I think you have done a wonderful job! Personally, I would pull the darker grey from the area rug up and onto the walls! I think that will add the depth you are craving for your space!

Do you need the floor lamp in the corner? It seems out of place and a bit lonely. Try it between the two chairs or just remove it completely to see if just tweaking that gets you going again. I'm also thinking everything needs a few more inches of breathing room. Just spread it out a little more. Finally, I'm really big on angles so my preference would be to angle the two side chairs for a more comfortable conversation area. Hope this helps.

Oh, one more thing, I was looking at the pics on the left of the fireplace. Have you considered using orange mats the color of your shelving to bring your orange over that side? I wouldn't paint either. You've got the pieces it's just a matter of details.

Here are two pics from the wall op. the fireplace. The bookcase is going to be painted and moved to a bedroom. I have two chairs (pic with gold Greece key fabric) that are going to be reupholstered to sit in the corner where the bookcase resides now.

Is the a rug issue? Coffee table, solution? It seems like everything has hard edges. Is that the issue?

I agree with ann0605 a curtain valance over the window will help a lot. The room is nicely done but a little bottom heavy with the taller ceilings. If you can afford it how about a ceiling fan to bring something up high and fill the void.

With the chairs so close to the coffee table, do you actually need the small table between the chairs? Is its function necessary? If not, you could move it and use the coffee table for drinks, etc.

The ceiling are skylights, that then open up to our outside deck on the second floor.

With those you don't need such a strong orange accent

Ermmm, I think I'm going to respectfully disagree re: chandelier/fan. Form, in my opinion, should follow function and I'm not sure I understand the function for either. As for a valance over the windows, again, function? This room seems to give a transitional/modern (though not MCM) vibe that begs clean lines and not so much fussiness. Covering that window, I think, would really negate much of that feeling. I love the light it adds to the room as well as the architectural interest.

Ohhh....noooo...love that orange! I think you just need more of it. Not much more but one more area to complete the flow. The orange is what lifts the room from the cookie cutter to the personal, from anyone's to your own personality. Think in triangles for color just as triangles in the kitchen. One more pop of orange and your triangle will be completed.

Your style seems to be contemporary and eclectic. The mantel seems more traditional, and the mirror makes it seem even more so. I like the idea of the artwork instead, and you can bring in more of your colors. I don't mind the orange, but the scale of that shelf seems off, just a bit too large for that spot. I also like the idea of changing out the blinds. Maybe solar shades in a grey color, as well as some fabric panels to frame them and add texture and color. One more thought, after looking at your pictures again - maybe move the larger platter that is on the console table onto the shelves, and a couple of the smaller items on the shelves out onto the console table.

1. Angle the two chairs slightly towards each other (not closer)

2. I'd move the tray flat

3. Nothing on mantle piece I think the mirror is enough

4. I think there are too many nik naks for my liking, to make it look more staged but still comfy I'd plump the sofa (sit on) cushions, replace one of the display sofa cushions and use a plain purple to tie in with the chairs

5. When taking the next pic if you take on any ideas, open the blinds, photograph at sunset, don't leave lights on unless it feels dark in the room

6. I believe there is too much in the room, or the furniture needs to be moved further out in the room if poss. Difficult to tell in photos

There's too much crowded around the fireplace. I like the color of the orange shelf but it's not much of a statement aside from the color. Very sparsley decorated and nothing pops. Would it fit on another wall? It's definitely top heavy with that plant on the highest shelf.

Pull all the furniture, rug included, away from the firplace by about a foot. That should still give you enough room to walk over to the stairs.

you need things with both purple and orange in them - art or pillows perhaps.

I think this space has tons of potential to be very chic but is in need of some editing. I agree with Leelee that the fireplace is overstuffed. That orange shelfing unit really detracts from the space and looks flimsy. Ditto for the overcrowded little table on the other side of the fireplace. I would begin by eliminating any questionable items and judge how the room looks after every subtraction. (The whole addition by subtraction rule makes lots of sense,)

As suggested by What's Inside, I agree that painting a darker grey like that in the rug would give a much richer, more substantial look. And the art suggested by Leelee would be terrific.

Keep your orange it is memorable - I couldn't remember anything else about the place. Keep your knick knacks - it is your HOME not a magazine cover. I do love the idea of a brightly coloured painting though (bringing out the orange) maybe the problem with the gorgeous shelf is that it is a statement piece that you have placed to one side.

I chop furniture so if it were up to me I would cop your shelf in half so that it is half the height and put the two pieces beside the fireplace to create symmetry. But, being daring with furniture (chopping it up) isn't for everyone. If there are joints between them it should be easily reassembled if you don't like it. That way, you could put the mirror to the wall where the orange shelf currently is. Do you know what I mean?

If it was me, I would remove the orange bookshelf, and I would replace the blinds with curtains. I would also remove the tray from the table behind the couch.

I would reverse the position of the couch and the chairs...make the space feel more open with a 'open sit and chat' feel instead of a visual barrier of a couch back (think Feng Shui). As well, you need some sort of long narrow drape that mounted on mini-rods at each side of the large window. A color like you purples or orangey tones (or a combination of both) sitting behind your neutral couch would help connect the newly arranged furniture (chairs away from the window). You also could then change the blinds to a more contemporary tight woven solar screen shade in a neutral tone; right now the wood tone is too dominant and doesn't quite fit with the rest of your color scheme.
