Patio Door curtain height - help

We used to have a vertical blind inside mounted. That came down months ago and we had nothing for some time now. I wanted a curtain instead. Several friends advised going with the rod higher above the trim.

we have 9' ceilings. Patio door is appx 7'. I got the 95" curtains and mounted the rod about 1' down from the ceiling. I think it looks good closed, but when open I think the rod looks odd at that height! Is it because I'm not used to it? Or DOES it look odd? I can still lower the rod and and exchange for the shorter curtains.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I would lower it. Make it about 8-12" above the door. If you ever add crown molding you will be happy that you have it lower. Also add some more detail and thickness to your curtains. It will help make the room feel warm and inviting! Good luck!

The rod would look better just below the ceiling or 3" above the window trim.

That IS a dilemma. They do look good closed, and a little awkward open... I typically will split the difference in the distance from the top of the trim to the ceiling. Another treatment I recommend is doing a valance over the top of the opening. The fabric comes down to just cover the trim and top of the window. If you need the privacy, you can add a one way draw panel or a center split draw.

Not wanting to do do custom or hem curtains I needed to do the 95" or 84"..... this is the 95". It is about 15.5" above the trim. If I exchange for the 84" curtains the rod would sit about 3" above the trim instead.
Since the kitchen cabinets to the left are at that height, it was suggested to stay at that height.
Can I add something between the trim and rod ... like a wall verse? right above the trim? Or centered?

I know that this is 8 years ago, but I'm curious what the homeowner chose to do. We have the same issue is the sitting area of our master bedroom with vaulted ceilings. I noted in House & Garden from the UK, artwork was hung in the area between the rod and top of the window in one of their homes and I liked the look.
