Would you be willing to buy new cabinet doors? If so you could also select a different colour to look more modern. If you don't want to get new doors, I would suggest painting them white so they blend in more and putting new handles on. Maybe something small and round as any that are straight will contrast with the wave in the doors and accentuate it. See examples of handles in these photos.

If you're in what is basically a rental and can't paint or change the doors, maybe use contact paper to disguise the "wave" portion of the doors? There are wood grain papers that will match (or at least be close enough from a distance) the doors so that they're not so obviously wavy. If you hate the hardware, you can also swap out the existing for something a little more traditional - just be sure to save the original pulls for when you move out. And honestly, I don't think they're the craziest thing ever. They're faced in a neutral wood grain in a tan/beige kitchen. Once you have all your own stuff in there, it will hopefully seem less weird.

Think I'd be more worried about how the countertops overlap the stove.

If painting is not an option then my suggestion is to leave them alone. Anything else is just going to become a headache. Besides, It looks like there are more important things to worry about like the wiring and the fact that your countertops may be in flames way.

It's hard to see... brightening up the backsplash and the walls would be the cheapest....

thanks all for the suggestions. yeah, this kitchen clearly needs an overhaul. I'm hoping for safety's sake we can get the wiring fixed and do something about that oven but I doubt they'll change the cabinets. to answer the question about where on the world this is... Tbilisi, Georgia!

Is that wires on the doors too?

We thought there were wires on the doors too! But we too are more concerned with the wiring behind the stove. Granted the wavy door shapes are not standard issue, but what the heck, go with it. Clear out all the clutter, call the electrician and have the wiring checked with the permission of the owner of course and then just enjoy your quirky kitchen. With some mid 20th century touches, this could be a very fun kitchen. Just think QUIRKY and go with it AND remember, LESS IS MORE!!!!

There has to be safety codes in Georgia, there is no way that kitchen is up to code if that is wiring all over it and the stove is too short for that placement and being gas is even scarier!

You should be able to raise the range. I had the same problem with mine being too low between the cabinets and had my cabinetmakers build a rolling base so that the burners are above the countertops.

Wow, what an adventure you have ahead of you. I am not sure there are safety codes in Georgia that are up to US standards, but surely you can find a good electrician to fix things up. Maybe the company you work for has some ideas. I am sure they don't want to have a worker lose everything in a house fire. I agree that the cabs are totally funky and fun, so just go with it. Look at the local art and fabrics and incorporate them into your decor.
