The formal velvet chairs and heavily carved gold mirror are in contradiction to the casual leather sofa. Either go casual den or formal sitting style here, but not both. Mirrors should reflect something you want to see twice - a view, a gorgeous chandelier, a piece of art. Your silk drapes, chairs and mirrors might be more comfortable in the master bedroom.

ok thanks. We use our family room all of the time, and we will hardly use this room so I really didn't want to buy a new sofa :/. I love the chairs and the mirror was my grandmother's so I was hoping they would all work. But understand your points. Thanks!

Consider something like this. Pick up a similarly scaled pair of armless slipper chairs in a patterned fabric that works with your velvet chairs. Group all four of them around a low coffee table in front of the FP. Maybe the mirror could go on a wall opposite the FP to reflect the chairs, FP and perhaps a gorgeous chandelier.

I like your room and your individual pieces. I would do draperies on all windows…perhaps picking up the tone on your trim. I would do one panel on the windows flanking the fireplace and a pair on the larger window. I would look at your art and trim color for inspiration for pillows and a rug. Lighter is better…the light color will keep the room looking fresh. I also think having the sofa should have a console table behind it and be centered on the window. Good Luck!

It's a great idea to do shades on the windows by the fireplace and curtains on the rest. Use matching or coordinating fabrics.

deco's point about the sofa is well taken, but I think you might get away with it if it's the only casual piece in the room. (Would be better if it weren't leather, but oh well...) You can camouflage it a bit with pillows and a throw.

I think the art is not well-suited for this space either. For one thing, it's too large. Something classic in a frame would work better in this room.

I'd look for a traditional rug in light tones to help brighten the space.

I agree groveraxle---I wish the sofa wasn't leather! I am torn between 3 drapes or roman shades and drapes. I like the idea of 1 panel on the smaller windows. Thanks so much everyone. Thanks everyone! Yes, I like the romans and the panel idea. But I'd rather not take down our wooden blinds and buy 2 new window treatments. I'd like to put that money towards a new sofa or 2 chairs :) I appreciate the visual, groveraxle. That's definitely a bigger rug than I was thought we needed but it looks nice. The chairs and sofa are a little off center in our room so I was having trouble picturing how it will all look....so this definitely helps. thanks guys!

What do you guys think about these chairs to go along with the other 2 grey ones. I would alternate all 4 of them in a circle like how decoenthusiast recommended. We would move the leather sofa into a different room. Sorry I don't know how to paste the picture of the chair. But here's the link:

Can't tell if it's too much velvet or if that 's what it needs. Great price, but don't want to jump the gun. I'm thinking I would get some roll pillows to bring it together. A rug, window treatments, etc. I've decided to move the painting to our dining room. Not sure? I'm not good at visualizing :/

thanks grover! So cool how you can do that with the pictures. I would definitely plan to alternate them in a pattern in a circle with a coffee table in the middle. I like the grey rug more than the yellow. Our of those chairs, the Crenshaw is my favorite--but I'm not liking the wood finish because it's so different from our current chairs.
