Hi Christine, I really think your neutral toned bedroom needs an accent color, to add a bit of life to your space. I like what you have done so far, and think you are almost there. So pick a colour you like and add some accessories, an area rug, throw at foot of bed, lamps, a reading chair, vase, and some wall art. Changing the placement of furniture can make huge changes to a space. As for your first question, if the rug is not the same pattern as your curtains and pillow shams it might compete with the rug pattern - lol. . . . meaning pulling the eye back and forth from pattern to pattern. I did some measuring and unfortunately I wouldn't have much room left at the foot of my bed if I move it sideways. I would love to hide my dresser because it stands out so much but I have nowhere else to put it! I was thinking my accessories could be in the blue family because my living room has blues and greens. I would also like to get a big leaning mirror to go across the dresser! Anyway back to the rug, would solid be too boring?

Are you saying that if you moved the bed to be beneath the double windows, it would extend too far? What is at the other end of your room from where you took the photos? As for a blue rug, maybe one that has a little tan in it or some blue and green. Or if you went for solid blue you could find one with a raised texture which would give a bit of a pattern. I'm thinking a blue-gray color might be best or even navy could be very sharp. In both cases you could ten add some blue pillows to the bed or other blue accessories (not many and no small brick-a-brack).

I don't think solid would be boring at all I'm personal lover of the blue green accenting idea.... Favorite colors! It would brighten the whole room up! Good luck!

A solid area rug in an "accessory colour" I feel will not be boring, it will add a punch of colour. Just try to stay to the same shade or tint of colour. Borrow some items from your livingroom - test it out to see if you like it, perhaps a towel or blanket can stand in for the carpet.

Thank you I will look around! Yes my bed extends too far if I move it up against the side wall. My room has a very odd layout. I will take pics of the other side of the room and post. About my curtains, I'm not sure if anyone noticed but the windows next to my bed are off center. Is there anything I can do to make them look symmetrical without tearing up my wall?

I think then that's the only wall for the bed...which works. The room just seemed so long and you could take advantage of this by adding a bench to end of bed. Would also suggest removing desk (hopefully you have another place for it?) and adding a sitting area by the window (add art on the wall). Work with room before you decide on the size and location of a rug. fyi: I didn't notice the windows at all!

Drapes on narrow windows by the bed would look better closed, not drawn to one side. Move dresser to the opposite wall on the side of the room with what I assume is the bathroom door. TV doesn't look good on the dresser. Perhaps if you make a little sitting nook at the far end of the room as suggested by Maureen, and get rid of desk, you could put the TV on a small table in that area. Where the dresser currently is would be a good place for a large piece of framed art. Don't make your bedroom a catch-all for your electronics. It should be a pretty and restful place for you to enjoy.

I plan on getting rid of that not-so-attractive TV altogether.

So heavy furniture isn't lined up on one wall, you could try moving tall boy to opposite wall and add a tall mirror to that wall. Move desk to the right, so it fits up against where the wall juts out and place a cozy chair on back wall with floor light nearby. Or try desk on back wall and chair to the right side of the window.

I moved the furniture around, does it look better? I can switch the L the desk so it goes either way..I may also be able to move it so it's one long desk. Thanks!

Yes, that might work. Scoot the desk to the left away from the window to where the wall stops. Floor lamp in the right side corner. Maybe a picture above the desk. You'd still have room for a seating area with easy chair. Does that double shelf section slide under the desktop in case you wanted to use it as a storage unit rather than a desk at which to sit? (That cat of yours is a lovey creature.)

My first impression for a rug was a solid orange, but since you mentioned something from the blue family, a solid teal blue could look really classy with the cute gray and white curtains.

Love the rug Maureen picked! It appears that when you look into the room you see the side of the chest of drawers so I am with the folks who said move it to the other side of the room. I'd paint that chest of drawers (and perhaps the night stands) a soft blue-gray (like the rug) or a soft gray (like what is in the curtains) so it doesn't stand out so much. The TV has to go! I like soft colors in a bedroom but the room needs a contrast/accent from the gray and gray-blue and I'd suggest a creamsicle (soft tangerine). If you paint the chest, get some drawer pulls with the creamsicle color (Anthropologie has some interesting and unique pulls or just re-use the ones on it now), purchase a duvet in the gray-blue and have pillow accents with the creamsicle. Perhaps you might think of sewing a contrast panel vertically on the leading edge of the curtains and on the edges of the duvet (not a big panel, but in scale). At the foot of the bed, get two smaller bench seats with the soft X shape for the bases with a nubby fabric for some texture. Put a bookcase (consider wallpapering the back of it for some color) along the wall where you have your desk now and put a chair and ottoman with a small table and lamp by the bookcase (a little reading nook but you would have to remove the desk from the room). If you want to keep your desk, take it away from the wall and place it at a diagonal (the wall corner is the right angle and the desk the third side of a triangle) with the chair able to push back into the right angled corner. It appears that the desk is in two parts so if the short book case part can be swung around, it could be parallel to the window. Buy artwork that combines your colors, gray, blue-gray, creamsicle. Without a drawing of a scaled floor plan, it is difficult to know if all this fits right but just play with it in your room!

Final touches...centre desk and add a set or prints or a large piece of art above. On open end of desk, places baskets in the openings. Perhaps a slip covered chair in light linen would be an idea with a colored pillow to the right of the window with a very small table and add your floor lamp, plus new lamps for bed side. A bench seat at end of bed (eventually?). More pillows on bed that suit pillow on chair.

BTW..it looks like the bed/mattress is not centered with the headboard.

The section does slide under the desktop. I didn't even think about that idea!

It is surprisingly difficult to find a small slipcover chair! I found one, but it has stripes, and another, but it is gray. Thoughts? Also I think I'm going to let out the hem on the curtains so they reach the floor.

Slipcovers can be expensive, so you may find a chair you like as is. Wouldn't be worth it unless you found something second hand. There are nicer chairs for your desk, ie: an antqiue dining chair for example that you could paint and change the seat cover, but won't be as comfortable and flexible as the one you have - it depends if you want beauty or comfort!

Fair enough, I will keep looking for a small chair. For the office chair I want comfort :) but I do plan on buying a new office chair so maybe I could find a more stylish one. Speaking of comfort, I'm considering getting a ceiling fan.. any suggestions?

Sorry, didn't mean to make anyone cringe. Should the bench at the end of the bed be the same color as the bed? Also, is a white office chair too much white? I do wish that large dresser wasn't black, but I'm scared of repainting furniture (sanding, making sure it doesn't have drip-marks, peeling)! I'm buying a blue-gray rug! Should my table and floor lamps be in an accent color or is white or silver better? Thank you so much!!

Perhaps consider bed side crystal lamps with a modern shape base; just be sure they are tall enough. You have a floor lamp already? and I would just use in the corner near your desk and update with a white shade. Color of bench may depend on what you find at a reasonable price, so may end up beige or grey, but you can add a blue throw over it for color. Don't repaint the furniture, once you have a rug, there won't be as much dark wood. If you're going to be buying a new office chair anyway, I would select a modern white one. [houzz=]; [houzz=]

Christine, the rug is fine. Not too small. Jack that bed up and pull the rug under far enough so your feet will land on the edge when you get up in the morning. That should leave you a foot or so at the end. It'll be fine.

Amy Burke's choice is the best for rug. You need a large pattern with darker hues.

I think art should be something you love not something to match the curtains. Think about what reflects your personality. You could even get a big poster and have it framed. Many art/poster websites offer a wide variety of ideas.

If those are West Elm's feather gray scribble curtains, no art will clash with them. Well, I suppose something with scribbles might, but you've pretty much got free rein on the art.

I wanted something subtle and organic over your bed. Something that wasn't another rectangle (because your fireplace art could always go here, too). I like Amy's rug but I think my bed would be covering the main part so I think you would only see the wavy lines on the outside (I'd have to get the rug in 8'x11'). I tried to find a similar rug but no luck. Those are West Elm curtains! I'd say the framed beach picture appeals to me the most. What does that mean? :)

Since you like the beach picture that suggests a mood that you want to created in the room. But I do think Grover's idea of getting away from rectangles in the space over the bed is a good idea. You've already got the headboard, windows, etc. I'm attaching a photo of a pretty circular mirror that you might like instead of a framed picture.
