I see a thin mirrored console to make the space pop. Then place some cool accessories on it and I feel that the space would benefit from a much larger rug.

Pic needs to go. Two tike colors cut space up. One are rug would unify. Painting stone to match wall color would unify as well (if u don't like the stone that is.) Ditto on sectional: pull out if the corner.

Looks to me like it's missing an end table or console table. Also, you might try moving the sofa a bit further from the stone wall. I like your color pops, though! :)

Try floating this arrangement, and using casegoods, and much larger artwork against the walls instead. The faux treatments are all problematic, and might go away. Your tile floors are active enough, so look at solid options for area rugs - shag would be a good softening agent here.

To help fill and balance the room: Move your couch away from the brick and center under window. Add a table and lamp in that corner and a floor lamp that reaches out a bit on the other end. Place bean bags so they are facing each other and add a large square coffee table and area rug. At glass/railing at the oppostite side of room to couch, you could have long console table with a lamp. Added ideas: I would paint chair rail the same color as your wall. On window ledge, add some interesting items in wood. I would move your art to the wall at the top of the stairs and add a series of small pictures above couch. [houzz=]

@Kathy Williamson - I am not tied to the picture. My boyfriend put it there and I didn't love it. When you say the bean bags could be used to transition from the sectional to the window, could you please tell me where specifically you would put them? And do you think that having the sectional close off the dining room wouldn't look odd? I keep getting really drawn to your idea. Thank you!!

Actually, I went through and moved everything, and it didn't look so good. :( The couch had a hole in the back and everything felt super-off. I ended up moving it right back to where it was.

We have another black couch (a random mishmash of furniture, really) that was in the kitchen. I moved it to the corner and am thinking of getting a coffee table that has black and brown on it.

I'm attaching the pictures of the space now (and am still open to moving that picture).

Ugh - really, I should just buy all new furniture, eh? It's just that this isn't our main house and we don't want to put too much into it. But we may be getting renters at some point, so we can't have total crap either... mama mia :)

I think the additional sofa is a boon, and if you have a few more chairs, you can have 2 seating areas joined by the giant bean bag, in between. You'll want a coffee table for each sofa, large enough for everyone to reach it. If, though, you try to put any 2 of the long seats together ( as you showed early on) a much larger coffee table than the Overstock will be needed.
Casegoods are hard material pieces, typically for storage.

Rachel, I don't think you're that far off from achieving a cohesive look. For me the one thing that really stands out are the bean bag chair/sofa things - they're so large and unstructured that I think they make the space look a little sloppy...even though it isn't. I think a more structured or tailored piece - like the black sofa you introduced - would make a world of difference.

The bean bag chairs might be super comfortable, but they don't lend any visual aesthetic, in my opinion. Some things just don't photograph well, though, so perhaps they're not as much of an eyesore in person. (Can you fluff them or anything?) The rug and the art are lovely, though. :)

I would put the couch back to where it was originally along the wall, with the bean bags facing each other and a large square coffee table in the middle of these pieces. Add small pictures in a row above the couch below the window for interest. The couch placed by stair feels lost.

how about switching the bean bags with your sectional? that way, you have the stone wall and the bean bags as kind of a "contrast" - am not sure how that would look, but that way, you create a aera, with the sectional and get a coffee table in the middle, but am not sure if it will work with the bean bags, they seem a bit too big ...

Rachel, i am thinking of 2 design principles that I read about a lot: the focal point and the conversation area.

After seeing the results of your second try, what if you put the big couch under the window ? It seems like the right proportion.
