We built this home on a steep hillside in the East Bay hills for a couple starting a family. We kept the details simple, and stayed with modest budget – and concentrated on high efficiency and environmentally friendly materials.

The team of architect, builder and clients worked closely to select well-sourced and good quality products: high-volume flyash concrete, blown-in cellulose insulation, FSC certified California madrone wood flooring, salvaged lumber, Richlite recycled paper countertops, low VOC paints and natural oil-based finishes.

The end result – a comfortable and inexpensive house – and one that works architecturally and practically too. Light and airy, well insulated and solidly built – what more could you want?
