Refinishing windows and baseboards

I have a old craftsman style house with gum wood wainscoting and trim and french doors that are stained and seem to have a faux grain painted on. I am refinishing and found out the frames of the windows are gum wood but the windows themselves are fir. Staining is bringing out the two different grains and it does not look good. Apparently, 100 years ago when first built, some sort of paint, glaze or ?, was used to pull the two woods together but yet the wood work still looks like stain and consistent- not like a paint. I am trying to find resources to help me get this done in a way that is consistent. I only want to do the windows, frames and baseboards. Can anyone refer me to someone in the east bay who has this expertise or offer some help? I would really appreciate it.
