I would definitely NOT paint the cabinets. I would go into the home improvement or ranch supply store (depending on where you live) and pick up some TSP - trisodium phosphate - and use it to thoroughly clean the cabinets. Your kitchen has awesome charm, something you just don't get with modern kitchens and real wood cherry cabinets cost a fortune. Why cover them up with paint and reduce their value?

Adding a new countertop and some stainless appliances will go a long way to modernizing the kitchen. If you go with a farmhouse sink, find a local woodworker to customize the cabinet under the sink and reduce the door height. You'll be glad you did.

Sure... while you have a woodworker out, why don't you think about a custom butcher block. That would look very cool with predominantly lighter color wood to offset the dark cherry.

I agree completely with Action Specialty Contracting. to help make your kitchen airier even with keeping the cherry is to clear off all the stuff on your walls and counters and shelves and only leave the clear white and a few of the green glass things.
