what's missing?

I'm sort of done with this hallway, but I think it's missing something - any ideas? I know I need to replace the lighting but haven't decided on something specific yet. I have kids and a dog, so a carpet on the floor will be difficult to keep clean. I'm considering a bright color somewhere or maybe paiting a pattern on the floor...

I love what you have done so far - could you just take the scatter cushions off the hall seat ( leave the bench cushion) and snap a photo ? I think it might work a little better without them ?

    Here are my quick thoughts:

Great job! Everything looks beautiful!! The gray and white palette you've started with gives the room a fresh look, and sets an elegant tone. The staircase is a star.

To finish off the space, I recommend adding some warmth to the neutral beginnings. I would add some (very!) colorful art, a few pieces of brass (a warm metal), and tie in the wood staircase railing with some carefully selected wooden display pieces. Everything in the room is so new, I think you would benefit greatly from selecting an antique for the space.

Here's a quickly thrown together example - I've used a tall, brass floor lamp next to your built-in coat rack, a tall, colorful abstract painting to finish off your flower display, and some wood vases wrapped in twine with another brass piece to put on the shelf above the radiator (?). You'll want something to hang on the wall here as well, so I included a small clover mirror and staggered three photographs.

Oh - and after looking through your "entry" idea book, I'm also thinking you should change out the white coat hooks to brass, or an antique bronze.

-> zemptron - thank you for the suggestions - I like them. I can definitely see the colorful art and the brass is a good idea. But I can't put a light where you suggested as I don't have an outlet nearby.

I think that looks better - it was looking a little 'full' before !! :-)

@etual, I'm glad you like the ideas, hopefully they help you in some way.

Since you can't add a light fixture here (or anything that must be plugged in), perhaps a lovely antique grandmother clock? This would be a major wood piece, so if you went that route, I would definitely do brass coat hooks, and add a major brass piece on the shelf over the radiator.
Maybe instead of a decorative piece, you can think of something functional that would do well here? An umbrella stand? With a fun ceramic umbrella stand, maybe you could add a complimentary fabric to your built in?

A mirror would be nice if it hasn't been mentioned already.

I like all of the above but need to choose - I like the grandmother clock idea - I can see it would complement the stairs, but maybe it would be too big? I'm not sure... I really like the umbrella stand. So remove the flowers, put in the light blue umbrella stand and find matching fabric? I think a mirror above the radiator would be nice.

I was thinking about the sculpture above indsted of the flowers.. but now I like the umbrella stand better..
