Color Selection for accent wall

My 4 year old daughter has asked for a "rainbow" room, and I'd love to do an accent wall with large horizontal stripes of rainbow colors. The other three walls would remain one - more neutral color. I don't want pastel but I don't want bold either.

I'm stuck with selecting the colors - would need about 6 different ones for the stripes and the coordinating wall color for the rest of the room. How do I start? Any suggestions on color palettes?

There are a ton of accessories and decals with rainbows on them for children (think Rainbow Bright, Care Bears, My Little Pony). I'd go with a sky blue as a backdrop for the rainbow since they're usually seen in the sky. A rainbow striped rug (I used to have one my father said looked like a rainbow threw up!) is another good option, and tie dye accessories are great for this theme too.

I like Tara's ideas the best - then use your "neutral" wall color for the negative space in the stripes and the whole room will tie together better.

A suggestion for choosing your rainbow colors - when colors look muddy or grayish they area always easier on the eyes, perhaps that's an idea for avoiding the bright rainbow look, but not going pastel either.

Those tones above are really nice and not too glaring either - the soft greens and blues help a lot!

Tara, the first link is exactly what i had in mind! I just don't know where to start when I walk into a paint store.

I like the white between the horizontal lines but in general don't like white walls. I really don't want to paint the other three walls a true white. What would be a good alternative to white for the other walls?
