I like Dorian Grey the best. The best advice I ever received on paint colors was to use Restoration Hardware paint wheel ($12) to choose. The choices are very limited and they all look fabulous. Paint stores can copy colors if you don't want to buy from them.

Instead of a gray use a taupe that would work better. Changing out trim to white should be the easy part. Why don't you want too update your look? White is a lot cleaner fresher look. Then any gray would work. The money you are spending on samples could had been used to buy a gallon of white.

@ Nancy Travisinteriors: it's not that I don't "want" to. I would love to. But this is only one room and quite frankly it's not feasible right now as my husband has to be out of town for about 2 week stints at a time for work . This will be our babies room that is due in December and even though we are both successful people, we want to keep costs down and focus on what really needs to be done: paint color.

So, maybe in the future to change out trim. But not now. Hence why I'm looking for coordinating colors.

Yup I had been grabbing the little swatch colors things but those are not to color when actually painted, I think most people recommend getting the sample itself so you can apply in the space with a couple coats to tell how it looks with various lightings. Anyway that is how I have had success picking colors in the past.

It's just this darn grey/greige/taupe that is giving me fits!!
Those are usually fairly small and hard to get a good idea IMO.

could you just start with just the trim in this one room maybe? and then change other rooms as you have time and $? The trim does make it very hard to choose a shade of grey… Or I think a green/grey would work!

Yeesh. I'm not interested in painting trim people. I have said that numerous times and also that I'm not looking for a blue grey or green grey..... Not sure why that's so hard to get?
It's fine if people aren't able to suggest anything, but does no one read the actual post itself anymore?

Its just hard to imagine grey when your pairing it against the cream - thats all. but if you don't care at all about the trim colour thats okay. Just trying to help.

wait… you did say you were looking for a grey that would work with that trim. So don't get all "yeesh" at people making suggestions about green or blue greys!

Hi, the thing about paint suggestions is this: I would have suggested Light French Gray as a "true" gray because it is...in my light and in my surroundings. I noted that Glidden recommends Shaded Ice as a complement to Tawny. It is a pretty, very pale...green.

I wondered about Benjamin Moore Shoreline Gray or Coventry Gray. I tried to find photos showing thse colors that also had some yellowy-er tones in them. Coventry is the bedroom photo.






I agree with M Audrey Dawn that Stonington might be worth a look.

I am curious, where did you find the info that have the complimentary colors for the Tawny Birch? I would love to be able to find info like that so I could narrow down and eliminate to make this process easier.

Most paint companies have that feature on their websites. It can be kind of a challenge to track it down. Let's see, went to Glidden website, poked around their palette section for a bit, but then entered Tawny Birch in the search box. I got a page with two suggested color palettes. If you go to the store, the little paint brochures often show coordinating colors as well. And if I'm feeling reckless, I just google "colors that go with..."! :)

Glidden Silver Birch (first image below) is my #1 recommendation for you. You could also try Glidden White Sage (second image). There is no such thing as "true" grey, unless you take black and start cutting it with white (for greyscale shades). All other greys will have some color undertone--and with the warmth of your trim color, you want to make sure that a grey color has the warmth in the undertone…but not TOO much! Not too pink, and not too blue; not too yellow and not too green! Silver Birch. Of course, everything can change based on the color and amount of the light in the room--northern light is different than southern; eastern light is different than western. #notaseasyasitseems :-) Good thing paint is cheap, haha! Good luck and show us the finished space!

I just painted my bathroom SW Jogging Path and I have SW Believable Buff trim throughout my house. The SW Neutral Nuance collection has some wonderful warm neutral grays that work well with cream trim.

I'm having a similar problem. The trim in my entire house is November Rain. It looks like an off white cream color but come to find out it has a green undertone. It has been turning all the pretty grey wall colors I've tested purple or baby blue (repose, revere pewter, silverplate, custom color, stonington, etc.). Our trim has this ultra custom high gloss paint that has to be sanded a bunch if were to redo it and so its like an extra $3k and a week of work from our painter (1300 sq/ft house). I feel like the trim is just not bad enough to repaint, esp for $3k. Its a very old house, so every job is a bit more involved. I really want to find a grey that does not completely change on my wall, but have been unlucky. I had someone recommend to me on this forum Brushed Aluminum. Its for sure got some green undertone, but I just can't seem to find something. Anyways, I feel your pain and look forward to seeing your pics once you pick something. Also my cabinets will be white dove, so I'm already envisioning a disaster between the two whites. Good luck.

Trim and warmer neutral
Tones throughout my home. Our kitchen remodel has been ok until I tried to pick a paint color! Agreeable gray looks powder blue nest to my trim. Looking for the best beige/ gray color to compliment my trim and hickory cabinetry. I do like some contrast between trim and paint color while others seem to like them more “matchy “. Thanks for any suggestions anyone has!

Agreeable Grey from SW works with off-white/cream trim. :)
