Get rid of Tudor style?

The stucco on our 91' tudor-style home is rotting due to water damage. We live in Michigan, so we are hesitant to replace it with Hardie board for fear that it will not last either. Considering premium vinyl siding with some design elements (vertical, shakes, etc) instead of the tudor style. Also, there is about a $10k price difference between the two (Hardie board on the front, and vinyl on the rest vs vinyl all the way around). I love the tudor style, but it is hard for me to justify the extra cost for something that may not last. What would you do?

My husband has been a firefighter for 30 years, and according to what he told me when we were discussing our neighbor's house having vinyl siding, vinyl will make a house fire much, much worse than it would otherwise be because it's a petroleum product and burns at a higher temperature. He says the the fumes the vinyl gives off is also more toxic than regular smoke so if you're near it, you're more likely to have serious issues from that. He absolutely refuses to even consider vinyl siding for those reasons.

We could always do composite too. Not necessarily set on vinyl. But, the sides and rear of the house are currently done in vinyl.

Love the Tudor style, I feel the added character might justify the cost.

The house has some interesting roof lines that will be attractive even without the Tudor touches. It is determined already that you will have new siding so just tear down the Tudor "boards" and see how it looks before the contractors show up. If you do decide not to do Tudor, you will the area above the garage door opening that will need some fixing, but that doesn't look like too big of a deal.

I like the Tudor style, too. One suggestion is to change the garage door to something with more interest. Maybe one with window panes across the top that mimic the windows in your house.

Hardie Board is extremely durable. " Most Hardie board siding comes with a 50-year, limited transferrable warranty. And according to Smart Homeowner.com, "this type of siding is completely rot and insect resistant, and can even handle the corrosive environment of salt spray near the ocean."

Make sure you get it professionally installed and have the correct type of Hardie board for your region installed.
