Either way. If I am finishing a room for the first time I paint the trim off the walls. Then I install the trim. Then I sink the nails with a nail punch and spackle the holes, and touch up with the same paint.

If I am painting a room for the second time, I don't remove all the trim. I paint it on the wall.

Jn3344 is right. You will save yourself a headache if you paint them before you install. All you will have to do is touch up work and you will save your self the hassle of taping around all of the trim to paint.

Thanks We just bought a new, to us, house but it is stuck firmly in the late '60's/early 70's so carpets, wallpaper (every room!) is going and new baseboard/crown moulding being installed. We did buy a nailer so we can use the little nails just was't sure if we should paint first. Makes sense. Thanks everyone. I think this house may be a five year project so no doubt I will have more questions. Luckily DH is quite handy so we can do a lot of the work ourselves. And so far we are having fun!

I know this post is old but it’s very helpful in answering my current question as well. I am planning to pint and install picture frame moulding to my guest room. My questions is so I paint the walls/baseboard/crown, and then install the moulding? Or should I install the moulding and then paint the walls and moulding all at once?
