The most important rule in interior design is to choose your paint colors last. So, you're off to a good start. I'm at the beach and away from my paint samples, but here's a bit of advice I hope will help.

Take a sample of the carpet and a cushion cover from your sofa to your local Benjamin Moore store. You might call ahead first to see if you can schedule a consultation. Some BM shops carry large paint swatches which you can purchase, or use in the store for free. They have lots of neutrals for you to choose from. And, there always seems to be someone willing to help you out. Like me!

If your colors downstairs are on the brown side, go with a warm beige. If they're a bit grey, go with a warm or cool grey. Just make it a lighter color than the sofa. Always always test first. It's worth the little bit of extra time and cost. The light will reflect the paint differently in your basement.

You don't have to match the upstairs with the down via paint. Carry color into other rooms with accessories. But, you might think of using an accent color on the fireplace wall. You could tie in grey and tan that way. If they work well together on clothes, they'll work in a room just as well.
