I'd paint. do the island a different colour. Maybe different top and bottom colours

I agree with the decorator, and with the black counters I think white or an ivory/off white would look sophisticated or else a nice light grey. You could do white all round with a soft grey on the island, or do light grey all round with maybe the island blue if you like a country look (not my favorite, but an option) or another color you like.

In my non-expert opinion, I agree with Darzy. I think your cabinets are beautiful. I've seen other folks on this site just change their paint colors, hardware, and backsplash to maybe tone down any honey color?

Your cabinets do not look like the "typical" honey oak dated cabinets. If they did I'd say, paint, paint, paint! Painted cabinets (unless professionally done) need repainted too soon.

You know, I bet if you did an impromptu search out here just for wood cabinets, half the ones that would pop up would look something like yours in terms of the shade of wood, but they would be considered state of the art kitchens-cabinets and all.
I, too, think your cabinets are very nice. You even have a paneled refrigerator, if I'm not mistaken-and that certainly isn't something that has even become the norm for the everyday kitchen-so the wood certainly shouldn't be out of style.
Perhaps you are just feeling the need to put your own stamp on the kitchen. Painting would be a really drastic step, so maybe it would be better to just change other things in the space first, like others have suggested. It really is amazing how just a different shade of paint can change the look of a room.

Thanks for all of your advice! I don't love the cabinets, but I'm having second thoughts about painting them right away. I am planning on removing the pot rack. Maybe I will paint the walls, and think about the cabinets a little while. .. Thanks again!

I think you should live with them for awhile. Painting cabinets rarely turns out well. Paint the walls and paint the wainscoting on the island a creamy white. Get rid of the bar stools. They are vey country and get more updated stools. I think with those small changes you will love the kitchen cabinets.

Also get rid of pot rack and hang three, non-country pendant lights over the island.

Yeah, pendant lights over the island would be nice. Replacing the existing pot rack with a semi-circular wall-mounted one over the kitchen sink works very well too. I loved mine. It is also very practical to have the pot rack over the sink since you can wash the dishes and hang them. If they drip over the sink, that wouldn't be a problem.

I actually think you should change the color of the cabinets.

I would stain them all the same color. I don't like how the island is a darker color than the rest of the cabinets. The wainscoting on the bar also appears a lighter color than the rest of the cabinets, but that might just be the photo. If you paint the cabinets white I would leave the island wood color.

I liked your kitchen, but your kitchen will look more beautiful with the white color cabinets. Go for it.

Thank you all for your advice. I think I'm going to wait until we are actually in the house to make a big decision on the kitchen. The pot rack will come down for sure. And there are so many shades of white (if I do paint), I just want to make sure it's what we want. As nice as it would be to have it painted and done when we move in, I think waiting will be fine too! Thanks again!
