One pendant isn't right for the middle of the kitchen. Two or three over the island/peninsula, yes. Over the kitchen floor area either use recessed, track or flush mounted fixtures. If you have a high, vaulted ceiling you could get away with a chandelier or multi head pendant, but then island pendants wouldn't look right. Post more pictures and you'll get lots of ideas.
