Once Stella D' Oro daylilies finish their initial bloom in mid summer, there are a few different ways to maintain them to keep them looking fresh for the remainder of the season. The first method is to periodically trim off individual flower stems and leaves down near the base and allow the nice green foliage to remain. This is a slow process and may work well for a small grouping of plants. Alternatively, by early July you can cut the entire plant down to the ground. This may seem drastic but within a few weeks a nice new clump of green foliage will emerge and typically this new foliage will remain fresh and green for the remainder of the season. This is our preferred method as it drastically reduces maintenance and results in a much better looking plant through late summer & autumn. This holds true for all other daylily varieties as well.
