rooms, like the kitchen, separate dining room, and all the bedrooms appear to all be about 9'X9'squares, and all interior doors appear to be white 5 panel solid wood.

mveasey's ideas are nice and an up to date look to coordinate house, but the authentic look is the white because that's what they all were, from castle to cottage.

I lived in a house built then and not changed. yellow walls, white cabinets and appliances, dark green and white alternating asbestos 8" tile floors, red formica counters with silver colored edge band that stained clothes if you rubbed on it, white café curtains with rick rack, aluminum set on stove of the cooking salt and pepper shakers and a lidded container with a strainer to pour bacon grease in and save for seasoning.

Thanks, bgfuqua. I knew about the silver banded counters, but thought the surface was linoleum. My mom actually had the aluminum set. Maybe I can trade some other thing of mom;s to my sister who has the aluminum set!

Here (below) are some original designs for kitchens from the 1940's. Not all white, but predominantly so. Mostly metal cabinets, which were considered more hygienic in that era. Doctors' and dentists' offices had the same metal cabinetry, usually white but sometimes in mint green.

Our house had a late- 1940's metal cabinet kitchen when we moved into it (which had replaced the original 1920's wood Shaker kitchen), but the metal drawers were starting to shed metal dust so we replaced it and went back to the original 1920's style (with many modern modifications, of course).

P.S. Most of the tudors in my historic neighborhood (houses from the 1920's and '30's), are being renovated with Craftsman style kitchens to go with the interior wood trim. Lots of quartersawn oak and natural cherry Shaker cabinetry. It is mostly the colonials, which tend to have original painted white trim, putting in white kitchens. None of this has to guide your choices in the least, I just thought it might be useful to know what people with similar historic houses tend to be doing with their renovations.
