Does the door have room to open without hitting the table? What about a thick shelf?

I think that it could accommodate a 12" but not wider. The shelf is a possibility.

Floating shelf 25% wider than the art.

So 25% wider would mean the length of the shelf would be 56" if the table is 48"?

No, either the shelf or the table, but not both. I also like the idea of a floating shelf. Let's say your art is 48", the shelf or table should be 62-63".

Where do I purchase a thick floating shelf in dark wood, like the one pictured in the above post?

I vote for a thick shelf !!!

Try IKEA

Definitely go with a table. My first thought is something in a dark wood similar to your floors and door, but the colors in the painting and carpet allow for a lighter finish as well. It needs to be narrow and a length proportionate to the painting.

I also have a narrow hallway that includes a stairway and two openings to the adjoining kitchen and livingroom. Rather than add a piece of furniture I mounted two reclaimed corbels on the wall with a glass top instead of a console table which took up valuable floor space. I hung a collage of black and white family photos above the shelf. I've seen similar corbels at Restoration Hardware. If you don't like this look a floating shelf would also work.
