Solar screens vs Tinted windows

We just got new house and wondering should we get the windows tinted or solar screens to protect them against the heat since we live in Vegas and it's bad summer time. But I also want to be able to enjoy the view from outside since we doing a pool.

Solar shades let you enjuoy the view without the UV rays or the heat where I live I like solar shades better than tinting because I can rool them up in the winter to let the sun heat up my space I guess that is not an issue in Vegas so then I would go tinted

Window tint should not be used on Insulated Glass Unit (IGU) windows. Also known as dual pane or triple pane windows, which I'm sure you have in Vegas if it's a new house. Usually voids the warranty and will ruin the seal between the panes. Check with your window manufacturer to be sure.

How can a film put on the inside of a window possibly damage the seal, that does not make sense to me.

"Double pane windows are just that: two panes of glass that are sealed with a space in between, usually filled with a gas. These windows are beneficial for heat insulation, but adding window film to them can alter the solar properties and potentially damage the glass.

All films absorb a certain percentage of heat. If this added heat absorption gets trapped in between the two panes of glass, it can cause the seal to break, or even worse, the glass to shatter." Copied from a window tint manufacturer. I also asked my window supplier in AZ why they don't tint windows there, considering how much the sun is a factor. He told me the same thing. YMMV, but I would certainly check if it voids the warranty.

Thank you flur4fun. I have been told we have warranty on the windows unless we tint them. But never got response why. I wanted so much the tint with the mirror effect for our pattio windows since we are building a pool, but we having such a small patio so wanted the mirror effect of the tint to make the patio/pool space look bigger. Also we want to be able to enjoy the view the pool/patio from the living room, but if we put solar screens this will partly lose the clarity of the view. Any advice what we should do?

I realize this question is a bit old but I have to address the comments made concerning warranty and IG windows. Most window manufacturers will void the warranty if you make any alteration to the window unit. Quality window films that are installed professionally will come with a warranty that replaces the warranty from the window manufacturer so you do not give up anything. If you have an older home with no warranty on your windows you will still have no warranty.

Millions of windows have film installed every year with no issues. If an inexperienced installer chooses the wrong film you can have thermal breakage issues but accelerated seal failure due to window film installation is a myth and independent testing has shown no difference in seal failure rates with film vs. no film.

Here is an interior shot of a more reflective film that would be safe to install on your windows and give you the look you desire.

This is a very old post but I'd love to know what you chose and your thoughts on it. I live in Vegas as well and need to do something with these windows as there is so much heat being let in.

I hope you see this and get back to me.
